Sri Lanka Itinerary 12 Days — Self-Launched Version

Clear immigration at Bandaranaike International Airport, buy a local SIM at the arrivals hall (Dialog/Mobitel, ~£3-8 for data), then take an airport taxi or the Highway Bus toward Dambulla/Habarana and change onto a local bus to Polonnaruwa (total 4-5 hours). This is a long transfer day — the equivalent of the operator's Day 1 — so don't over-plan it. Check into a guesthouse near the old town, then rent a bicycle or tuk-tuk for the afternoon to explore the ancient city. Buy your ticket at the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum and wander Parakrama Samudraya reservoir at sunset.

Morning local bus to Dambulla (~2 hours). Drop bags at your guesthouse and walk up to the Dambulla Cave Temple (Golden Temple) — five painted cave shrines with around 150 Buddha statues. Entry is around £7 for foreigners. In the afternoon do a self-guided Sri Lankan village walk to the surrounding paddy fields, or hire a tuk-tuk to Sigiriya if you'd rather cover the rock a day early. Get to Sigiriya early — the rock opens around 6.30am and the heat and crowds build fast. Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress (foreigner entry ~£25-30) past the water gardens, the mirror wall and the frescoes up to the Lion's Paw and the summit palace ruins. Afterwards loop the Ancient City area and the surrounding archaeological park on foot or by bike. This is a big day of steps, so carry water and go slow. Base in Dambulla or Sigiriya village, whichever you booked.

Bus south toward Kandy, breaking the journey at Matale to visit a spice garden (~£5 with guided tour and tasting). Continue to Kandy by bus (~3-4 hours total). In the afternoon walk Kandy Lake and the Upper Lake Drive, browse the gem and batik shops, and — if you want the equivalent of the operator's included massage — book a head/shoulder/feet herbal massage at a local ayurvedic spa (~£8-12).

Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), dressing modestly — shoulders and knees covered. Entry is around £7-8. Catch one of the daily puja ceremonies for drums and the opening of the inner shrine. In the evening see a Kandyan cultural dance performance (self-bookable, ~£8-12), often bundled with a fire-walking finale. Wander the Kandy market and the lakeside afterwards.

This is the day to do the famous hill-country rail journey. Take the morning train from Kandy toward Nanu Oya (the station for Nuwara Eliya) — reserved 2nd class is around £2-4 and the scenery through tea estates is the point. From Nanu Oya take a tuk-tuk or local bus up to Nuwara Eliya (~£3-5). En route stop at a working tea plantation and factory for a tour and tasting (~£5-8; Damro/Labookellie and the smaller estate factories along the road are both options). Walk to a hill-country waterfall, then do a Nuwara Eliya city orientation and a strawberry farm visit.

A gentle day at 'Little England'. Visit Hakgala Botanical Gardens (~£4) and, if the weather is clear, walk or tuk-tuk up toward Mount Pedro (Pidurutalagala) viewpoints. Optional boat ride on Gregory's Lake (~£2-4). Book an optional boat trip or just linger over tea and scones in a colonial-era café. This is your buffer day — use it to catch up on laundry, plan the Yala leg, or rest before the safari.

Drop bags and arrange an afternoon or early-evening 4x4 jeep safari into Yala National Park — self-book through your guesthouse or an operator in Tissa, averaging £25-40 per person for a shared jeep including park entry. Leopards, elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles are the draw. If requested, stop at the Katharagama Hindu Temple on the way, especially for the evening ceremony.

Travel west along the coast — bus to Galle via Matara (~3-4 hours). Spend a half-day walking Galle Fort: the ramparts, the lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church and the boutique lanes inside the walls. Then see the stilt fishermen on the coast road (a genuine photo stop; be respectful and tip if posing) before continuing to Bentota by bus or train (~1.5-2 hours). Unawatuna Beach is a short detour if you want a swim en route.

A free day on the south coast. Swim at Bentota Beach, walk the estuary, and pick from the optional water sports — jet ski, banana boat, wakeboarding, or a calm boat ride on the Madu River through mangroves (~£10-30 depending on activity). Book these directly on the beach or through your guesthouse; agree the price before you get on the water.

Head north along the coast, stopping at the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery (~£3-5) where rescued hatchlings are released — check the ethics of the hatchery you visit and prefer those that release on the beach. Continue to Colombo by train or bus (~2 hours) and check in. In the afternoon do a self-guided Colombo city walk: Galle Face Green, Pettah market, the Gangaramaya Temple and the Fort district. Plenty of good restaurants for a final dinner.

Buffer morning in Colombo — last-minute shopping, a coffee, or a lazy walk by the sea. Leave well ahead for Bandaranaike International Airport (allow 2 hours in traffic: bus ~£1-2 or airport taxi/shared shuttle ~£8-15). If your flight is late, you can store bags at the guesthouse and take a short tuk-tuk loop of the Fort area. Check in and fly out. This closes the same loop the guided tour ran, but on your own schedule.
