£358saved per person (68%)

No-markup version: ~£172 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Bravo Indochina Tours' 3-day Phong Nha cave and lagoon trip, starting and ending in Dong Hoi. Book the Tu Lan Cave / Hung Ton trek directly with Oxalis Adventure (the licensed operator for Tu Lan), arrange the Dark Cave zipline-mud bath kayak combo on site, and take a dragon boat to Phong Nha Cave yourself — with nights spent in a Phong Nha village guesthouse or the Chay Lap Farmstay area. All costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Dong Hoi to Phong Nha / Chay Lap: Bicycles and River Lagoons

Phong Nha / Chay Lap

Take a local bus or shared taxi from Dong Hoi (approx 45 km, ~45-60 min) to Phong Nha village or Chay Lap, ~£3-5. Check into a guesthouse or the Chay Lap Farmstay-style homestay. Rent a bicycle (~£2-3/day) and ride the quiet lanes of the Chay Lap / Phong Nha riverside area, stopping at the river for a swim or a self-hired kayak (~£4-6) if weather allows. Note from past travellers: the farmstay itself doesn't hand you a programme — just ask reception about bike rental and river access. Buy your own dinner in Phong Nha village (~£4-6); the village has plenty of cheap com tam and pho spots. Getting to bed early is smart — tomorrow is a big trek day.

🚌Local bus or shared taxi Dong Hoi to Phong Nha (~£3-5); bicycle rental ~£2-3

🛏Guesthouse/homestay in Phong Nha village or Chay Lap area (~£10-15/night)

  • →Bicycle ride through Chay Lap and Phong Nha riverside lanes
  • →Swimming or kayaking in the river (weather permitting)
  • →Evening wander and dinner in Phong Nha village
~£32
Day 2

Tu Lan Cave Trek: Hung Ton Cave, Rat Cave and Underground River Swim

Tan Hoa / Tu Lan cave system

Book the Tu Lan Cave Encounter (or 1-day Tu Lan experience) directly with Oxalis Adventure — they are the licensed operator for Tu Lan and the only people running guided treks into these caves, so this replaces the tour's Day 2 entirely. Expect an early pickup from Phong Nha (~7:00), a safety briefing in Tan Hoa, then a hike through Tan Hoa Valley and Hung Ton Valley, wading and swimming into Rat Cave and Hung Ton Cave, and a swim in the underground river plus the natural lake at the cave exit. Picnic lunch is included by Oxalis. IMPORTANT: bring long sleeves, long trousers and proper trekking shoes or boots — rentals are available but limited, and past travellers were caught short. Budget ~£70-100 for the trek depending on season and group size. Return to Phong Nha late afternoon; dinner in the village (~£5).

🚌Included pickup from Phong Nha to Tan Hoa and back (part of the Oxalis trek booking)

🛏Guesthouse/homestay in Phong Nha village (~£10-15/night)

  • →Guided trek through Tan Hoa and Hung Ton valleys
  • →Rat Cave and Hung Ton Cave exploration (stalactites, cave pearls)
  • →Swimming in the underground river and Hung Ton exit lake
  • →Picnic lunch inside the cave
~£95
Day 3

Dark Cave Zipline, Mud Bath and Phong Nha Cave by Dragon Boat

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Morning at Dark Cave: arrange the zipline + mud bath + kayak + cave adventure package on site or via your guesthouse the day before (~£14-18). It's a short ride from Phong Nha village — rent a scooter (~£5/day) or take a taxi (~£4 each way). You zip across the river, swim and mud-bathe inside the cave, kayak out, and finish with a hot shower on site. Lunch at a local restaurant in Phong Nha village (~£4-5, vegetarian options easy to find). In the afternoon, walk down to the Phong Nha Cave boat dock and buy a dragon boat ticket (~£11-15 per boat, split between passengers) for the ~25-minute ride upriver and a 300 m on-foot walk through Phong Nha Cave. Afterwards take the local bus or a shared taxi back to Dong Hoi (~£3-5) to finish the trip.

🚌Scooter or taxi to Dark Cave (~£4-8); dragon boat to Phong Nha Cave (~£11-15 per boat); local bus back to Dong Hoi (~£3-5)

🛏None included — travel onward to Dong Hoi or Hue

  • →Dark Cave zipline, mud bath, swimming, kayaking and adventure course
  • →Traditional Vietnamese lunch in Phong Nha village
  • →Dragon boat ride and on-foot exploration of Phong Nha Cave
~£45

Frequently asked questions

How much does Phong Nha Caves & Lagoons: Self-Launched 3-Day Adventure cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £172 per person for 3 days in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Bravo Indochina Tours?+

Yes — Bravo Indochina Tours charges around £530 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £172 — a saving of roughly £358 (68%) per person.

How long is the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam trip?+

This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, backpacker, budget trip through Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
