Self-Launched Incredible Tanzania: Serengeti to Zanzibar

G Adventures charges £3,075

£1,995saved per person (65%)

No-markup version: ~£1,080 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 9-day "Incredible Tanzania: Serengeti to Zanzibar" — same northern safari circuit (Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti) plus Stone Town and Jambiani on Zanzibar, but booked independently. Join a shared small-group camping safari departing Arusha (most operators run 4-7 day camping trips for roughly £550-700 all-in including park fees, driver-guide-set-up camp and most meals), then fly or take the ferry to Zanzibar for a few days of spice farms and Indian Ocean beaches. Accommodation is swapped for comfortable guesthouses and permanent-tent camps, and safari drives are self-bookable shared departures rather than a private vehicle. Costs are rough estimates at current backpacker rates and exclude international flights into/out of Tanzania.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Arusha

Arusha

Fly into Kilimanjaro International (JRO) and take a shared shuttle or daladala/taxi into Arusha town (~£15-25 taxi, ~£5 shared shuttle). Base yourself in a central guesthouse, sort out cash at an ATM (Tanzanian shillings), buy a local SIM (Vodacom/Airtel, ~£3) and do your own 'welcome meeting' with the safari outfit you've booked for tomorrow. Sort water, snacks and any gear you still need at the central market or a shop on Sokoine Road. Eat dinner at a local spot around the clock tower area.

Tarangire National Park / Karatu

Early pick-up by a shared safari 4x4 (most operators run 4-7 day departures with 6-7 passengers per vehicle). Drive ~2 hours to Tarangire National Park, famous for huge elephant herds, baobabs and the Tarangire River. Afternoon game drive with your driver-guide, picnic lunch inside the park, then continue on to Karatu in the Ngorongoro highlands for the night. Park fees, vehicle and guide are packaged into the safari price.

Free morning in cool, green Karatu. Either relax at the guesthouse or, if you fancy more wildlife, take an optional morning game drive in Lake Manyara National Park (bookable directly through your safari operator or a local guide, ~£75-90 including park fees) to see tree-climbing lions, flamingos and hippos. In the afternoon join a coffee plantation walk near Karatu — several farms offer 2-3 hour tours with sorting, roasting and tasting for ~£15-20 booked direct or via your guesthouse. Picnic lunch at the Ngoitokitok springs (watch your sandwiches around the kites!). Climb back out and drive through the Naabi Hill Gate into the Serengeti, game-viewing en route to camp in time for sunset.

Full-day game drive across the central Serengeti (Seronera area is reliable for leopard, lion and cheetah), picnic lunch under an acacia, back to camp for sundowners.

Safari ends; check back into your Arusha guesthouse and eat out in town.

Land in Zanzibar, wander Stone Town's alleys on a self-guided orientation — Forodhani Gardens, the Old Fort, Darajani Market — then take a dala-dala or shared taxi south to Jambiani (~£10-15, 1 hr). Check into a beach guesthouse and eat at a local restaurant.

Afternoon free: swim, hire a snorkelling trip to the reef directly from a local boatman (~£25-30) or take a dala-dala to Jozani Forest to see red colobus monkeys (~£15-20 including entry and transport). Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Incredible Tanzania: Serengeti to Zanzibar cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,080 per person for 9 days in Tanzania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £3,075 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,080 — a saving of roughly £1,995 (65%) per person.

How long is the Tanzania trip?+

This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Tanzania.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, beaches trip through Tanzania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
