SKR Reisen charges £4,220

£2,900saved per person (69%)

No-markup version: ~£1,320 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An independent, self-launched version of SKR Reisen's 18-day Cape Town–to–Garden Route loop: a true in-depth lap of the Western and Eastern Cape covering Stellenbosch and Franschhoek wine country, the Klein Karoo via Route 62, Oudtshoorn's Cango Caves and ostrich farms, the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet and the Valley of Desolation, two safari days in Addo Elephant National Park, the wild coast at Cape St Francis and Tsitsikamma, open-top game drives near Albertinia, Cape Agulhas, whale-watching Hermanus, Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope and Boulders Beach penguins. Instead of a German-speaking guide, private vehicles and 4-star lodges, you'll self-drive or use Baz Bus/intercity shuttles, join small-group day tours booked via GetYourGuide or directly with local operators, and stay in hostels and guesthouses. Costs are rough per-person estimates (shared room, self-catering where possible) — excludes international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Cape Town

Cape Town

Land at Cape Town International (CPT). Take the MyCiTi bus or an Uber (~£12–15) into the City Bowl or Sea Point rather than an airport transfer. Pick up a SIM at the airport, sort out your Rand cash and settle in. Afternoon free to acclimatise — walk the Sea Point promenade or catch sunset from Signal Hill. Note: the original tour day 1–2 includes an overnight flight from Frankfurt; this version assumes you book your own flight into Cape Town.

🚌MyCiTi bus / Uber from CPT (~£12–15)

🛏Hostel or budget guesthouse, City Bowl / Sea Point (~£18–25 p/n dorm or basic double)

  • →Airport transfer into Cape Town
  • →Sea Point promenade walk
  • →Signal Hill sunset
~£55
Day 2

Cape Town to Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch

Pick up a hire car (compact, ~£22–30/day incl. basic insurance if booked early) or take the intercity train/bus to Stellenbosch. Settle into a hostel or guesthouse in town, then do an orientation wander: the oak-lined Dorp Street, the university campus and the VOC Kruithuis. Evening braai or a cheap local dinner — the original's 'welcome dinner' becomes a self-organised hostel dinner.

🚌Hire car pickup + drive (~50 km, ~1 hr) or intercity bus (~£8)

🛏Stellenbosch hostel or guesthouse (~£22–30 p/n)

  • →Collect hire car in Cape Town
  • →Walking orientation of Stellenbosch
  • →Dorp Street and university area
~£70
Day 3

Stellenbosch & Franschhoek wine country

Stellenbosch / Franschhoek

Self-guided wine day: book the Stellenbosch Vine Hopper hop-on-hop-off wine bus (~£22–28) or use the Wine Tram in Franschhoek (~£25–30) — both cheaper and more flexible than a private wine tour. Hit 3–4 estates for tastings (~£4–7 each) plus a cheese/snack platter. Drive or shuttle over the Helshoogte Pass to Franschhoek for the afternoon; the Franschhoek Pass viewpoint is free. Do NOT self-drive if you're tasting — use the hopper.

🚌Wine hopper / Wine Tram (~£22–30)

🛏Stellenbosch hostel or guesthouse (~£22–30 p/n)

  • →Stellenbosch Vine Hopper wine bus
  • →Wine tastings at 3–4 estates
  • →Franschhoek Wine Tram
  • →Helshoogte Pass drive
~£85
Day 4

Route 62 through the Klein Karoo to Montagu

Montagu

Drive Route 62 — the world's longest wine route — east through Robertson and Ashton into the Klein Karoo. Stop at a farm stall (the original's farm visit) for dried fruit, biltong and roosterkoek. Montagu is a small hot-springs town with a lovely avo-and-wine farm nearby; the hot springs are cheap to enter. Note this is a driving day of roughly 200 km.

🚌Self-drive ~200 km (~£15 fuel, split if sharing)

🛏Montagu backpackers or guesthouse (~£20–28 p/n)

  • →Route 62 scenic drive
  • →Farm stall stop in Robertson/Ashton
  • →Montagu hot springs
~£70
Day 5

Montagu to Oudtshoorn — Cango Caves & ostrich farm

Oudtshoorn

Continue east over the Tradouw or R62 through Barrydale and Ladismith into the Little Karoo. In Oudtshoorn, join a standard Cango Caves Heritage Tour (~£9–12, book direct or via GetYourGuide) and then visit one of the ostrich show farms on the R328 (~£8–10) where you can feed birds and, if game, ride one. Stay on a working ostrich farm guesthouse or backpackers and eat ostrich steak for dinner (~£10–14).

🚌Self-drive ~160 km (~£12 fuel)

🛏Oudtshoorn ostrich-farm backpackers or guesthouse (~£20–28 p/n)

  • →Cango Caves Heritage Tour
  • →Ostrich show farm visit
  • →Ostrich steak dinner
~£85
Day 6

Oudtshoorn to Graaff-Reinet via the Valley of Desolation

Graaff-Reinet

Long drive north-east into the Great Karoo (~330 km, ~4 hrs) — top up fuel in Aberdeen. Graaff-Reinet is South Africa's fourth-oldest town with 200+ national monuments; wander Church Street and the Dutch Reformed Church for free. Late afternoon drive into the Camdeboo National Park to the Valley of Desolation (~£8 park fee) for the dolerite pillars at sunset — the highlight of this stretch.

🚌Self-drive ~330 km (~£25 fuel)

🛏Graaff-Reinet backpackers or Karoo guesthouse (~£20–30 p/n)

  • →Camdeboo National Park / Valley of Desolation
  • →Graaff-Reinet historic town walk
~£75
Day 7

Graaff-Reinet to Addo Elephant National Park

Addo

Morning in Graaff-Reinet (Reinet House or the Old Library), then drive south to Addo (~250 km). The original does a guided half-day jeep safari on arrival; instead, self-drive into Addo in your own car (park entry ~£18/day) — the main game area is excellent for self-drive elephant viewing — or book a 2-hour sunset game drive with Addo's own guides (~£30–35). Braai at your accommodation.

🚌Self-drive ~250 km (~£20 fuel)

🛏Addo-area backpackers or safari guesthouse (~£22–32 p/n)

  • →Self-drive game viewing in Addo
  • →Optional SANParks sunset game drive
~£85
Day 8

Full day in Addo Elephant National Park

Addo

Second day in the park. Enter at the main Matyholweni or main camp gate early (best sightings before 10am). Addo has 600+ elephants, plus lion, buffalo and hyena in the northern section. Pack your own lunch and water. If you want a guided experience without the tour price tag, a shared full-day guided game drive from the Addo area can be booked for roughly £55–70 via GetYourGuide or directly with local operators.

🚌Self-drive within the park (~£10 fuel) + park entry ~£18

🛏Addo-area backpackers or safari guesthouse (~£22–32 p/n)

  • →Full-day Addo self-drive safari
  • →Optional shared guided game drive (~£55–70)
~£75
Day 9

Addo to Cape St Francis

Cape St Francis / St Francis Bay

Drive down to the coast (~200 km) via Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha). Cape St Francis is a sleepy surf village with the 19th-century Seal Point lighthouse — walk the beach to it for free. The original's 'chokka tour' (squid boat trip with tasting) can be booked locally in St Francis Bay through the small boat operators; alternatively take a sunset kayak in the canals or a surf lesson (~£20–25).

🚌Self-drive ~200 km (~£16 fuel)

🛏St Francis Bay backpackers or guesthouse (~£20–28 p/n)

  • →Walk to Seal Point Lighthouse
  • →Optional local chokka/squid boat tour
  • →Optional surf lesson or canal kayak
~£65
Day 10

Beach day at Cape St Francis

Cape St Francis

Free day. Swim at Shark Point or Bruce's Beauties, hire a surfboard (~£10/day), or do the two-hour coastal hike towards Jeffreys Bay. Jeffreys Bay — one of the world's great surf towns — is 25 min away for a cheap lunch and second-hand surf shops. This is the rest day the group tour builds in.

🚌Local driving (~£5 fuel)

🛏St Francis Bay backpackers or guesthouse (~£20–28 p/n)

  • →Beach and swimming
  • →Surfboard hire
  • →Jeffreys Bay day trip
~£45
Day 11

Cape St Francis to Knysna via Tsitsikamma

Knysna

Drive west along the N2 into Tsitsikamma National Park (~150 km). Do the Storms River Mouth walk — the suspension bridges and the 45-minute climb to the Storms River Bridge viewpoint — with the ~£10 park entry. Optionally add the Storms River kayak-and-lilo tour (~£30–35) or the Bloukrans bungy (~£45). Continue to Knysna (~80 km) for the evening; wander the Waterfront and the Knysna Heads viewpoint at sunset.

🚌Self-drive ~230 km (~£18 fuel)

🛏Knysna backpackers or budget guesthouse (~£22–30 p/n)

  • →Tsitsikamma National Park / Storms River suspension bridges
  • →Optional Storms River kayak & lilo

Day 12

Knysna to Mossel Bay & Albertinia

Albertinia

Morning in Knysna (Saturday's Wild Oats market if timed right, or the Featherbed ferry, ~£15), then drive west to Mossel Bay (~110 km) to walk the St Blaize coastal trail and see the Cape St Blaize lighthouse. Continue to Albertinia (~50 km) at the edge of the Langeberg — the original books an open-top game drive here. Local private reserves (e.g. Garden Route Game Lodge area) offer 2-hour open-vehicle drives for ~£35–45, or a budget option is a guided nature walk.

Hermanus

Big driving day (~330 km). Stop in Swellendam (one of the oldest towns in South Africa) to see the Cape Dutch Drostdy Museum houses (~£4). Detour south to Cape Agulhas — the southernmost tip of Africa and the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans (free; lighthouse museum ~£3). Optional berry/wine tasting at a farm stall near Heidelberg/Riviersonderend. End in Hermanus for two overnights.

🚌Self-drive ~330 km (~£25 fuel)

🛏Hermanus backpackers or guesthouse (~£22–32 p/n)

  • →Swellendam Drostdy Museum
  • →Cape Agulhas southernmost tip
  • →Farm stall / berry tasting

Day 14

Hermanus whale watching and coastal walk

Hermanus

The original offers an optional whale-watching boat tour at ~1,730 ZAR (~£75) — book directly with Hermanus boat operators or via GetYourGuide for roughly the same price (June–Nov is peak southern right whale season; the Cliff Path is the best land-based whale watching in the world and free). Walk the 12 km Cliff Path in sections, and grab a traditional South African pie from a farm stall en route back. Afternoon drive on to Cape Town (~120 km) or stay the night in Hermanus.

🛏Hermanus guesthouse OR Cape Town hostel (~£22–32 p/n)

Day 15

Cape Town city day

Cape Town

Return the hire car, then do Cape Town on foot and by MyCiTi bus: Green Market Square, the Bo-Kaap (sample a samosa from a local shop for ~£1), and the V&A Waterfront. For Table Mountain, book the cableway online in advance (~£22 return; cheaper and faster than on-the-day) — if the cable car is closed for wind, hike Platteklip Gorge instead or take in the view from Signal Hill. Free walking tours of the city centre run daily (tip-based, ~£5).

Route: Chapman's Peak Drive (toll ~£2.50), Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point (park entry ~£18; optional funicular ~£4), lunch in Simon's Town, then Boulders Beach to see the African penguins (~£10). Use it for anything weather-dependent you missed (Table Mountain often closes for wind), a Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden visit (~£8), or a township tour or Robben Island ferry (~£25) booked via the official Nelson Mandela Gateway site. Frequently asked questions

How much does The Garden Route In-Depth — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,320 per person for 18 days in South Africa (Garden Route & Eastern Cape). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with SKR Reisen?+

Yes — SKR Reisen charges around £4,220 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,320 — a saving of roughly £2,900 (69%) per person.

How long is the South Africa (Garden Route & Eastern Cape) trip?+

This itinerary runs 18 days, covering 18 day-by-day stops through South Africa (Garden Route & Eastern Cape).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, road-trip, wildlife trip through South Africa (Garden Route & Eastern Cape), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
