Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire & Materuni — 6-Day Self-Launched Tanzania Safari

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire & Materuni — 6-Day Self-Launched Tanzania Safari

6 days · Tanzania (Arusha, Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Materuni)

Serengeti African Tours charges £1,400

£305saved per person (22%)

No-markup version: ~£1,095 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of the classic 6-day northern Tanzania safari circuit: Tarangire's baobabs and elephants, two nights in the Serengeti's Seronera plains, a full descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions and flamingos, and a Chagga cultural day at Materuni waterfall and coffee farms below Kilimanjaro. Where the operator sells a fully guided group jeep with a cook, this version is built on Arusha's public and shared transport, public campsites inside the parks booked directly through TANAPA, and self-booked day tours for the Materuni portion. Note: public transport can't reach the park gates, so the budget requires one shared/seat-in-vehicle safari leg or a 4WD from a local Arusha operator — this is the single biggest cost, and prices quoted are backpacker estimates only. Costs exclude international flights and travel insurance.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Arusha / Tarangire National Park

Pre-book a shared seat-in-vehicle safari jeep from Arusha (most Arusha operators will take solo travellers joining groups for roughly $370-450/£290-355 for a 4-5 day camping safari including park fees and food — confirm park fees are included). Leave Arusha 7-8am, stop at the TANAPA gate to register, then spend the afternoon driving the Tarangire river loops: huge elephant herds, baobabs, and the park's famous lion prides. Eat your packed lunch at the Tarangire River picnic site where you can watch wildlife from the bank. Overnight at a public campsite just outside the park (e.g. Twiga Camp or Fanaka) or a nearby budget guesthouse in Mto wa Mbu. Buy water, fruit and snacks in Arusha before leaving — park shops are extortionate.

🚌Shared safari jeep from Arusha, dep. 7-8am (~2.5 hrs to the gate)

🛏Public campsite near Tarangire gate or budget guesthouse in Mto wa Mbu (dorm/banda, £12-18)

  • →Afternoon game drive through Tarangire National Park
  • →Tarangire River picnic site stop
  • →Elephant and baobab spotting
~£330
Day 2

Tarangire to Serengeti via Ngorongoro Crater rim

Serengeti National Park (Seronera)

Long driving day — expect 6-7 hours with stops. Head up through Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, pausing at the crater rim viewpoint for the classic photo over the caldera. Picnic at the viewpoint, then continue across the short-grass plains into the Serengeti via the Naabi Hill gate. Stop at Naabi Hill for the viewpoint walk, then drive the Seronera valley roads for late-afternoon game viewing before dark. Overnight at Seronera's public campsite (TANAPA-run, booked via your safari vehicle operator — expect very basic shared toilets and showers, so bring wet wipes and a headtorch).

🚌Shared safari jeep, Tarangire → Ngorongoro rim → Serengeti Naabi gate (~6-7 hrs driving)

🛏Seronera public campsite, Serengeti NP (own tent, camping gear provided by the safari operator) — included in safari price

  • →Ngorongoro Crater rim viewpoint
  • →Naabi Hill gate viewpoint
  • →Afternoon game drive in the Seronera valley
~£70
Day 3

Full day in the Serengeti

Serengeti National Park (Seronera / Moru Kopjes)

Two game drives today: a 6am dawn drive (best predator activity — lions, leopards, hyena returning from the hunt) back for brunch at camp, then an afternoon loop out towards the Moru Kopjes and Maasai rock art area. This is the central Serengeti, so the big herds of the northern Great Migration aren't on the route — if migration viewing is your priority, you need a private vehicle and to budget for northern Serengeti campsites instead. Ask your driver to radio other cars for sightings. Dinner at camp with your cook if the price included one, otherwise self-catered pasta/rice.

🚌Shared safari jeep — short drives out of camp, no road transfer costs today

🛏Seronera public campsite, Serengeti NP (second night)

  • →Dawn game drive in the Serengeti
  • →Afternoon game drive toward Moru Kopjes
  • →Maasai rock paintings stop
~£60
Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater descent and rhino tracking

Ngorongoro Crater

Leave camp early (5.30-6am) to be at the Lodoare/ Seneto descent road for opening. The single access road down opens at 6am and vehicles are limited — arriving late means queuing. Spend 5-6 hours on the crater floor: black rhino in the Lerai Forest area, huge lion prides, flamingos on Lake Magadi, elephant bulls and buffalo. Lunch at the Ngoitokitok picnic site (watch your food — the black kites are notorious thieves). Climb back out mid-afternoon and drive to a campsite at Karatu or the crater rim for the night. Crater service fees are paid by your safari operator, but bring cash for a tip to the descent-road ranger if asked.

🚌Shared safari jeep — Serengeti → Ngorongoro descent road (~3 hrs) and out to Karatu

🛏Budget guesthouse or campsite in Karatu (banda/dorm, £15-20)

  • →Full descent into Ngorongoro Crater
  • →Black rhino tracking in the Lerai Forest
  • →Ngoitokitok picnic site lunch
  • →Flamingo and lion viewing on the crater floor
~£55
Day 5

Lake Manyara National Park, then back to Arusha

Lake Manyara National Park / Arusha

Morning drive to Lake Manyara's gate and an early game drive along the groundwater forest and lakeshore tracks — famous for tree-climbing lions, huge baboon troops and thousands of flamingos when water levels allow. Stop at the hippo pool viewpoint. Then travel back to Arusha by local bus or dalla-dalla from Mto wa Mbu or Mto wa Mbu bus stand (~3-4 hrs, TSh 10,000-15,000 / £4-6) arriving mid-afternoon. Check into a budget guesthouse in Arusha (e.g. around Njiro or Sokoine Road, £15-22 for a private single). Evening: eat at a local 'hoteli' for a cheap Tanzanian plate of ugali, beans and greens (£2-3).

🚌Safari jeep to Lake Manyara gate; then local bus Mto wa Mbu → Arusha (~£5)

🛏Budget guesthouse/hostel in Arusha (private single ~£18)

  • →Game drive in Lake Manyara National Park
  • →Hippo pool viewpoint
  • →Lakeshore flamingo and birdwatching
~£60
Day 6

Materuni Waterfall, coffee farm and Chagga lunch

Materuni Village / Moshi

Book a Materuni day trip independently via GetYourGuide or a Moshi-based local guide (roughly $45-65 / £35-50 including transport from Moshi, waterfall entry fee, coffee tour and Chagga lunch — day trips from Arusha cost a bit more, £55-70). Take a local bus Arusha → Moshi (~2 hrs, TSh 5,000-8,000 / £2-4) for a 7.30-8am start, or pay extra for pickup. Hike ~40 minutes down to the 80m Materuni waterfall (bring shoes with grip — it's muddy), then return to the village for the coffee process: picking, roasting, grinding with traditional songs and dancing, and banana beer tasting. Finish with a Chagga lunch of banana stew and pilau before the bus back to Arusha. Note the last buses to Arusha leave Moshi around 5-6pm; if you're flying out of Kilimanjaro (JRO) tonight, take an evening flight after 8pm — the airport is 1 hr from Arusha and 45 mins from Moshi.

🚌Local bus Arusha ↔ Moshi (~£4 return), shared transfer to Materuni village trailhead included in day trip

🛏None included — overnight in Arusha if needed (£18) or onward flight

  • →Materuni waterfall hike (~40 mins each way)
  • →Coffee cultivation and processing tour
  • →Coffee grinding with traditional Chagga songs and dance
  • →Banana beer tasting
  • →Traditional Chagga lunch in the village
~£70

Frequently asked questions

How much does Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire & Materuni — 6-Day Self-Launched Tanzania Safari cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,095 per person for 6 days in Tanzania (Arusha, Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Materuni). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Serengeti African Tours?+

Yes — Serengeti African Tours charges around £1,400 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,095 — a saving of roughly £305 (22%) per person.

How long is the Tanzania (Arusha, Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Materuni) trip?+

This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Tanzania (Arusha, Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Materuni).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Tanzania (Arusha, Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Materuni), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
