An independent, budget-friendly version of G Adventures' 8-day "Explore Southern Thailand" loop — Bangkok to Bangkok via Ko Samui, Khao Sok National Park and Krabi. You'll fly south to the Gulf islands, sleep in a riverside jungle resort under limestone cliffs, do a night jungle walk and campfire-style dinner, boat through the mangroves of the Krabi River, tuk-tuk around Ko Klang island villages, and longtail out to the Hong Islands. Everything is bookable directly, by local bus/train/ferry, or via GetYourGuide and Klook — same route, roughly a quarter of the price. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget-traveller estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Bangkok
Land at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang and take the Airport Rail Link into the city (~60 THB / £1.50) or a Grab from ~350 THB (£8). Base yourself in Banglamphu near Khao San Road or along the riverside. Complete your Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 3 days of arrival — required for all arrivals since May 2025. Spend the evening eating street food and swapping notes with other travellers at your hostel.

Cheapest is a low-cost flight to Surat Thani (AirAsia/Nok Air from ~£25-40) plus the Seatran or Raja Ferry and minivan across to Ko Samui (~£10, about 4-5 hrs total). Straight flights to Samui (Bangkok Airways) are convenient but pricey (~£70-110), so book early and compare. Settle into a beach bungalow on Lamai or Chaweng Noi, then swim and relax.

Free day. Either rent a scooter (~250-300 THB / £6-7 plus fuel) and loop the island — Big Buddha, Na Muang waterfalls, Hin Ta Hin Yai rocks — or book a day trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park through Klook or any Lamai/Chaweng agent (~1,200-1,600 THB / £28-37, including lunch and snorkelling). Independent travellers can also join a shared speedboat group rather than a private charter.

Ko Samui to Khao Sok via community farm
Khao Sok
Ferry back to the mainland (Don Sak) and continue by minivan/bus towards Ban Ta Khun and Khao Sok (~£12-15 combined, roughly 4-5 hrs). Break the journey at a community farm near Ban Ta Khun — several family-run fruit orchards and rubber plantations along Route 401 offer farm tours and lunch for a few hundred baht; ask your Khao Sok guesthouse to arrange a stop or short farm visit. Then check into a riverside resort tucked beneath the limestone cliffs. In the evening join a guided night jungle walk (bookable through your resort, ~500-700 THB / £12-16) and finish with a campfire-style riverside dinner.

Khao Sok National Park — jungle & lake day
Khao Sok
Full day in southern Thailand's largest virgin rainforest. Options: hike the park trails from the visitor centre with a local guide (~£15-20, look for monkeys, hornbills and gibbons), canoe the Sok River (~£12-15 per person on a shared inflatable), or take a day trip to Chiew Lan Lake for the classic karst-cliff boat scenery (~£30-40 including longtail and lunch, bookable through any Khao Sok guesthouse). Carry water, insect repellent and cash — ATMs are limited.
🚌Walking / songthaew to park entrance ~£2
🛏Riverside jungle resort, £14-22

Khao Sok to Krabi — mangroves, cave & Ko Klang villages
Krabi
Minivan south to Krabi (~£10-13, about 2.5-3 hrs). In the afternoon hire a longtail boat from Krabi Town pier to Khao Khanap Nam (~600-900 THB / £14-20 for the boat, splittable with others at the pier) — you'll glide past mangroves and climb into the cave to see the prehistoric paintings. Then take the local ferry across to Ko Klang island and hire a motorised tricycle tuk-tuk (~£8-10/hr) to visit rice fields, a rubber plantation and a batik workshop. This is exactly the kind of trip you can negotiate directly on the island rather than through an operator.
🚌Minivan Khao Sok–Krabi ~£12 + longtail and island ferry ~£10 shared
🛏Guesthouse or budget hotel in Krabi Town / Ao Nang, £12-20
- →Longtail boat through Krabi mangroves

Hong Islands longtail day trip
Krabi
Book a shared longtail boat tour of the Hong Islands through Klook, GetYourGuide or any Ao Nang travel agent — roughly 1,100-1,500 THB (£25-35) including hotel pickup, lunch, snorkelling gear and stops at Hong Beach, the Hong Lagoon, Phak Bia and Lading Island. Early departures (7:30-8:00) beat the crowds. Optional evening Thai massage in Ao Nang (~300 THB / £7).

Krabi back to Bangkok — trip ends
Bangkok
Return to Bangkok by the cheapest route: overnight or morning bus from Krabi (~£18-22, 11-12 hrs) or, better for an 8-day loop, a budget flight Krabi–Don Mueang (~£30-45 booked in advance). If flying, aim for an afternoon departure from Bangkok no earlier than 15:00 to allow connection time. Add a Bangkok night if you'd rather not rush.
🚌Flight Krabi–Bangkok ~£35 (or sleeper bus ~£20)
🛏Optional final night in Bangkok hostel, £10-16
- →Morning transfer to Krabi airport
- →Flight back to Bangkok for onward travel

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched Southern Thailand: Bangkok, Ko Samui, Khao Sok & Krabi cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £447 per person for 8 days in Southern Thailand. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,520 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £447 — a saving of roughly £1,073 (71%) per person.
How long is the Southern Thailand trip?+
This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Southern Thailand.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, beaches, backpacker trip through Southern Thailand, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
