Tunisie Voyages charges £965

£550saved per person (57%)

No-markup version: ~£415 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched 5-day loop from Tunis covering the same highlights as Tunisie Voyages' small-group "Nature and Culture" tour — the Bardo Museum, Carthage, Utica, Bizerte, the pottery village of Sejnene, Tabarka's fortress and needle rocks, Ain Draham's hot springs, and the Roman cities of Bulla Regia, Dougga and Oudhna — but done independently using louages (shared minibuses), trains, local guides and small guesthouses. Total cost is roughly a third of the operator price, and you'll actually eat and sleep among locals rather than in isolated package hotels. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget estimates in GBP per person, excluding international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Tunis & Bardo Museum

Tunis

Fly into Tunis–Carthage. Skip the airport taxi touts and take the cheap TGM/SNCFT light rail or bus into the city centre (Tunis Marine station, about 1 TND), then check into a medina guesthouse or the backpacker-friendly Hotel Transatlantique near Avenue Habib Bourguiba. In the afternoon walk or take bus 3 to the Bardo National Museum — the finest mosaic collection in the world. Get there by 14:00 to have two hours before closing. In the evening eat brik and couscous at a locals' restaurant in the medina (Dar El Jeld's cheaper neighbours) or on Rue Sidi Bou Mendil. Book your medina guides for later in the trip tonight from your guesthouse.

🚌TGM/SNCFT train or bus from airport ~£1; city buses ~£0.30/ride

🛏Medina guesthouse or budget hotel in central Tunis, £22-30/night

  • →Bardo National Museum (entry ~£7)
  • →Medina of Tunis evening wander
  • →Avenue Habib Bourguiba stroll
~£65
Day 2

Carthage, Utica & Bizerte

Bizerte

Start early with the TGM train from Tunis Marine to Carthage (about £1, 30 min). Cover the Carthage ruins — Antonine Baths, Byrsa Hill and the Punic ports — on the combined ticket (~£3). Then take a louage from Tunis's Bab Saadoun louage station north to Utica (~£2, 45 min) to see the Phoenician/Roman site and mosaics (~£2 entry); options are limited so agree a return or onward hop to Bizerte with a shared taxi (~£3). In Bizerte, walk the old port, the Spanish Kasbah and the canal views. Sleep in a simple Bizerte hotel or guesthouse rather than a resort. Dinner of grilled sea bream at a harbour-side café.

🚌TGM train to Carthage ~£1; louages Tunis–Utica–Bizerte ~£5-6 total

🛏Family-run hotel or guesthouse in Bizerte old town, £25-30/night

  • →Carthage ruins and Antonine Baths (~£3 combined ticket)
  • →Utica archaeological site tour (~£2)
  • →Bizerte old port and Kasbah walk
~£78
Day 3

Sejnene Pottery Village & Tabarka

Tabarka

Take a louage from Bizerte to Sejnene (change at Mateur if needed, ~£2-3, 1.5 hrs). Sejnene is Tunisia's pottery capital — walk the workshops, watch the throwing and buy directly from the potters (~£3-5 for a small piece). Continue by louage to Tabarka (~£2, 45 min). Drop bags, then explore the 16th-century Genoese fortress on the hill (~£2 entry) and walk the needle-shaped rock formations and harbour at sunset. Browse the coral shops (Tabarka coral is famous — be aware coral trade is regulated, buy vintage or ask about provenance). Dinner at a small family restaurant in the town centre, not a resort buffet.

🚌Louages Bizerte–Sejnene–Tabarka ~£5 total

🛏Small Tabarka guesthouse or budget hotel near the harbour, £25-30/night

  • →Sejnene pottery workshops (free, pottery £3-5)
  • →Tabarka Genoese fortress (~£2)
  • →Tabarka needle rocks and harbour walk
  • →Coral shops browsing
~£72
Day 4

Ain Draham, Bulla Regia, Dougga & Oudhna

Tunis

This is the big day — best done by hiring a driver-guide for the day in Tabarka (~£55-70 for the car, splittable with other travellers you've met en route) since the Roman sites are off the louage network. Start at Ain Draham in the Kroumirie cork-oak mountains (Roman baths and hot springs, free). Then head south to Bulla Regia (~£2 entry) to see the extraordinary underground Roman villas, followed by Dougga (~£3), a UNESCO-listed Roman city with its Punic-Libyan mausoleum, Capitol and theatre — allow 2 hours. Finish at Oudhna (Uthina) for the semi-excavated theatre (~£2). Arrive back in Tunis in the evening and check back into your medina guesthouse. If you're going solo, ask your guesthouse to match you with a driver-guide; public transport alternative is a bus to Le Kef/Jendouba plus taxis, but it's slow.

🚌Private driver-guide for the day (~£55-70 per car, splittable) or bus to Jendouba ~£4

🛏Medina guesthouse or budget hotel in central Tunis, £22-30/night

  • →Ain Draham hot springs (free)
  • →Bulla Regia underground villas (~£2)
  • →Dougga UNESCO site (~£3)
  • →Oudhna theatre (~£2)
~£100
Day 5

Carthage Ruins & Departure

Tunis / Carthage

If you haven't yet done Carthage in full, take the TGM train back out (~£1) for the ruins you missed — or do Sidi Bou Said instead for the blue-and-white village and a coffee at Café des Délices. Return to Tunis centre, pick up any last medina souvenirs, then take the TGM/bus to the airport for your flight (allow 90 minutes). If you're extending, Tunis is a great base for a cheap onward louage to Hammamet or Sousse.

🚌TGM train to Carthage/Sidi Bou Said ~£1; TGM/bus to airport ~£1

🛏None (departure day) — or £22-30 if adding an extra night

  • →Carthage ruins or Sidi Bou Said village
  • →Café des Délices coffee stop
  • →Medina souvenir shopping
~£30

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Northern Tunisia: Carthage, Dougga & the Coral Coast cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £415 per person for 5 days in Tunisia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Tunisie Voyages?+

Yes — Tunisie Voyages charges around £965 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £415 — a saving of roughly £550 (57%) per person.

How long is the Tunisia trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Tunisia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, adventure, budget trip through Tunisia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
