Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A do-it-yourself version of Bamba Travel's 4-day Sandakan Orangutan Experience: two nights at a Kinabatangan riverside lodge plus a night near Sepilok, with the same headline wildlife — orangutans and sun bears at Sepilok, canopy walking at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, and dawn/afternoon river cruises in search of proboscis monkeys, hornbills and wild orangutans. Book the Sepilok sanctuaries and Kinabatangan lodge directly (or via GetYourGuide/Klook/daytrip operators), and travel by local minibus/shared taxi between Sandakan, Sepilok and Bilit. Costs are approximate per person sharing a twin/double; solo travellers should expect slightly higher lodge rates or single supplements.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Sandakan — Sepilok sanctuaries & rainforest canopy

Sandakan / Sepilok

Land at Sandakan Airport and take a Grab or shared taxi (about 30–40 min, ~£6–8) to your guesthouse near Sepilok or central Sandakan. Pre-book Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre tickets online (roughly RM35–40, ~£6–7) for the 10:00 or 15:00 feeding session and arrive 20 minutes early for the nursery viewing platform. Walk 5–10 minutes to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (about RM30–40, ~£5–7) and watch the rescued sun bears in the forest enclosure. In the afternoon head to the Rainforest Discovery Centre (about RM20, ~£3.60) for the Exhibition Centre and the 147m canopy walkway — best birding is late afternoon. Optional add-ons: Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary half-day tour (~£30–35 via Klook/GetYourGuide) or the Sepilok Forest Night Walk (~£8–12). Eat at the simple cafés around Sepilok or the Sandakan waterfront seafood stalls for dinner (~£6–8).

Return for breakfast, then do a guided jungle trek on the lodge's trail network (~2 hrs) learning about pitcher plants, medicinal plants and the floodplain forest — wear long trousers, leech socks and bring lots of water. Lunch and siesta through the hottest hours, then a second afternoon cruise up smaller tributaries (Menanggol or Tenegang) where proboscis monkey harems gather. Dinner at the lodge; many lodges offer a cultural presentation or night walk in the evening.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Sandakan Orangutan Experience — Self-Launched 4D/3N cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £345 per person for 4 days in Sabah, Borneo (Sandakan & Kinabatangan River), Malaysia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Bamba Travel?+

Yes — Bamba Travel charges around £565 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £345 — a saving of roughly £220 (39%) per person.

How long is the Sabah, Borneo (Sandakan & Kinabatangan River), Malaysia trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Sabah, Borneo (Sandakan & Kinabatangan River), Malaysia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a wildlife, adventure, hiking trip through Sabah, Borneo (Sandakan & Kinabatangan River), Malaysia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
