Spain Upgraded — Self-Launched

8 days · Spain (Madrid, Toledo, Córdoba, Granada, Seville)

G Adventures charges £1,450

£840saved per person (58%)

No-markup version: ~£610 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An independent, self-launched version of G Adventures' 8-day "Spain Upgraded" route from Madrid to Seville — same five cities, same UNESCO highlights (Toledo, the Mezquita, the Alhambra, Seville's Alcázar), but booked direct and travelled by Spain's excellent public trains and buses. You'll stay in central hostels and family-run pensiones instead of tour hotels, join pay-as-you-go walking tours and a public flamenco class in Granada, and keep total costs at roughly a third of the tour price. Madrid → Toledo (day trip) → Córdoba → Granada → Seville. All figures are approximate backpacker/budget-traveller estimates in GBP and assume a solo traveller sharing a dorm or twin.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Madrid — Puerta del Sol & Plaza Mayor at dusk

Madrid

Land at Barajas (MAD) and get into the centre the cheap way: Metro Line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios, change to Line 10 / Line 6 to Ópera or Sol (~€4.50-5, about 45 mins), or the 24-hour Airport Express bus to Atocha/Cibeles for €5. Check into a hostel dorm around Sol/La Latina (Generator Madrid, The Hat, or a small pensión near Plaza Mayor, ~£20-30/night). Day 1 is a soft landing: wander down Calle de Alcalá to Puerta del Sol, loop Plaza Mayor, and eat a late plate of patatas bravas and vermut in La Latina. Free evening — no welcome meeting required.

Toledo day trip + Prado in the evening

Madrid / Toledo

Take the Avant high-speed train from Madrid Atocha to Toledo (25 mins, ~€11-14 each way; book on renfe.com or Trainline a few days ahead). Toledo is a UNESCO-listed walled city above the Tagus — walk the Alcázar exteriors, the Cathedral, the two medieval synagogues (Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito) and the Judería lanes. A pay-what-you-want free walking tour (GuruWalk / Sandemans) gives you the historical context a tour leader would. Head back to Madrid mid-afternoon; pre-book the Museo del Prado for a late slot (~€15, cheaper free hours 6-8pm but long queues). Evening free in Huertas.

Check into a guesthouse in the Judería or near the Mezquita (~£20-25). Spend the afternoon in the Mezquita-Catedral (~€13, book a slot online) and its forest of arches, then lose yourself in the old Jewish quarter's whitewashed lanes and the Roman bridge at sunset. Eat local: salmorejo, ajo blanco and rabo de toro. Optional evening at a rooftop bar looking at the Mezquita.

Do a self-guided orientation of the city: Granada Cathedral and Royal Chapel exteriors, the Alcaicería bazaar, then climb into the Albaicín for the classic Mirador de San Nicolás view of the Alhambra. In the evening, book a small public flamenco class in the Sacromonte or Realejo (many schools and tablaos offer 1-hour beginner lessons, ~€15-25) — then test your moves at a cave-zambra flamenco show (~€20-30) and late tapas in the Realejo, where a drink still usually comes with a free tapa.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Spain Upgraded — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £610 per person for 8 days in Spain (Madrid, Toledo, Córdoba, Granada, Seville). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,450 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £610 — a saving of roughly £840 (58%) per person.

How long is the Spain (Madrid, Toledo, Córdoba, Granada, Seville) trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Spain (Madrid, Toledo, Córdoba, Granada, Seville).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, city-breaks, foodie trip through Spain (Madrid, Toledo, Córdoba, Granada, Seville), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
