Day 1

Arrival in Colombo & Transfer to Negombo

Negombo

Fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), which sits just 8km from Negombo — one of the easiest airport arrivals in Asia. Skip the expensive private transfer and jump in a metered taxi or pre-book an Uber/PickMe (Sri Lanka's local ride-hailing app) for around £5-8 to your guesthouse in Negombo. Check in, freshen up, and head out to the Negombo beachfront strip for a casual welcome dinner at one of the many open-air seafood restaurants. Try the grilled prawns and a Lion lager — you've earned it.

Arrive in Sigiriya by early evening, check in, and relax by the pool if your guesthouse has one.

The train winds through misty mountain passes, emerald tea estates and cascading waterfalls over approximately 6 hours. Check the Ella train timetable the evening before. A tuk-tuk from Ella town is around £2 return. Afterwards, make your way south toward Udawalawe National Park — the gateway to Sri Lanka's best wildlife safari. The journey takes around 3-4 hours by local bus and tuk-tuk. Surf Lesson in Weligama & Coconut Tree Hill, Mirissa

Weligama Bay is one of the best beginner surf spots in Asia — shallow, warm water and long, gentle waves make it ideal for first-timers. Book a 2-hour surf lesson with a local school on the beach (book via GetYourGuide or walk-in at any of the many surf schools on Weligama beach, ~£15-25 including board hire). After your lesson, travel the short distance east to Mirissa — Sri Lanka's famous beach town and your home for the final two nights. Many temples welcome respectful visitors — dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) and bring a small donation. Ask your guesthouse host to recommend the nearest active monastery. The afternoon is free to enjoy the beach or explore Mirissa's colourful café and restaurant scene. Alternatively, if you're not flying today, why not stay on in Mirissa for an extra day or two? The beach here has a well-deserved reputation for being hard to leave.
