A DIY version of G Adventures' 5-day G Lodge Amazon & Camping trip. Base yourself at an independently bookable Tambopata river lodge near Puerto Maldonado, then add a two-night jungle camping extension with a local guide. You get the same highlights — night walks, oxbow lakes, macaw clay licks, caiman-spotting by canoe — booked directly or via GetYourGuide/Klook, using shared river boats and lodge transfers instead of a private group departure. Budget rates assume a mid-range eco-lodge dorm/private room plus a community-run camping expedition; all costs are approximate and exclude flights to Puerto Maldonado.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Puerto Maldonado & boat to the Tambopata river lodge

Puerto Maldonado / Tambopata

Fly into Puerto Maldonado (flights from Lima or Cusco not included). Take a mototaxi from the airport to the town centre or directly to your lodge's river office (~S/10-15, £2-3). Many independently bookable lodges along the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers include shared boat transfers — confirm pickup time in advance. Motorised canoe downriver takes 1.5-3 hours depending on lodge location. After settling into your room or dorm and lunch, do a short self-guided walk on the lodge trails, then join an evening night walk with a lodge naturalist guide (usually included free or ~£10 extra). Watch for tarantulas, owls, frogs, snakes and caimans. Pack light — most boats limit luggage to 10kg.

🚌Mototaxi from airport to river port (~S/10) + shared motorised canoe to lodge (usually included in lodge rate or ~S/60 / £13)

🛏Independently booked Tambopata eco-lodge — dorm bed or basic private room with mosquito net and shared bathrooms (£18-22/night incl. breakfast)

  • →Shared riverboat transfer to lodge
  • →Evening night walk with lodge naturalist guide
Day 2

Oxbow lake excursion & set off for jungle camp

Tambopata

Morning excursion by canoe to a nearby oxbow lake (cocha) — go early, around 6am, for the best birdlife: hoatzins, kingfishers, herons and maybe giant river otters if you're lucky. Many lodges run these as included guided excursions; if not, arrange through your lodge or a local Puerto Maldonado operator via GetYourGuide. Back for lunch, then in the afternoon transfer upriver by canoe with a local guide and porters to a jungle campsite. Set up camp: locally provided tents with mosquito nets and foam mattresses, shared chemical toilets, a dining tent and hammocks. Dinner cooked by camp staff, then a second night walk from camp — you're now much deeper in primary forest.

🚌Shared motorised canoe upriver (~1.5-2 hrs)

🛏Jungle camping — tent, mattress, sleeping bag provided by expedition operator (£18-22/night incl. meals)

  • →Dawn canoe trip to an oxbow lake
  • →Upriver canoe transfer to jungle campsite
  • →Guided night walk from camp
Day 3

Macaw clay lick & forest trail hiking

Tambopata

Pre-dawn start to reach a clay lick (collpa) — macaws, parrots and parakeets descend to eat mineral-rich clay at first light, one of the Amazon's great wildlife spectacles. Your camp guide will know the nearest active lick; positions vary seasonally so ask on arrival. Spend the rest of the day hiking different forest trails looking for monkeys, peccaries, medicinal plants and insects, with your guide explaining traditional plant uses. A local naturalist guide typically costs around S/120-180 (£25-40) per day shared between 2-4 travellers; if you're solo, joining a small shared group through your lodge or a Puerto Maldonado operator keeps costs down. Dinner and another night at camp.

🚌On foot and short canoe hops

🛏Jungle camping — tent, mattress, sleeping bag (£18-22/night incl. meals)

  • →Sunrise macaw clay lick viewing
  • →Guided day hikes on forest trails
  • →Medicinal plant & wildlife interpretation
Day 4

Return to lodge, oxbow lake hike & caiman-spotting cruise

Tambopata

Break camp after breakfast and canoe back to the lodge, arriving for lunch. In the afternoon hike to a second oxbow lake — different water, different birds (think horned screamers, wattled jacanas and hoatzins). After dark, head out by motorised canoe with a spotlight to search for caimans on the river banks and other nocturnal wildlife. This is a classic included activity at most Tambopata lodges (often ~£15-25 extra if not bundled). Note: swimming in jungle streams is only advised at spots the lodge team confirms are safe — caiman and piranha are real, and locals know where it's fine.

🚌Canoe back to lodge + evening motorised canoe

🛏Tambopata eco-lodge — dorm bed or basic private room (£18-22/night incl. breakfast)

  • →Guided hike to an oxbow lake
  • →Night-time caiman-spotting canoe cruise
Day 5

Canoe back to Puerto Maldonado & onward flight

Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast, take the shared canoe back downriver to Puerto Maldonado (1.5-3 hrs). Collect stored luggage from the lodge office, then mototaxi to the airport. Don't book any flight out before 11am — river boats are weather- and engine-dependent and delays happen. If you have time before your flight, the Mercado Modelo in town is great for a cheap plate of tacacho or juane, and you can stock up on insect repellent and water purification tablets.

🚌Shared canoe to Puerto Maldonado (usually included or ~S/60 / £13) + mototaxi to airport (~S/10 / £2)

🛏N/A — departure day

  • →Shared canoe transfer downriver
  • →Explore Puerto Maldonado market (optional)

Frequently asked questions

How much does Tambopata Amazon Lodge & Jungle Camping — 5 Day Self-Launched Adventure cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £436 per person for 5 days in Tambopata, Peruvian Amazon (Puerto Maldonado). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,099 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £436 — a saving of roughly £663 (60%) per person.

How long is the Tambopata, Peruvian Amazon (Puerto Maldonado) trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Tambopata, Peruvian Amazon (Puerto Maldonado).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Tambopata, Peruvian Amazon (Puerto Maldonado), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
