£1,200saved per person (60%)

No-markup version: ~£795 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

Pedal, hike, kayak and feast your way around Greece's stunning Peloponnese Peninsula — entirely independently. This self-launched version follows the same route as Much Better Adventures' premium guided tour, swapping boutique group packages for hand-picked guesthouses, self-booked activities and local buses. You'll still hike the legendary Menalon Trail, snorkel above sunken ruins near Epidaurus, sip Nemean wines, and cook Greek food from scratch — just without the guided tour price tag. Based in the stone village of Dimitsana and the elegant coastal town of Nafplio, this is one of Greece's most rewarding and least-touristy corners. All costs are approximate estimates per person.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Athens to Arcadia — Arriving in Dimitsana

Dimitsana, Arcadia

Fly into Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (ATH) and make your own way to the Peloponnese. Take the X93 express bus from the airport to Kifissos Bus Station (around £4, ~1hr), then catch a KTEL Arkadias coach to Dimitsana via Tripoli (around £12–15, ~3hrs). Alternatively, hire a car from the airport for the week — highly recommended for this region, giving you total flexibility. Dimitsana is a beautifully preserved stone village perched above the Lousios Gorge. Check in to your guesthouse and explore the cobbled lanes before dinner at a local taverna — try the lamb kleftiko and a carafe of house red.

🚌X93 airport express bus to Kifissos Bus Station (~£4), then KTEL Arkadias coach to Dimitsana via Tripoli (~£12). Or hire a car at Athens Airport (~£35–45/day) for full flexibility across the trip.

Hike the Menalon Trail — Vytina to Magouliana

Menalon Trail, Arcadia

This is one of Greece's finest long-distance hiking routes and you can walk it completely independently — no guide needed. Drive or take a local taxi (~£10 each way) from Dimitsana to Vytina (the trailhead). From Vytina, follow the waymarked Menalon Trail (E4, well-signposted) for approximately 15km through pine forests, over the elegant Tzavarenas stone bridge, along the Mylaon River, and up to Magouliana — the highest village in the Peloponnese at 1,200m. The trail is clearly marked; download the Menalon Trail map from the official website (menalontrail.eu) or use Komoot/AllTrails for offline navigation. Finish with a late lunch at a traditional taverna in Vytina before returning to Dimitsana.

🚌Drive or take a local taxi from Dimitsana to Vytina (~20min, ~£10 each way). If travelling without a car, ask your guesthouse to arrange a taxi.

Day 3

E-Biking the Menalon Trail & Wine Tasting in Nemea

Menalon Trail / Nemea / Nafplio

Rent e-bikes locally in Dimitsana or Vytina — several outfitters in the region offer e-bike hire, including Menalon Trail Bike (book ahead online, ~£25–35/day per bike). Ride a 25km stretch of the Menalon Trail through shady forests and traditional villages at a leisurely pace with electric assistance on the uphills. In the afternoon, drive or bus towards Nafplio and detour through the Nemea wine region — book a visit and tasting at Gaia Wines or Skouras Winery (both offer drop-in tastings and vineyard tours for ~£12–18 per person). Arrive in Nafplio in the evening and check in to your new base. Dinner in Nafplio's buzzing old town — seafood is the order of the day.

🚌Drive or arrange a taxi from Dimitsana to e-bike start point. After riding, drive/bus via Nemea to Nafplio (~2hrs total). KTEL buses connect the region but a hire car is far more practical for this day.

Day 4

Sea Kayaking, Snorkelling & the Epidaurus Theatre

Epidaurus, Argolic Gulf

Head to the coast near Epidaurus (around 30min drive from Nafplio) for a morning of sea kayaking and snorkelling above the submerged ruins of the ancient city of Limanaki. Book a guided kayak and snorkel excursion through GetYourGuide or directly with Kayak Adventures Greece (based in Nafplio) — these run small-group tours of 4–8 people for around £45–65 per person and include equipment (kayak, paddle, snorkel, mask, safety vest). The ancient ruins beneath the clear Aegean water are genuinely surreal. In the afternoon, visit the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus independently — entrance is around £12 and the acoustics are extraordinary. Return to Nafplio for a free evening: rooftop drinks overlooking Palamidi Fortress are a must.

🚌Drive or take a local bus/taxi from Nafplio to Epidaurus (~30min, ~£8 taxi each way). KTEL buses from Nafplio to Epidaurus run a few times daily (~£3 each way).

🛏Same guesthouse as Day 3 in Nafplio.

  • Sea kayaking and snorkelling at the sunken city near Epidaurus — book via GetYourGuide or Kayak Adventures Greece (~£45–65pp, includes all equipment)
  • Self-visit to the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus (~£12 entrance, buy tickets on site or via etickets.tap.gr)

Day 5

Olive Oil Tasting, Beach Day & Greek Cooking Class

Nafplio & surrounds

Start the morning with a visit to a boutique olive oil producer near Nafplio — Biolea or Moulino Olive Mill offer tastings and farm visits (book direct, ~£10–15pp). Learn about cold-pressing techniques and taste your way through grassy, peppery and buttery varieties. Then head to one of Nafplio's beaches — Arvanitia Beach is a short walk from the old town (free), or take a water taxi to Karathona Beach (£3 each way). Swim, relax and enjoy a coffee at a beachside café. In the afternoon, book a hands-on Greek cooking class in Nafplio — several local chefs run small-group sessions (search GetYourGuide 'Greek cooking class Nafplio' or book with Nafplio Cooking School, ~£55–70pp). You'll prepare mezze, mains and desserts using fresh local ingredients, then sit down to enjoy the feast together.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched: Hike, E-Bike and Feast in Greece's Peloponnese cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £795 per person for 6 days in Peloponnese, Greece. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £1,995 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £795 — a saving of roughly £1,200 (60%) per person.

How long is the Peloponnese, Greece trip?+

This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Peloponnese, Greece.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, foodie trip through Peloponnese, Greece, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
