A self-launched version of G Adventures' "Upgraded Southern Thailand" (Trip Code ATSJ): Bangkok → Ko Samui → Khao Sok National Park → Krabi → Bangkok in 8 days. This route swaps the private minivans, included internal flights and group hotels for budget flights, public ferries, songthaews and hostels/guesthouses — while keeping the same headline experiences: longtail-boat island hopping around Ko Mat Sum and Ko Taen, overnight in the Khao Sok rainforest with a night safari, and a longtail ride to Khao Khanap Nam and the community island of Ko Klang. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Bangkok – settle in and explore

Bangkok

Land at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang and take the Airport Rail Link (45 THB, ~£1) or the S1 city bus to your hostel near Khao San / Rambuttri in the old town. Skip the included private transfer and use the meter taxi (ask for meter, ~£7-9) if arriving late. Spend the evening walking Banglamphu, eating street food at Soi Rambuttri and getting an early night before tomorrow's flight. Buy a Thai eSIM (AIS/TrueMove tourist plan, ~£8-10 for 15 days) at the airport or 7-Eleven.

🚌Airport Rail Link £1; meter taxi £7-9

🛏Hostel dorm or private twin near Khao San, £10-14

  • →Airport Rail Link into old town
  • →Evening street food walk, Khao San/Rambuttri

Day 2

Fly Bangkok to Ko Samui – beach afternoon

Ko Samui

Instead of the group transfer and included flight, book a cheap AirAsia/Nok Air flight Bangkok–Surat Thani (often £30-50 one way) and take the Seatran or Raja Ferry from Donsak to Ko Samui (~150-200 THB, 1.5 hrs). Budget option: the overnight sleeper train Bangkok–Surat Thani (~£20-25) plus ferry. Settle into a guesthouse around Lamai or Bophut — cheaper and quieter than Chaweng. Afternoon: swim, hire a scooter (~£6/day, valid licence needed) or just walk the beach village, then dinner at a night market.

Day 3

Longtail boat to Ko Mat Sum & Ko Taen

Ko Samui

Walk the Bang Rak or Thong Krut pier and haggle a longtail boat (or join a shared trip from a local operator — around 1,500-2,000 THB per person, or ~£30-40 private between 3-4 people) out to the tiny islands of Ko Mat Sum and Ko Taen in the Gulf. This is the same excursion G Adventures runs, just booked direct at the pier. Stop for a beach-side lunch of grilled fish and som tam, then kayak or snorkel off the reef. Book through your guesthouse the night before for a good price; bring cash, reef-safe sunscreen and a dry bag.

🚌Longtail boat ~£30 pp; songthaew £2

🛏Guesthouse, Ko Samui, £14-20

  • →Shared longtail boat to Ko Mat Sum & Ko Taen

Day 4

Ferry to mainland, community farm lunch, into Khao Sok rainforest

Khao Sok National Park

Take the morning ferry back to Donsak, then a minivan or bus toward Surat Thani/Ban Ta Khun (~£5-7). Break the journey at a community-run fruit farm around Ban Ta Khun for an orchard walk and a local lunch (local operators such as Khao Sok Eco Trails or your lodge can arrange ~£10-12 — similar to the G for Good moment on the tour). Continue to a community eco-lodge on the edge of Khao Sok National Park (e.g. Art's Riverview Lodge or the Elephant Hills budget alternatives). After dark, join a guided night jungle walk from the lodge (~£8-10) to spot civets, frogs, insects and sleeping birds.

🚌Ferry £5 + minivan £6

🛏Riverside eco-lodge / raft house, £15-22

  • →Donsak–mainland ferry & minivan transfer
  • →Community fruit farm lunch

Day 5

Full day in Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park

A free day to enjoy Asia's oldest evergreen rainforest at your own pace. Options: the marked park trail hike to a waterfall and bat cave (~200 THB park fee, hire a local guide for £12-15); a Sok River canoe trip (~£10-12); a cycle loop through rubber plantations (~£6 bike hire); or the hot springs at Rommanee (~£4 plus local transport). Many travellers also do the half-day trip to Cheow Lan Lake with longtail boat and floating raft lunch (~£30-35) — book direct with a lodge rather than through a tour desk for a better rate.

🚌Local songthaew / scooter £3-5

🛏Riverside eco-lodge, £15-22

  • →Khao Sok jungle hike to waterfall
  • →Sok River canoeing
  • →Optional Cheow Lan Lake longtail boat trip

Day 6

South to Krabi – Khao Khanap Nam & Ko Klang by tuk-tuk

Krabi

Public minivan or bus from Khao Sok to Krabi town (~£7-9, 3 hrs). In Krabi, hire a longtail boat from the Chao Fah pier to Khao Khanap Nam cave (~£10-12 for the boat, split between passengers) to see the prehistoric paintings and limestone formations. Then take the local longtail ferry across to Ko Klang (~£2) and hire a tuk-tuk/songthaew driver for a loop of the fishing and farming villages (~£12-15 for 2-3 hrs), stopping to chat with villagers about palm sugar and shrimp farming. Evening: Krabi Town night market.

Krabi / Ao Nang

A relaxed day. Take a songthaew to Ao Nang beach (~£2), kayak the Ao Thalane mangroves (~£10-12) or book a shared speedboat day trip to Ko Phi Phi and Maya Bay (~£30-35 direct at Ao Nang beach — same product sold on GetYourGuide/Klook at 1,600-1,900 THB). Snorkel, swim and return for sunset. Finish with a Thai massage (~£7) and dinner in Ao Nang.

Day 8

Return to Bangkok

Bangkok

Fly Krabi–Bangkok on AirAsia/Thai Lion Air (~£25-40 one way, 1 hr 20) instead of the tour's included return. If you have time before your onward flight, leave bags at the airport and take the Airport Rail Link into town for one last bowl of boat noodles or a wander through Chinatown (Yaowarat) — allow 3 hours minimum before your international departure. If you'd rather overland, the Krabi–Bangkok sleeper train via Surat Thani costs about £20-28 but takes ~15 hrs.

🚌Flight £30 + Airport Rail Link £1

🛏None (departure day) or extra Bangkok hostel £10-14

  • →Domestic flight Krabi–Bangkok
  • →Optional Chinatown food stop

Frequently asked questions

How much does DIY Southern Thailand: Bangkok to Krabi Island & Rainforest Escape cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £855 per person for 8 days in Thailand. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,530 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £855 — a saving of roughly £675 (44%) per person.

How long is the Thailand trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Thailand.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, beaches, backpacker trip through Thailand, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
