A DIY version of CondeTravel's 4-day Tambopata jungle circuit, booked directly with a Puerto Maldonado lodge rather than through TourRadar. You fly into Puerto Maldonado, motor-boat up the Tambopata River to a jungle lodge, watch hundreds of macaws and parrots gather at the El Chuncho clay lick at dawn, then hike and canoe on Sandoval Lake with giant otters. Lodges in this region sell the same 3-night packages direct (with shared guides) at noticeably less than the marketplace price, and you can shave more by taking the cheaper shared-boat transfers and paying reserve entrance fees yourself. Expect heat, early starts, basic fan-cooled rooms and unforgettable wildlife — this is a genuinely easy trip to self-launch. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Fly into Puerto Maldonado & boat up the Tambopata River

Puerto Maldonado → Tambopata River lodge

Arrive on a morning flight from Lima or Cusco (LATAM/Sky are cheapest booked direct; aim to land by 11am). Instead of a company airport pickup, take a taxi from the airport to the Puerto Maldonado river port (~S/15-20 / £3-4), or arrange a shared lodge transfer when you email the lodge directly. Buy a box lunch and 5-6 litres of water in town first. From the port, hop the lodge's motorised canoe ~2 hours upstream into Tambopata National Reserve — the boat ride itself is the wildlife show (capybaras on the banks, caiman, kingfishers, macaws overhead). Check into a fan-cooled jungle lodge room (Wasaí Tambopata, Refugio Amazonas-budget alternatives, or EcoAmazonia). Pay your reserve entrance fee (~US$40 / £32) at the checkpoint. After dark, join the lodge's included night walk — guide-led groups leave together, so ask to be added to the evening departure on arrival.

🚌Taxi airport→port & shared lodge motorboat (~2 hrs); reserve entrance fee ~£32

Day 2

Dawn at the El Chuncho macaw clay lick

Tambopata National Reserve – El Chuncho

Up before dawn for the boat ride ~60 minutes upstream to the Macaw Clay Lick at El Chuncho. Most lodges include this as a shared guided excursion if you book a package; if you're piecing it together independently, ask the lodge or a Puerto Maldonado operator (e.g. local agencies along the main plaza) to slot you into a group departure — it's far cheaper than a private charter. You'll watch from a riverside hide as flocks of red-and-green macaws, parrots and parakeets descend to eat mineral-rich clay — one of the Amazon's great spectacles. Back at the lodge for a late lunch. In the afternoon, join the 1 km ethnobotanical trail walk with a guide, then laze in a hammock, swim in the Tambopata River, or pay a few soles to borrow a fishing rod (the river has 250+ species). After dinner, a spotlight caiman search by boat.

Day 3

Sandoval Lake: hike, canoe and giant otters

Tambopata → Sandoval Lake → Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast, boat back to Puerto Maldonado and store your main bag at the hotel or a left-luggage spot. Take a public/shared taxi or local bus toward the Sandoval Lake trailhead on the Madre de Dios (~S/30-40 each way, or ~20 minutes by taxi then a short boat crossing). Pay the Sandoval Lake community entrance fee (~S/30-40) at the control post, then hike the 3 km muddy trail in — bring proper shoes. At the lake, hire a local canoe or paddle with a boatman (small fee per person, negotiable) to glide among hoatzins, herons, kingfishers and, with luck, a family of giant otters. Many travellers choose to overnight at a basic lake lodge instead of returning; if not, head back to town by late afternoon and check into a cheap hotel near the plaza (e.g. Hostal Puerto Maldonado, Hospedaje Yupanky — ~£15-20). Dinner in town at a local menu restaurant, and optional night out along the main strip.

Day 4

Puerto Maldonado & onward flight

Puerto Maldonado

Slow morning: browse the Mercado Central for jungle fruit and breakfast, walk the riverside mirador at the confluence of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios, or visit the Obelisk viewpoint. Grab a cheap taxi to the airport (~S/15-20 / £3-4) for a midday or early-afternoon flight out (the operator advises landings 8-11am and departures from noon onward, which is good advice regardless of how you book). Tip your lodge guides if you joined shared excursions — a few pounds per day is normal.

🚌Taxi to Puerto Maldonado airport (~£4)

🛏—

  • →Taxi to airport
  • →Onward flight to Lima or Cusco

Frequently asked questions

How much does Tambopata Self-Launched: Macaw Clay Lick & Sandoval Lake 4D/3N cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £310 per person for 4 days in Tambopata National Reserve, Peru. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with CondeTravel?+

Yes — CondeTravel charges around £680 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £310 — a saving of roughly £370 (54%) per person.

How long is the Tambopata National Reserve, Peru trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Tambopata National Reserve, Peru.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a wildlife, adventure, backpacker trip through Tambopata National Reserve, Peru, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
