A self-launched version of the classic 8-day Bedouin-guided expedition into the South Sinai wilderness. You'll base yourself at a relaxed Sharm El Sheikh beach hotel, then arrange your own local Bedouin guide and camel support (or join a small group through a Bedouin-run outfit in Dahab/St Catherine) to trek the wadis and gorges of the interior, summit Jebel Um Shomer (8,490 ft), sleep under the Milky Way, share a night with a local family, and finish at the palm-fringed Ein Kidd oasis. Today's trek is all about Wadi Rimhan — at times a steep ravine, at others a gentler path, ascending from Aqsuraya to the base of Um Shomer. This wadi catches runoff from most of Um Shomer, so it's as lush as the desert gets, with Tarfa trees and grasses for the camels. Stop for lunch in Zalaga and reach Crum Nassir in the late afternoon — an old Bedouin stone house and garden that becomes your base for the next two nights. Help set up camp and cook dinner over the fire.
