Classic Thailand & East Coast Island Hopping — Self-Launched
14 days · Thailand
G Adventures charges £2,245
No-markup version: ~£1,060 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of G Adventures' 14-day "Classic Thailand & Island Hopping – East Coast" (code ATEB). You'll cover the same ground: Bangkok's canals and temples, the River Kwai and Erawan Falls in Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya's ruins, a sleeper train north to Chiang Mai, then a hop down the Gulf coast to Koh Tao, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Samui with snorkelling at Koh Nang Yuan and a boat trip to Ang Thong Marine Park. Everything the group tour does with a CEO and private transport is replaced with bookable-by-yourself equivalents: public canal boats, ordinary/2nd-class trains, VIP and local buses, Lomprayah catamaran ferries, and GetYourGuide/Klook day trips. Costs are backpacker-to-flashpacker estimates in GBP and assume dorm or budget private rooms, street food and local transport. Book island ferries and the Chiang Mai sleeper train at least 1–2 weeks ahead in high season (Dec–Mar, Jul–Aug).
Day-by-day
Arrive Bangkok — Chinatown base
Bangkok
Land at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang and take the Airport Rail Link into town (£1–2), then MRT to Hua Lamphong for Chinatown. Check into a hostel or budget hotel around Soi Nana in Talat Noi / Chinatown — the same neighbourhood G Adventures uses. Spend the evening orienting yourself: a beer on a Talat Noi rooftop bar, then a wander down Yaowarat Road for the street food crawl (char kway teow, mango sticky rice, grilled seafood). Grab a Thai SIM/eSIM (£8–12 for 15 days) at the airport or a 7-Eleven.

Bangkok canals & Wat Pho, then to Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi
Do the longtail klong (canal) tour yourself from Tha Chang or Phan Fa Lilat pier — a shared longtail boat through Thonburi's canals costs around £10–15 per hour for the boat, split with whoever's aboard, or join a Klook/GetYourGuide small-group canal tour (£15–25). Walk to Wat Pho (£1.50 entry) for the Reclining Buddha. If you want to try the G Adventures-style rafthouse night, book one night at one of the floating rafthouses on the River Kwai (e.g. near Sai Yok) — most hostels can arrange it. Otherwise take a minivan from Bangkok's Mo Chit bus terminal to Kanchanaburi (2.5–3 hrs, £4–5). Stay near the River Kwai bridge.

For Erawan, the cheapest independent route is the local bus from Kanchanaburi bus station to Erawan (about 1.5 hrs, £2) — go early, entry is £8 and the seven turquoise tiers take 3–4 hrs to walk. Alternatively a Klook/GetYourGuide Erawan + River Kwai day tour runs £25–35 if you'd rather not self-organise. Back in town for dinner at the night market.

In the evening, bus or train to Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat (Bang Sue) station and board the overnight train to Chiang Mai — book a 2nd-class sleeper berth on the Thai Railways site or 12Go (£20–28, departs around 18:00–22:00, arrives 07:00–09:00). Bring snacks; the dining car is cheap.

In the afternoon take a red songthaew (£2) up to Doi Suthep and Wat Phra That (£1.50) for the view over the city. Budget airlines (Thai Lion, Nok, AirAsia) from Chiang Mai to Don Mueang run £25–45 booked a few weeks out and take 1 hr 10. Back in Bangkok, return to the Chinatown hostel and spend the afternoon at Wat Arun (£1.50 plus £1 ferry) or the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Pre-book tomorrow's bus/ferry south tonight — a joint bus+ferry ticket from Bangkok to Koh Tao via Lomprayah or Seatran runs £20–28.

Joint tickets are £20–28 and can be bought on 12Go or at any Khao San travel agent. Use the wait at Chumphon Pier for a beach walk and cheap lunch — that's exactly the G Adventures 'leisure time at Chumphon Pier'. The standard circuit hits Koh Nang Yuan, Mango Bay, Hin Wong Bay, Ao Leuk and Shark Bay. If you dive, an intro dive is £38–45. Note: many boats stop at Koh Nang Yuan where there's a small extra landing fee — carry cash. Back in the evening, eat at a beach BBQ on Sairee.

Check into a beach bungalow around Salad/Chaloklum (£12–20) — this is the quiet north-west corner, far from the Full Moon party chaos. If you're not flying out the same day, a night bus+ferry back to Bangkok via Surat Thani is £18–25 instead.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Classic Thailand & East Coast Island Hopping — Self-Launched cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,060 per person for 14 days in Thailand. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,245 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,060 — a saving of roughly £1,185 (53%) per person.
How long is the Thailand trip?+
This itinerary runs 14 days, covering 14 day-by-day stops through Thailand.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, culture, beaches trip through Thailand, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
