A self-launched 8-day route through Kerala and Tamil Nadu's greatest hits — Kochi's colonial lanes and Kathakali theatre, the tea hills of Munnar, the temple city of Madurai, wildlife and spice country at Periyar, and a night on an Alleppey houseboat. Where the original runs a private car and driver throughout, this version uses Kerala's excellent and cheap bus and train network, with short shared auto-rickshaw hops on arrival. All costs are rough per-person estimates in GBP based on budget guesthouse and hostel rates.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Kochi — Fort Kochi on foot

Kochi

Land at Cochin International and take the airport shuttle bus or a prepaid auto to Fort Kochi (about £1-3). Check into a guesthouse in Fort Kochi or Mattancherry. Spend the afternoon self-walking the heritage circuit: Chinese fishing nets at sunset, St Francis Church, Santa Cruz Basilica and the Dutch Palace (Mattancherry, closed Fridays, ~£1 entry). In the evening book a Kathakali performance through Klook or directly at the Kerala Kathakali Centre (~£6-10) — arrive early to watch the make-up being applied.

  • →Kathakali performance (book via Klook or direct)

Day 2

Kochi to Munnar via the Western Ghats

Munnar

Take a morning KSRTC bus from Ernakulam (Kochi) to Munnar — roughly 4-5 hours through tea estates and waterfalls, around £2-3. Alternatively a shared taxi (~£10-15pp) if you want to stop for photos. Check into a guesthouse in Munnar town or Chinnakanal. Afternoon is free: wander the tea fields on foot, or take a local auto to a nearby viewpoint. Ask your guesthouse about a half-day jeep tour for tomorrow.

🛏Munnar guesthouse or homestay, £10-16

Day 3

Munnar tea country & Eravikulam National Park

Munnar

Book Eravikulam National Park entry online in advance (it sells out in season; ~£2-3 entry plus ~£3 for the park shuttle). Go early — Nilgiri tahr are most active before the mist rolls in. In the afternoon hire an auto or join a shared jeep to Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point (~£5-8pp), or do a tea factory tour at KDHP Museum (~£2). Skip the private car — local autos and shared jeeps run the same loop for a fraction.

🚌Local auto-rickshaw or shared jeep for the Mattupetty loop, ~£5-8

🛏Munnar guesthouse or homestay, £10-16

  • →Eravikulam National Park (pre-book entry)
  • →Mattupetty Dam & Echo Point
  • →Tea factory/museum tour

Day 4

Munnar to Madurai — temple city

Madurai

Long travel day. Take the morning bus Munnar to Theni (~2 hrs, ~£1) then connect to a bus or train onward to Madurai (~2-3 hrs, ~£1-2). Alternatively book a shared taxi straight through (~£15-20pp). Check into a guesthouse near the temple. Late afternoon visit Meenakshi Amman Temple — free entry, phones/cameras left at the gate — and stay for the evening 'putting the god to bed' ceremony. Walk to Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace (~£1) and the Gandhi Memorial Museum (free) if time allows.

🚌Bus Munnar–Theni–Madurai ~£2-3 total; or shared taxi ~£15-20

Settle into a homestay among the cardamom estates. Evening walk around the spice gardens — a self-booked plantation tour is ~£3-5 and easily arranged through your homestay.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary — bamboo rafting & hike

Thekkady (Periyar)

Book the KTDC Periyar Tiger Reserve bamboo rafting + border hiking package directly on the KTDC website or at the boat landing (roughly £20-25, includes permit, guide and breakfast — it books out, so reserve a week ahead). The full-day version starts at dawn and combines a trek with a slow raft on the lake. Boat safaris on Periyar Lake are a cheaper alternative at ~£2-3. Elephant rides are no longer offered — and are best avoided ethically anyway; the bamboo rafting gives far better wildlife odds.

🚌Walk or short auto to the boat landing, ~£1

🛏Thekkady homestay or guesthouse, £10-16

  • →Bamboo rafting + border hiking (book via KTDC)
  • →Periyar Lake boat safari

Board a pre-booked standard houseboat for an overnight backwater cruise — book via Klook, Booking.com or directly with a KCA-registered operator; shared/group boats run about £25-35pp including all meals, private boats more. The boat cruises the Punnamada and Vembanad backwaters, stops at a village for toddy and coconut, and moors overnight. Dinner on board.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Amazing South India: Kochi to Alleppey Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £272 per person for 8 days in South India (Kerala & Tamil Nadu). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Holidays At?+

Yes — Holidays At charges around £845 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £272 — a saving of roughly £573 (68%) per person.

How long is the South India (Kerala & Tamil Nadu) trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through South India (Kerala & Tamil Nadu).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, hiking trip through South India (Kerala & Tamil Nadu), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
