This self-launched itinerary mirrors Intrepid Travel's popular Real Thailand (Basix) tour — covering Bangkok, Chiang Mai, a hilltribe trek, Ko Samui, Khao Sok National Park and Phuket — at a fraction of the cost. You'll swap the group leader for local knowledge, booking apps and fellow hostel travellers. Transport is handled via Thailand's excellent overnight train network, public buses and ferries. Activities are self-booked via GetYourGuide, Klook or direct with local operators. All costs are approximate estimates per person based on current budget traveller rates.

Day 1

Arrive in Bangkok — Chinatown & Street Food

Touch down in Bangkok and make your way to your hostel via the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai station (~£1.50), then a short BTS hop or taxi. Bangkok — Temples, Markets & Overnight Train to Chiang Mai

Spend your final Bangkok morning exploring at your own pace. Consider a relaxing Thai massage to start the day, then rent a bike or hop on the Chao Phraya Express Boat (~£0.50) to visit Talad Noi riverside neighbourhood and the key Bangkok temples. In the evening, make your way to Hua Lamphong Station (or Bangkok Krung Thep Aphiwat for newer services) and board the overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai. Book second-class sleeper tickets in advance via the State Railway of Thailand website (seat61.com is a great guide) for around £15–20 per person. The journey takes approximately 13 hours.

Arrive Chiang Mai — Old City Exploration & Night Bazaar

The train arrives in Chiang Mai around 7–8am. Grab a red songthaew (shared pickup truck taxi) to your guesthouse in the Old City area (~£1). Check in, freshen up and take a self-guided orientation walk around the moat-lined Old City. Visit Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh (entrance ~£1 each). In the evening, head to the famous Night Bazaar and Anusarn Market for street food, souvenirs and people-watching. The Nimman area has great cafes and bars for later.

Hilltribe Trek Day 2 — Jungle & Farmland to Pong Ngan Lahu Village

Wake up to jungle bird calls and a homestay breakfast. Today's trek covers around 10km (5 hours) through farmland and jungle, visiting other hilltribe villages along the way. The contrast between villages is fascinating — take your time to chat with locals and photograph the scenery. Lunch is included along the trail. Arrive at Pong Ngan Lahu Village in the afternoon for rest, exploration and another home-cooked dinner. This is a genuine off-the-beaten-track experience that no amount of money can replicate — just requires some advance planning.

The overnight train arrives in Bangkok early morning. Head back to your hostel (same area as before, or try somewhere new — the Khao San Road area is lively and central). Store luggage and get some rest. Bangkok rewards slow exploration — wander through Chatuchak Weekend Market (if visiting Saturday/Sunday), browse the Or Tor Kor fresh market, or simply find a café and recharge with a Thai iced coffee. In the evening, hit the street food stalls around Victory Monument or Ratchadapisek Night Market for cheap, delicious eats.

The train arrives in Surat Thani early morning. From the station, take a shared minibus (~£2) to Don Sak Pier, then board a Seatran or Raja Ferry to Ko Samui (~£8–10, approximately 1.5 hours). Total travel time is around 4 hours. Check into your guesthouse near Chaweng or Lamai Beach. Spend the afternoon beach hopping — rent a scooter (~£7/day) to get around the island independently. Chaweng Beach is lively; Lamai is slightly quieter. Grab fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant for dinner.

Ride your scooter north to visit Wat Phra Yai (the iconic 15m Big Buddha) — entry is free, donations welcome. Continue to the Fisherman's Village in Bophut for brunch at one of the charming cafes. In the afternoon, head inland to Na Muang Waterfall No.1 — a beautiful cascade with a natural swimming pool. Entry is free. Return to Chaweng in time for sunset cocktails and dinner. Ko Samui's nightlife is legendary — Chaweng Beach Road transforms into a buzzing strip after dark.

The most popular option is a day trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park — an archipelago of 42 islands with pristine beaches, jungle trails, sea caves and the stunning Emerald Lake (Thale Nai). Make your way up to the Phuket Big Buddha (~£free, donations welcome) for panoramic island views — grab a songthaew or rent a scooter (~£7). In the afternoon, head to Kata or Karon Beach for a last swim. Watch the sunset from Promthep Cape, one of the finest viewpoints in southern Thailand. Grab a final Thai meal — pad thai, green curry or a whole grilled fish — and toast to an epic 15 days.
