An 8-day DIY version of G Adventures' "Kruger in Depth" loop from Johannesburg: a welcome braai in Joburg, then the Greater Kruger Area and Kruger National Park for sunrise, sunset and full-day safaris (plus a cheaper 4x4 option), a free day on the Panorama Route, and a stop at Jane Goodall's Chimp Eden before heading back. You'll use the Baz Bus/Intercape or a shuttle for the long Joburg–Kruger leg, base yourself in a Hazyview or Marloth Park backpackers/lodge, and book Kruger day drives directly through SANParks or small local operators — saving roughly £700–£900 versus the group tour. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget-traveller estimates; December is peak season in Kruger so accommodation and park drives can cost more.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Johannesburg — braai night in Maboneng

Johannesburg

Land at O.R. Tambo and take the Gautrain or a metered Uber/taxi (~£10-14) into the city or to a hostel in Maboneng/Braamfontein. Check into a hostel dorm (Curiocity or similar), rest up, then join a hostel braai or a nearby shisa nyama for a proper South African barbecue — the self-launched stand-in for the group welcome dinner. Pick up a local SIM (Vodacom/MTN ~£5-8) and cash from an ATM.

🚌Gautrain + Uber from O.R. Tambo (~£12)

🛏Hostel dorm, Maboneng/Braamfontein (~£15)

  • →Hostel braai / shisa nyama dinner
  • →Buy local SIM and stock up on groceries
~£42
Day 2

Johannesburg to Greater Kruger Area

Hazyview / Marloth Park

Long travel day made easy without a group vehicle. Book the Baz Bus or an Intercape/Greyhound coach, or a shared shuttle from Joburg to Nelspruit/Hazyview (roughly 5-6 hours, £20-30 one way). Stop for lunch in Nelspruit or grab padkos (road snacks) en route. Arrive late afternoon, check into a backpackers lodge just outside Kruger's southern gates (Hazyview or Marloth Park) and stock up on self-catering supplies — most budget lodges have braai areas.

🚌Baz Bus / Intercape coach or shared shuttle Joburg–Hazyview (~£25)

🛏Backpackers lodge near Kruger south gate (~£20)

  • →Scenic drive through Mpumalanga
  • →Self-catered braai at the lodge

Day 3

Sunrise safari and sunset drive

Kruger National Park area

Up before dawn for a morning game drive — book a SANParks guided sunrise drive or a local operator's open-vehicle drive from Hazyview (approx £30-40 for a 3-hour drive). Return for a late breakfast and a lazy afternoon by the pool. In the late afternoon head out on a second drive or a SANParks sunset/night drive (approx £25-35), which is when predators get active. Finish with your own braai back at the lodge.

🚌Operator pickup from lodge (included in drive price)

🛏Backpackers lodge near Kruger south gate (~£20)

  • →Sunrise game drive (SANParks or local operator)
  • →Afternoon rest / pool
  • →Sunset safari drive
  • →Braai dinner

Day 4

Full day self-drive or guided safari in Kruger

Kruger National Park

The big one. Two options: hire a compact car in Hazyview (from ~£30-40/day plus fuel ~£12, split between travellers) and self-drive Kruger's tarred southern circuit — Skukuza, Lower Sabie and the Sabie River road are classic Big Five territory — or join a full-day guided open-vehicle safari (~£65-85). Take a picnic lunch, plenty of water and binoculars. Gates close at sunset, so plan your exit. Dinner back at the lodge.

🚌Self-drive car hire + fuel (~£25 pp) or guided safari

🛏Backpackers lodge near Kruger south gate (~£20)

  • →Full-day Kruger National Park safari (self-drive or guided)
  • →Picnic lunch at a rest camp

Day 5

4x4 safari drive — a different angle on the bush

Kruger National Park area

Book an open 4x4 safari with a small local operator for a more intimate, slower-paced look at the park (approx £70-90 for a full day, or £35-45 for a half day). Smaller vehicles can take dirt roads and get closer to sightings. Alternatively, book a guided bush walk from a nearby private reserve for a walking-safari experience. Evening braai and a few drinks around the fire with fellow travellers.

🛏Backpackers lodge near Kruger south gate (~£20)

  • →Open 4x4 safari drive (or guided bush walk)
  • →Evening braai
~£100
Day 6

Free day — Panorama Route or another Kruger drive

Blyde River Canyon / Hazyview

Pick your own adventure. Best value is a shared Panorama Route day tour (~£40-55, booked via GetYourGuide, Viator or your lodge) covering God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes and the Blyde River Canyon viewpoints — self-drive hire is also an option if you already have a car. Or spend the day back inside Kruger with a SANParks morning drive (~£30). Either way, top up groceries and have a relaxed evening.

🚌Shared Panorama Route tour or self-drive (~£45)

🛏Backpackers lodge near Kruger south gate (~£20)

  • →Panorama Route day tour (God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, Blyde River Canyon)
  • →Optional extra Kruger morning drive
~£80
Day 7

Chimp Eden and on to Johannesburg

Umhloti Nature Reserve / Johannesburg

Check out early and take a coach or shuttle toward Nelspruit (Mbombela). From there, take a taxi or arrange transport to Jane Goodall Institute Chimp Eden in the Umhloti Nature Reserve for a 1.5-hour guided tour of the rescued-chimpanzee sanctuary (entrance approx £12-15). Afterwards, continue back to Johannesburg by Intercape/Baz Bus or shuttle (~£20-25, 4-5 hours). Check into a Joburg hostel and grab a farewell group dinner at a local restaurant.

🛏Hostel dorm, Johannesburg (~£15)

  • →Jane Goodall Institute Chimp Eden guided tour

Depart Johannesburg

Johannesburg

Depending on your flight time, squeeze in a visit to the Apartheid Museum (~£10) or Constitution Hill before heading to O.R. Tambo via Gautrain or Uber. Trip ends.

  • →Optional Apartheid Museum visit

Frequently asked questions

How much does Kruger in Depth — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £950 per person for 8 days in South Africa. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,130 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £950 — a saving of roughly £180 (16%) per person.

How long is the South Africa trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through South Africa.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through South Africa, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
