Spain, Portugal & Morocco Adventure — Self-Launched

15 days · Spain, Portugal & Morocco

G Adventures charges £2,060

£880saved per person (43%)

No-markup version: ~£1,180 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 15-day Classic route from Madrid to Marrakech, following the Moorish trail through Iberia and into northern Morocco. You'll ride Spain and Portugal's excellent public trains and buses instead of a group coach, sleep in hostels and family-run pensions instead of tour hotels, and book the same headline experiences — Évora's Chapel of Bones, a Fado night in Lisbon, flamenco in Seville, the blue lanes of Chefchaouen, the Fès medina, and the Roman ruins of Volubilis — directly or through GetYourGuide/Klook. Ideal for solo travellers who want the same route and rhythm at roughly a third of the price, with the freedom to linger, detour to Sintra, or add a night somewhere. The pace is fast — expect several long travel days — and costs below are realistic backpacker/mid-budget estimates in GBP, excluding international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Madrid — tapas and the art triangle

Madrid, Spain

Land at Barajas (MAD) and take Metro Line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios (~£4.50) or the 203 bus to Atocha (~£4.50) — skip the €30 taxi. Check into a hostel around Sol/La Latina or Malasaña. Spend the afternoon on a free self-guided wander: Plaza Mayor, Gran Vía and the Retiro. Book Prado tickets online in advance (~£13) if you want to beat the queue, or use the free evening entry slot (Mon–Sat 18:00–20:00, Sun 17:00–19:00). Dinner is a tapas crawl in La Latina — bar-hopping with a caña and a plate at each stop is cheaper and more fun than one sit-down meal (~£15–20).

Back in Lisbon for the afternoon: Belém Tower and Pastéis de Belém (~£1.30 a custard tart). In the evening book a small Fado house in Alfama or Mouraria direct or via GetYourGuide — the touristy dinner shows run £40+, but a entry-plus-drink fado bar is ~£15–20 with a simple petiscos dinner (~£12).

Add the cathedral and Giralda (~£8). Lunch on tapas in Santa Cruz (~£12). For the evening flamenco, skip the group show and book a small tablao directly — Casa de la Memoria or La Carbonería (free entry bar with flamenco) — tickets ~£18–25.

Afternoon: hire a licensed local guide for the Fès medina (~£25–35 for 3–4 hrs, split with others found on hostel boards or booked through GetYourGuide/Klook) — the 9,000 lanes are genuinely impossible alone. Frequently asked questions

How much does Spain, Portugal & Morocco Adventure — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,180 per person for 15 days in Spain, Portugal & Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,060 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,180 — a saving of roughly £880 (43%) per person.

How long is the Spain, Portugal & Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 15 days, covering 15 day-by-day stops through Spain, Portugal & Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, foodie, budget trip through Spain, Portugal & Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
