Vietnam Real Tour charges £679

£209saved per person (31%)

No-markup version: ~£470 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A 10-day independent run of the classic north-to-south Vietnam route — Hanoi's Old Quarter, an overnight boat or budget cruise in Halong Bay, the Reunification Express down to Da Nang, the Hai Van Pass, lantern-lit Hoi An, the Cham ruins of My Son, and a Mekong Delta day boat trip from Ho Chi Minh City. Everything the tour operator bundles (hotels, cruise, trains, drivers, guided day trips) is swapped for hostel/guesthouse stays, publicly bookable sleeper trains and buses, and GetYourGuide/Klook bookable day tours. Costs are backpacker-to-flashpacker estimates in GBP per person, excluding international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Hanoi — Old Quarter orientation

Hanoi

Fly into Noi Bai (HAN). Skip the operator's private airport pickup and take the Vietnam Airlines/Vietjet express bus #86 from the terminal to the Old Quarter (~35,000 VND / £1.20, ~45-60 min) or a Grab car for around £7-8. Check into a hostel or budget hotel near Hoan Kiem Lake, then do your own walking loop: Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple, the 'Train Street' viewpoint (café entry ~50,000 VND), Dong Xuan Market, and the 36 guild streets. Evening street-food crawl — bun cha, banh mi, egg coffee — for under £5. Book your Halong Bay trip tonight for tomorrow.

Book a 2D1N Halong or Lan Ha Bay cruise independently through Klook, GetYourGuide or your hostel desk — a good 3-star junk with pickup, meals, kayaking and a cabin runs £75-110 pp (Lan Ha Bay is quieter and cheaper than Halong proper). Coach pickup from the Old Quarter around 8am, ~3.5 hours to the harbour. Afternoon: sail among the limestone karsts, kayak through the lagoons, climb the steps on Titop Island for the sunset panorama, and swim off the beach. Dinner on board and squid fishing if you fancy it.

Kayak once more or take an optional bamboo boat ride, do the spring-roll cooking demo, brunch on board, then the shuttle back to Hanoi for a late-afternoon arrival. Evening: £1.50 bia hoi on Ta Hien corner and a walk around the night market if it's a weekend.

Afterwards collect a banh mi for the train. Take a Grab to Hanoi railway station and board the SE3/SE1 Reunification Express sleeper to Da Nang — soft-sleeper 4-berth from about £30-40 pp when booked on the official Vietnam Railways site (dsvn.vn) or 12go.asia. Lock your bag to the bunk and bring earplugs.

Day 5

Hai Van Pass by train, then Hoi An Old Town

Da Nang to Hoi An

You'll wake up on the coastal approach into Da Nang — arguably the best scenery on the whole line. If you want the classic Hai Van Pass views, take a local Da Nang–Hue train seat (about £2-3, 2.5 hrs) or hire a scooter/join a Jeep tour over the pass; otherwise head straight on. To Hoi An: local bus #1 from Da Nang centre takes around 45-60 minutes for about £1, or a Grab is roughly £8. Check into a guesthouse or hostel with free bicycles (many in Hoi An do). Late afternoon wander the Old Town — Japanese Covered Bridge, the assembly halls, the yellow shophouses — and buy the 120,000 VND Old Town ticket. Sunset drinks on the Thu Bon riverfront.

🚌Da Nang–Hoi An local bus #1 ~£1 (or Grab ~£8); local train portion ~£2-3

🛏Hoi An guesthouse or hostel, often with free bicycle hire (£10-18)

Alternatively hire a scooter (~£5/day) or join a minibus from town for ~£4 each way and pay the 150,000 VND site entry. The 4th-13th century Cham tower complex is at its best before 9am, before the heat and crowds. On the way back, take the Thu Bon river boat option or cycle the lanes past rice paddies and villages. Back in Hoi An by early afternoon — pool time or a £10 cooking class at one of the many family-run kitchens.

🚌Group tour minibus included in tour price, or scooter hire ~£5

A proper slow day. Cycle to An Bang or Cua Dai beach (free bike, ~20 min), get something made at one of the many tailors (allow £30-60 for a dress or shirt, 24-hr turnaround), or book a farming-and-fishing trip (~£12-18 pp) where you ride a basket boat through the coconut palms. Riverside dinner with cao lau and white rose dumplings, then release a paper lantern on the river for about £1.

Cheaper but slower: an open-bus sleeper coach booked on 12go.asia is ~£14-18 and takes 18-20 hours, or the Reunification Express (~£20-28 soft seat, 16-19 hrs). Land in District 1, check into a hostel around Pham Ngu Lao or Bui Vien, and spend the evening eating banh xeo and drinking rooftop beer for £6.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched: Essence of Vietnam — Hanoi to the Mekong in 10 Days cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £470 per person for 10 days in Vietnam. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Vietnam Real Tour?+

Yes — Vietnam Real Tour charges around £679 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £470 — a saving of roughly £209 (31%) per person.

How long is the Vietnam trip?+

This itinerary runs 10 days, covering 10 day-by-day stops through Vietnam.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, budget, backpacker trip through Vietnam, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
