About this mission

Companies like Gap 360 charge £579+ for a "working holiday kickstart" package — really just a week of hostel stays and group activities designed to ease the anxiety of landing in a new country alone. The truth is hostels in Sydney are full of people in exactly the same boat, and you'll make friends within days regardless. This Mission does the same thing at cost price: a crew of people landing in Sydney around the same time, splitting the same hostel, doing the same activities — minus the markup, plus the reassurance of already having a group lined up before you land. Pick a rough window you're planning to arrive, and we'll match you with others arriving around the same time. Once enough people are in, agree a date together and go.

Rough plan

Suggested first week (optional, adapt as a group): arrive Sydney, settle into the hostel; guided self-walk of the CBD and Darling Harbour; Sydney Harbour cruise (book direct, GetYourGuide or similar); head up to Port Stephens for a couple of nights — 4WD dunes tour, sandboarding, dolphin cruise; back to Sydney for a TFN/bank account/Medicare admin session and CV review (all free via government services); Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. After week one, everyone's sorted their own job search and accommodation, ideally sharing a place with people from the group.

Accommodation plans

Most people start in a hostel dorm for the first week or two while job-hunting and finding a share house. Wake Up! Hostel in central Sydney is a popular, well-located option (mixed dorms, sociable, opposite Central Station) — book direct rather than through a package. After that, most of the group moves into shared rentals together once they've found work.
