SAFARI360 charges £1,450

£925saved per person (64%)

No-markup version: ~£525 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of SAFARI360's 4-day Tarangire–Ngorongoro–Serengeti circuit, booked directly with a local Arusha safari operator as a shared/joined camping safari rather than a private fully-guided tour. You still get the open-roof 4x4, the same parks and the same wildlife, but you travel in a small shared group with other backpackers — the single biggest cost saver on Tanzanian safaris. Park fees are fixed and non-negotiable, so most savings come from shared vehicle costs, basic tented camps instead of lodges, and booking direct in Arusha rather than through an agency. All figures are approximate and per person.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Kilimanjaro / Arusha — Tarangire National Park

Arusha & Tarangire National Park

Land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and take a local shuttle or dala-dala from the airport road into Arusha town (~£5-8; shared shuttle taxis run the route regularly). Sort your safari the day before departure — or on arrival if you've pre-arranged it — with one of the Arusha-based operators who sell joined camping safaris (expect £450-600pp for 4 days including park fees, vehicle, guide, cook and camping). Morning pick-up in a shared open-roof Land Cruiser, then a 2-hour drive west to Tarangire National Park. Afternoon full game drive among the baobabs — Tarangire has Tanzania's densest elephant population plus buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and tree-climbing lions. Overnight at a public campsite just outside the park; the operator's cook handles dinner.

🚌Airport shuttle to Arusha ~£6; shared 4x4 game-drive vehicle included in safari package

🛏Public campsite tent (shared, 2-person dome tent) outside Tarangire — approx £20pp

  • →Self-arranged joined camping safari (book direct with Arusha operator or via GetYourGuide)
  • →Full-afternoon game drive in Tarangire National Park
  • →Elephant and baobab viewing
~£145
Day 2

Ngorongoro Crater descent — on to Serengeti

Ngorongoro Conservation Area & Serengeti National Park

Early breakfast at camp, then drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate (park fee ~£55pp + crater service fee ~£25pp, normally bundled into your package price). Descend 600m into the crater on the steep one-way track and spend the morning on the crater floor around Lake Magadi — this is your best shot at black rhino, plus lion, hyena, jackal, elephant, hippo and flamingos. Picnic lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs (watch your sandwiches — the kites are ruthless). Climb back out and drive the scenic rim road towards the Serengeti, entering via Naabi Hill Gate in the late afternoon. Overnight at a basic tented camp or public campsite in the Serengeti; listen for lions calling after dark.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle; ~5-6 hours driving plus game viewing

🛏Serengeti public campsite / basic tented camp — approx £25pp

  • →Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive
  • →Lake Magadi flamingo and hippo viewing
  • →Picnic lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs
  • →Scenic drive across the crater rim into the Serengeti
~£165
Day 3

Full day in the Serengeti

Serengeti National Park

Full day of game driving across the Serengeti plains with a packed lunch — the vehicle follows the herds and the guide radios other drivers about cat sightings. Depending on the season you'll be in the central Seronera area (resident lion, leopard in the river trees, cheetah on the plains) or further north/west for the migration. Sunrise start is worth it: predators are active in the cool hours. Back to camp for dinner and a fire; bring a headtorch and cash for drinks.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle, full-day game driving

🛏Serengeti public campsite / basic tented camp — approx £25pp

  • →Full-day Serengeti game drive
  • →Big cat and migration herd viewing
  • →Optional: balloon safari booked independently (~£450pp, skip it to keep costs down)
~£120
Day 4

Serengeti — Ngorongoro rim — back to Arusha/Kilimanjaro

Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area & Arusha

Dawn game drive out of the Serengeti, then exit via Naabi Hill. Stop at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area viewpoint on the rim for a last look into the crater and a photo stop at the craft stalls. Long drive back to Arusha arriving early evening; drop at your guesthouse or straight to Kilimanjaro Airport if you have a night flight. If you're staying on, Arusha has cheap guesthouses (~£15-20) and good street food around the clock tower.

🚌Shared 4x4 back to Arusha (~6 hours); airport shuttle ~£6 if needed

🛏None included — Arusha guesthouse if staying on (~£18) or onward flight

  • →Morning Serengeti game drive
  • →Ngorongoro Conservation Area rim viewpoint
  • →Maasai craft stalls stop
~£85

Frequently asked questions

How much does 4-Day Northern Tanzania Safari — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £525 per person for 4 days in Tanzania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with SAFARI360?+

Yes — SAFARI360 charges around £1,450 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £525 — a saving of roughly £925 (64%) per person.

How long is the Tanzania trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Tanzania.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Tanzania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
