A self-launched version of the classic 4-day Northern Circuit safari from Moshi: Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, done without a group tour package. Instead of booking a US$1,600 operator package, you build the same route yourself — a dala-dala or shared shuttle from Moshi/Arusha, a public bus to Karatu, and then a shared/join-in safari vehicle (the standard budget traveller option) for the crater and Serengeti game drives, sleeping in public campsites inside the parks. Join-in safari seats are sold per person by Moshi-based operators and local booking agents (including via GetYourGuide), so you keep the same wildlife experience at a fraction of the package price. Costs are approximate and vary with season and group size.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Moshi/Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Moshi → Karatu → Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Get an early start from Moshi. Take a local bus or shared shuttle to Arusha (roughly 2 hours, £3–5), then a public bus or shared minivan from Arusha to Karatu via Makuyuni (about 2.5–3 hours, £5–7). In Karatu, meet the join-in safari vehicle and guide you've pre-booked (book at least a few days ahead — operators in Moshi/Arusha and GetYourGuide sell per-seat join-in safaris for the Ngorongoro + Serengeti route). Pay the Ngorongoro Conservation Area entry and crater service fees (usually bundled into your join-in seat price, otherwise ~£55–65). Descend into the crater for an afternoon game drive — black rhino, lion, elephant, flamingo and hippo are the headline sightings. Overnight at the public campsite on the crater rim (Simba or Ngorongoro Wild Camp style), where it gets cold at night — bring a warm layer.

🚌Local bus/shared shuttle Moshi–Arusha (£3–5) + public bus Arusha–Karatu (£5–7) + join-in 4WD with open roof

🛏Public campsite on Ngorongoro rim (own tent or pre-erected tent hire, ~£12–18 pp)

  • →Afternoon game drive in Ngorongoro Crater
  • →Wildlife spotting: black rhino, lion, elephant, flamingo
  • →Sunset at crater rim campsite
~£150
Day 2

Ngorongoro to Serengeti National Park

Ngorongoro → Serengeti (Naabi Hill gate)

Break camp early and drive up and over the crater highlands, through the Naabi Hill gate and into the Serengeti. This is a long game-drive transfer day — expect 5–6 hours in the vehicle with stops, so use the open roof to stand and stretch. Your join-in safari covers park fees for Serengeti (roughly £60–70 per 24 hours for non-residents, normally included in the seat price). Game drive en route to camp, with good odds of giraffe, zebra, wildebeest herds, and if you're lucky, cheetah. Optional stop at a Maasai village near Ngorongoro (small entry fee ~£10–15, negotiate directly — skip it if it feels staged). Overnight at a public campsite inside the Serengeti (Seronera/Nyani area).

🚌Join-in 4WD safari vehicle with open viewing roof

🛏Serengeti public campsite (Seronera or Nyani, ~£12–18 pp)

  • →Full-day game drive transfer into the Serengeti
  • →Naabi Hill viewpoint stop
  • →Optional Maasai village visit
~£120
Day 3

Full Day in the Serengeti

Serengeti National Park (Seronera Valley)

A full day of game viewing in the Serengeti — the best day of the trip. Head out at dawn when predators are active, work the Seronera Valley and surrounding kopjes, and take a picnic lunch in the park rather than returning to camp. Depending on the season, your guide can push toward the migration herds (the western corridor and north in the dry season, southern plains after the rains). Keep an eye out for leopard in the riverine trees and lion prides on the granite outcrops. Return to camp for dinner and a campfire under a genuinely dark sky.

🚌Join-in 4WD safari vehicle

🛏Serengeti public campsite (same camp, ~£12–18 pp)

  • →Dawn game drive in Seronera Valley
  • →Picnic lunch in the park
  • →Afternoon game viewing around the kopjes
  • →Campfire and stargazing
~£110
Day 4

Serengeti Game Drive and Return to Moshi/Arusha

Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha/Moshi

Half-day game drive out of the Serengeti, exiting via Naabi Hill and crossing the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Your join-in safari normally ends in Arusha or Moshi (confirm at booking — some operators drop in Karatu instead, in which case take a public bus back to Arusha, ~£5–7, then a shuttle to Moshi, ~£3–5). Expect to arrive late afternoon/early evening. If you're flying out of Kilimanjaro the next morning, grab a cheap guesthouse in Moshi and sort a shared taxi or shuttle to JRO (~£10–15).

🚌Join-in 4WD to Arusha/Moshi + local bus/shuttle if needed

🛏Budget guesthouse in Moshi/Arusha if staying an extra night (~£10–15 pp, not included in trip total)

  • →Morning game drive in the Serengeti
  • →Exit via Naabi Hill gate
  • →Scenic drive through Ngorongoro Conservation Area
~£70

Frequently asked questions

How much does Elephant Safari Discover Tanzania 4 Days — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £450 per person for 4 days in Tanzania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with World Adventure Tours?+

Yes — World Adventure Tours charges around £1,280 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £450 — a saving of roughly £830 (65%) per person.

How long is the Tanzania trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Tanzania.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Tanzania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
