A self-launched, solo-friendly island-hopping week following the Stockholm Archipelago Trail from Svartsö in the north to Landsort at the southern tip. You'll walk six sections of Sweden's newest long-distance trail, ride the same public ferries and taxi boats the guided groups use, row yourself across the Båtklubbsleden sound between Ingmarsö and Finnhamn, wild swim off granite slabs, and book your own wood-fired sauna on Utö. All accommodation is in the same characterful archipelago hostels used by the commercial tour, but booked directly; meals are self-catered from island shops plus bakery and restaurant stops. Prices are approximate backpacker rates and exclude flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Stockholm to Svartsö – first island footsteps

Stockholm / Svartsö

Fly into Arlanda and take the Flygbussarna coach to Stockholm City Terminal (~129 SEK / £10, 45 mins) rather than the pricey Arlanda Express. Store bags at Central Station lockers (~70-90 SEK) if you're early, wander Gamla Stan, then catch the afternoon Waxholmsbolaget archipelago ferry from Strömkajen out to Svartsö (~2.5 hrs, 100-150 SEK with a SL/Waxholm travel card). Book tickets on the Waxholmsbolaget site or app a few days ahead – summer sailings fill. From the Svartsö jetty it's a flat 4 km walk to the beachfront Svartsö hostel (book direct via their site or Hostelworld, ~£30-35 for a shared room). Swim off the jetty, self-cater dinner from the island shop, and use the lakeside sauna if it's open.

Day 2

Svartsö to Finnhamn – gravel lanes, meadows and the rowing crossing

Svartsö / Ingmarsö / Finnhamn

Self-navigate the Svartsö section of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail (11 miles, ~5-6 hrs) on waymarked gravel lanes and through grazed meadows past waterside boathouses – download the trail GPX from the official Stockholm Archipelago Trail site. Short public ferry hop to Ingmarsö, then forest paths to the Båtklubbsleden: two rowing boats moored on opposite banks of a narrow sound. Row yourself across (400 m) and leave the boat for the next hiker – entirely free and open to anyone. Continue to Finnhamn hostel, the yellow 1915 timber landmark in the nature reserve (book direct, ~£25-30 shared). Cook dinner in the guest kitchen; the rooftop bar is a good sundowner spot.

Walk the granite-slab trails of the new Nämdöskärgården marine national park, visit the visitor centre and take a wild swim in one of the sheltered coves. Another taxi boat run to Utö (~£25-30). Check into Utö Vandrarhem for three nights (book direct, ~£30-35 shared) so you can settle in and unpack properly.

Day 4

The wild heart of Utö – big trail day

Utö

The toughest day of the week: 10 miles and ~6-7 hours on the eastern Utö section, mixing open gravel roads, reed-fringed boardwalks and a rugged, rocky coastal path exposed to the open sea. Self-navigate with the trail GPX and turn back to the hostel, or shortcut via the road if conditions turn. Explore the 700-year-old mining village of Gruvbyn with its water-filled shafts, then treat yourself to a cinnamon bun and dinner at Utö Värdshus or the village bakery (budget ~200-400 SEK). This is one of the best bits of the whole trail.

Ålö wilderness, Storsand beach and a wood-fired sauna

Utö / Ålö

Take the local bus or walk the bridge across to Ålö for the wildest section of the trail: pine forest, cliffs plunging into the Baltic and the white sands of Storsand beach – the best wild swim of the trip. Hike 8 miles back to Utö. In the evening hire the wood-fired sauna and hot tub at Utö (book direct with the hostel or Utö Havsbad, ~£20-25 per person shared between a few of you) and alternate heat with cold dips in the sea a few steps away. Dinner at the bakery or a hostel-cooked meal.

Check into the Landsort hostel – simple Scandinavian houses near the lighthouse (book direct or via Hostelworld, ~£35 shared). Hike the Landsort section from one end of Öja to the other (7 miles): forest singletrack, rugged capes, a detour to the Cold War Ersta Battery and the 1689 Landsort lighthouse, Sweden's oldest active one. Celebrate with a farewell dinner at the village restaurant, or cook at the hostel.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched: Hike and Wild Swim the Stockholm Archipelago cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £700 per person for 7 days in Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £2,410 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £700 — a saving of roughly £1,710 (71%) per person.

How long is the Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a hiking, adventure, slow-travel trip through Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
