Land at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) and make your own way into town — a Grab ride to the waterfront/Gaya Street area costs about £3-4, or catch the airport bus for under £1. Check into a budget guesthouse or hostel in the central grid, then stretch your legs along the seafront and grab a first taste of Sabah at the night market or a hawker court (grilled fish, laksa, fresh juice). Tomorrow's an early start, so keep it easy.

Head east across Sabah to Tabin Wildlife Reserve, one of the best spots in Borneo for rainforest wildlife. There's no direct public bus, so the practical DIY route is a shared car/Grab to Lahad Datu side or a long-distance express bus toward Lahad Datu/Kalabakan, then a pre-arranged pickup into the reserve — book the transfer with your jungle lodge when you reserve. Start with an early guided bird walk — Tabin holds almost 300 species. After breakfast, head to the bird-watching tower and trek through the rainforest to Lipad Waterfall, where you can swim in the natural pool and stand under the falls. Travel by road toward Sukau on the Kinabatangan River, then swap wheels for a boat for the last leg to your rustic riverside lodge. The Kinabatangan is Borneo's wildlife superhighway — keep your eyes peeled for proboscis monkeys, long- and short-tailed macaques, hornbills and, if you're lucky, the famed Borneo pygmy elephants. Travel west toward Kinabalu National Park, breaking the journey at Poring Hot Springs for a soak in the open-air sulphur pools. Spend the morning in Kinabalu National Park walking the lower trails and soaking up views of Mt Kinabalu (when the clouds cooperate). Then head down to the coast at Tuaran for an afternoon of beach, pool and fresh seafood. If you've energy left, an optional guided jungle walk is available nearby.

Make your way back past Sandakan area (or arrange a detour) to visit an orangutan rehabilitation centre — Sepilok is the gold-standard option, with feeding-time viewing and an educational film. Learn about the rescue and rehabilitation work, then travel north to Kudat, home for the next three nights, famed for white-sand beaches and turquoise water. Note this is a longer travel day by Sabah standards; if Sepilok is too far out of the way, visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre or an alternative sanctuary en route and confirm distances when booking.
