A self-launched, backpacker-friendly take on the classic 2-day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Crater safari from Arusha. Instead of paying for a private mid-range group departure, you book onto a shared camping safari departure (the standard budget route used by Arusha's independent operators) or join a group seat-in-vehicle safari, staying in budget lodges/camps outside the parks. You get the same two headline experiences — big elephant herds and baobabs in Tarangire, and a full crater-floor game drive in Ngorongoro — while handling park fees, transport and guiding through a local operator direct rather than a marketplace. Note that Tanzania park fees are fixed and high, so the floor cost of a safari is set by regulation; the savings come from skipping agency commission and mid-range lodge upgrades. Costs are rough, current-shoulder-season estimates per person sharing.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park — elephants and baobabs

Arusha / Tarangire National Park

Get picked up early (aim for 7:00-7:30am) from your Arusha hostel or guesthouse in a shared 4x4 with other budget travellers — this is the standard 'seat in vehicle' model used by Arusha operators, so expect to share with 4-6 others. Drive ~2 hours southwest on the Dodoma road to Tarangire's main gate; the drive itself is a great intro to Maasai steppe scenery. Spend the afternoon on a game drive through the park's baobab-studded grasslands and along the Tarangire River, where elephant herds concentrate in the dry season. Watch for giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, lions and dozens of bird species. Late afternoon, exit the park and transfer to a budget lodge/campsite near Karatu or the crater rim area — the budget equivalent of the mid-range lodges used on group departures. Cooked dinner at the camp and an early night ahead of the crater start.

🚌Shared safari 4x4 pickup from Arusha accommodation, ~2 hrs to Tarangire gate; included in safari package price if booked with a local operator (~£0 extra, but confirm pickup is included)

🛏Budget safari lodge or permanent-tent camp near Karatu / Ngorongoro rim (twin share, en-suite, ~£22-25 pp)

  • →Shared 4x4 game drive in Tarangire National Park (self-booked via local Arusha operator)
  • →Elephant, baobab and birdlife viewing along the Tarangire River
  • →Budget lodge/campsite stay near Karatu (equivalent to mid-range safari lodge tier)
~£190
Day 2

Ngorongoro Crater game drive and back to Arusha

Ngorongoro Crater / Arusha

Leave camp around 6:00-6:30am to be at the crater rim gate for the early descent — worth the alarm, as the light and animal activity are best first thing. Descend 600m into the caldera on the steep access road and spend 4-5 hours on the crater floor: this is one of the most reliable places in Tanzania to see black rhino, plus lion, buffalo, elephant, hyena, jackal, flamingo and hippo around the swamps and Lerai Forest. Eat a packed lunch at the Hippo Pool picnic site (your operator provides this, same as the group tour). Climb back out of the crater by early afternoon, then drive ~4 hours back to Arusha, arriving late afternoon/early evening — drop-off can be arranged at your hostel, Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) for onward flights. Optional stop for curio shopping in Arusha on the way in.

🚌Shared safari 4x4 from camp to Ngorongoro rim and descent road; return drive to Arusha ~4 hrs; drop-off at hostel, Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO)

🛏None included (return to own Arusha accommodation or onward flight) — budget guesthouse in Arusha if needed, ~£15-20 pp

  • →Full crater-floor game drive in Ngorongoro Conservation Area (park fee + vehicle permit)
  • →Black rhino, lion and flamingo spotting from the crater floor
  • →Packed lunch at Hippo Pool picnic site
  • →Optional curio shopping in Arusha
~£240

Frequently asked questions

How much does Tarangire & Ngorongoro Self-Launched Budget Safari cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £430 per person for 2 days in Tanzania (Arusha, Tarangire & Ngorongoro). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Travel Africa Safari Agency?+

Yes — Travel Africa Safari Agency charges around £470 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £430 — a saving of roughly £40 (9%) per person.

How long is the Tanzania (Arusha, Tarangire & Ngorongoro) trip?+

This itinerary runs 2 days, covering 2 day-by-day stops through Tanzania (Arusha, Tarangire & Ngorongoro).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Tanzania (Arusha, Tarangire & Ngorongoro), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
