Trafalgar charges £3,050

£1,705saved per person (56%)

No-markup version: ~£1,345 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched, solo-friendly version of Trafalgar's 16-day Madrid-to-Madrid coach tour through Spain, Morocco and Portugal. You cover the same headline sights — Madrid's Royal Palace, Toledo's old town, Granada's Alhambra, the Costa del Sol, Fes and Marrakesh medinas, Casablanca's Hassan II Mosque, Rabat, Tangier, Seville, Évora and Lisbon — but you build it yourself with hostels and guesthouses, public buses and trains, the Gibraltar ferries, and self-booked guided day tours from GetYourGuide or direct with the monuments. Expect a fraction of the coach price, more freedom, and a proper taste of each country.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Madrid

Madrid, Spain

Land at Madrid-Barajas and take the Metro Line 8 + Line 10 into the centre (~€5, about 40 mins) or the Airport Express bus (~€5). Check into a hostel or budget hotel around Sol, La Latina or Malasaña. Ease in with a self-guided evening walk past the Cibeles Fountain, down the Paseo del Prado, and grab dinner — a menú del día or tapas at a stand-up bar in La Latina for £10-15.

Madrid, Spain

Book the Royal Palace and the Prado online ahead of time (Prado is free 6-8pm Mon-Sat and 5-7pm Sunday; Royal Palace ~€14 or free on certain weekday late slots for EU citizens). Do a free walking tour with a tip (~£8-10) for the Cibeles fountain and Paseo de la Castellana orientation, then spend the afternoon in El Retiro Park and the Golden Triangle of Art. Optional side-trip: AVE train or bus to Segovia is doable but long — if you want it, save a full day; otherwise stay in Madrid.

  • →Royal Palace entry ~£12
  • →Prado Museum (free window or ~£13)

Madrid to Toledo by train, then on toward Granada

Toledo & Granada, Spain

Take the early Avant train from Madrid Atocha to Toledo (~35 mins, ~€13 one-way). Drop bags at the station lockers or a café. Wander the old town, visit the Church of Santo Tomé (El Greco's 'Burial of the Count of Orgaz', ~€4) and the Santa María la Blanca Synagogue (~€4). Watch a damascene steel workshop demonstration — many in Toledo offer free demos with pieces for sale. Mid-late afternoon take the train back to Madrid and connect onward to Granada — either the direct regional train (~4.5 hrs) arriving evening, or overnight in Madrid and travel early Day 4. Most travellers do the latter.

🛏Budget guesthouse/hostel in Madrid or Granada (dorm £18-25)

The Alhambra is the single most important pre-book on this trip — tickets (~€19) sell out weeks ahead; book on the official alhambra-patronato.es site or via GetYourGuide with a guide (~£30-40 for a 3-hour tour). Give yourself the full morning or afternoon there (palaces are timed-entry). Afterwards explore the Albaicín quarter and Mirador de San Nicolás for sunset, with a free tapas crawl in the evening (Granada's tapas culture is famously cheap).

Málaga itself is cheaper and far more interesting — the Alcazaba, Picasso Museum and beach are all walkable. Spend the afternoon on the sand, swim, and eat a cheap chiringuito lunch of pescaíto frito. Save a relaxed evening.

You'll see the tanneries, madrasas, carpet cooperatives and the Royal Palace gates. Skip pre-agreed 'shopping stops' if you're not interested — a good guide will drop them. Frequently asked questions

How much does Spain, Morocco & Portugal: Self-Launched 16-Day Route (Madrid Loop) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,345 per person for 16 days in Spain, Morocco & Portugal. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Trafalgar?+

Yes — Trafalgar charges around £3,050 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,345 — a saving of roughly £1,705 (56%) per person.

How long is the Spain, Morocco & Portugal trip?+

This itinerary runs 16 days, covering 16 day-by-day stops through Spain, Morocco & Portugal.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, foodie, city-breaks trip through Spain, Morocco & Portugal, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
