G Adventures charges £1,450

£365saved per person (25%)

No-markup version: ~£1,085 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 7-day Tanzania Express Camping Adventure. You'll start and finish in Arusha, spend a night in Mto wa Mbu where you can visit a Maasai village and community tourism projects directly, then join a locally-run budget camping safari through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater — the classic northern circuit. Everything is bookable independently: hostels/guesthouses in Arusha, a public shuttle or dalla-dalla to Mto wa Mbu, and a shared camping safari booked direct with an Arusha-based operator (or via a GetYourGuide/Klook listing) rather than through a Western tour company. Costs are rough estimates for a solo backpacker sharing a tent on a group camping safari, excluding international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Arusha

Arusha

Land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or arrive by shuttle from Nairobi. Take a local taxi or airport shuttle into Arusha town (roughly £15-20 / TZS 50,000-65,000 for a shared shuttle, more for a private taxi). Base yourself at a budget hostel or guesthouse near the clock tower — most Arusha hostels arrange airport pickups and can also book safaris. Spend the afternoon exploring the Central Market and the Maasai Market for crafts, then grab dinner at a local 'hoteli' (small eatery) for ugali, beans and grilled meat for £2-4. Evening: a Tusker or Kilimanjaro beer at a bar off Sokoine Road, and confirm your safari pickup time for tomorrow or the day after. Pay for your safari deposit in cash or by card at the operator's office if you haven't already.

Day 2

Arusha to Mto wa Mbu — Maasai village and community projects

Mto wa Mbu

Take a public shuttle bus or dalla-dalla from Arusha to Mto wa Mbu (about 2 hours, roughly £4-6 / TZS 12,000-18,000). Mto wa Mbu is the gateway town to Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Highlands — a busy, friendly farming town. Book a Maasai village visit directly through a local guide (many guesthouses in Mto wa Mbu can arrange one for £20-30, including transport and a community contribution) or join a community tourism walk organised by the Mto wa Mbu Cultural Tourism Programme, which supports local projects including fuel-efficient cookstove initiatives. In the afternoon, do the Mto wa Mbu village cycling tour or a banana-and-rice farm walk with a local lunch (£15-25) — bookable through your guesthouse or GetYourGuide. Stay overnight in a basic guesthouse or campsite in town.

Day 3

Mto wa Mbu to Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

Your camping safari begins early — most Arusha-based operators collect from Mto wa Mbu en route. Drive via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Naabi Hill Gate into the central Serengeti, with a game drive en route through the plains. Expect your first sightings of zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, elephant and, with luck, lion. Book this leg as a multi-day shared camping safari direct with a licensed Arusha operator (or via a GetYourGuide/Klook 'Serengeti & Ngorongoro camping safari' listing) — this is the biggest cost of the trip, roughly £380-550 per person for a 4-day/3-night camping safari including park fees, 4x4 vehicle, driver-guide, cook and camping equipment. Bring your own sleeping bag (hire or buy in Arusha for £15-30 if needed). Night at a basic public campsite in the Serengeti — no electricity, squat toilets, but incredible stars.

Day 4

Full day in the Serengeti

Serengeti National Park

A full day of game drives in the central Serengeti — the Seronera Valley is the classic spot for leopard, lion and cheetah, plus huge herds of buffalo and elephant. Your driver-guide will carry a picnic lunch so you can stay out through the heat of the day. Budget extra for bottled water and snacks from the camp shop. Optional upgrade: a Serengeti hot air balloon safari with champagne breakfast, typically £450-550 per person booked direct with the balloon companies (Serengeti Balloon Safaris or Miracle Experience) — skip it if you're keeping costs down, the ground-level game drive is excellent value. Return to camp for dinner and a campfire.

🛏Shared safari tent at Serengeti public campsite (included in safari package)

Day 5

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater rim

Ngorongoro Crater rim

Morning game drive out of the Serengeti before heading south-east toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Stop at Olduvai Gorge if your operator offers it (usually a small extra fee, ~£10-15) — the famous palaeontological site where early hominid fossils were found. Climb up to the crater rim in the late afternoon (the road up from the highlands is spectacular) and camp on the rim at Simba campsite or similar. It gets cold at 2,300m — pack warm layers. Simple washing facilities and occasionally warm showers; generator electricity only.

Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater safari drive, return to Arusha

Arusha

Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater early in the morning (entrance fees included in the safari package) — a 260 sq km caldera packed with zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, buffalo, warthog, hippo, elephant and the crater's famously dense lion population, plus a real chance of black rhino. Picnic lunch at the Ngoitokitok springs with hippos nearby. Climb out of the crater in the afternoon and drive back to Arusha (about 3-4 hours). Your safari operator drops you at your hostel or in town. Shower, laundry, and a well-earned dinner in town.

🚌4x4 safari vehicle back to Arusha (included in safari package)

🛏Budget hostel/guesthouse in Arusha town, £12-18

  • →Ngorongoro Crater game drive and picnic lunch
  • →Crater descent and ascent

Day 7

Arusha — depart (or extend)

Arusha

Depart at any time. If your flight is late in the day, spend the morning at the Arusha Declaration Museum or the Cultural Heritage Centre, or do a short hike in the Ilkidinga area with a local Maasai guide (~£40-60 booked locally, cheaper than through an operator). If you're extending, this is the natural point to add a Kilimanjaro day hike, a trip to Moshi, or a bus to Dar es Salaam for the ferry to Zanzibar (bus ~£15-20, ferry ~£30). Shared shuttle back to JRO roughly £15-20. Remember to tip your safari driver-guide and cook (~£5-8 per person per day is a fair guide, paid in cash).

🚌Shared shuttle to Kilimanjaro Airport, ~£15-20

🛏None (departure day)

  • →Optional Ilkidinga village hike (~£40-60)
  • →Arusha Declaration Museum or Cultural Heritage Centre

Frequently asked questions

How much does Tanzania Express Safari Self-Launched Adventure: Arusha, Maasai Villages & the Serengeti cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,085 per person for 7 days in Tanzania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,450 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,085 — a saving of roughly £365 (25%) per person.

How long is the Tanzania trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Tanzania.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Tanzania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
