This self-launched version of Much Better Adventures' popular Norwegian Fjords expedition takes you on the same epic 43-mile journey through Nærøyfjord and Sognefjord — hiking rugged mountain plateaus, wild camping on the fjord's edge, and kayaking beneath sheer cliff faces — at a fraction of the guided price. You'll swap the group operator for self-booked budget accommodation in Voss, hire kayaking gear and camping equipment independently, and use local buses and the Bergen–Voss train to connect the dots. Norway isn't cheap, but cutting out the operator margin makes this wildly more accessible. Expect breathtaking scenery, world-class outdoor adventure, and serious bragging rights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Bergen & Transfer to Voss

Bergen / Voss

Fly into Bergen Airport Flesland (BGO). Take the direct train from Bergen to Voss — it runs regularly throughout the day, takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, and costs around £15-20 each way. Voss is Norway's adventure capital and your base for the first night. Check into Voss Vandrarheim (Voss HI Hostel) or Fleischer's budget rooms for a simple, clean night's sleep. Head out into Voss town for dinner — try a local café or grab groceries from the Rema 1000 or Coop supermarket to keep costs down. If the weather's good, take a dip in Vangsvatnet lake — a local tradition before a big expedition.

🚌Fly to Bergen (BGO), then Bergen–Voss train via Vy (vy.no), ~£16 one-way

The Expedition Begins — Gudvangen to Hjølmo via Rimstigen & Breiskrednosi

Gudvangen / Naerøyfjord highlands

Take the early bus from Voss to Gudvangen (Skyss Bus 991/993, ~45 mins, ~£8). This is the start of your hiking expedition. The trail from Gudvangen follows the Naerøyfjord to the village of Bakka, then climbs steeply to the Rimstigen viewpoint at 2,379 ft — your first jaw-dropping panorama of the fjord below. Continue ascending to the ridge and push on to the summit of Breiskrednosi (3,901 ft). This is an 8–10 hour day with 3,937 ft of ascent — one of the hardest days of the trip. Descend via the plateau past old farms to the mountain cabin at Hjølmo. Book the Hjølmo DNT cabin (Den Norske Turistforening / Norwegian Trekking Association) in advance at ut.no — members get discounted rates. Cook dinner in the cabin kitchen.

Day 3

Hike Hjølmo to Lægdane — Plateau & Alpine Forest

Fjord highlands / Lægdane

After breakfast at the cabin, lace up your boots and head back up to the highland plateau — you'll be hiking above the treeline for much of today at around 3,280 ft. Navigate across a vast mountain plateau, potentially with lingering snow patches, before descending into the sub-alpine furu forest around Lægdane. This wetlands area is home to small hidden lakes and slow-grown timber trees. Today is 5–6 hours of hiking, covering around 9 miles. Set up camp in the forest — this is wild camping, so pick a Leave No Trace spot near Lægdane. Before bed, explore the exit point of Lægdafossen waterfall and soak up the views down into the fjord from 2,297 ft.

🚌Self-powered hiking — no transport needed

🛏Wild camping near Lægdane forest (free — Norway's allemansretten right to roam)

Day 4

Roam from Summit to Sea Level — Descent to Fresvik

Plateau / Fresvik / Sognefjord

Enjoy a leisurely wild camp breakfast in the forest before continuing across the plateau and beginning the long, satisfying descent to the fjordside village of Fresvik. Today is mostly downhill (3,281 ft descent, ~7 miles, 4–5 hours), with magnificent views across the Sognefjord opening up as you approach Fresvik. Arrive mid-afternoon. Tonight you'll wild camp right on the shoreline of the Sognefjord — one of the trip's finest moments. This is the last night of the hiking section. Celebrate around a small campfire (check local fire rules — Norway bans open fires in nature between 15 April and 15 September, so use a camping stove). Charge your devices in Fresvik village if you can find a café or public outlet.

🛏Wild camping on Sognefjord shoreline near Fresvik (free under allemansretten)

~£35
Day 5

Kayaking the Fjords — Fresvik to Dyrdal via Nærøyfjord

Sognefjord / Nærøyfjord

Today you swap boots for a paddle. You'll need to arrange kayak hire in advance — Njord Sea Kayaking (njord.as) based in Flåm/Gudvangen is the main local operator and offers guided day paddles and multi-day hire on the Nærøyfjord. Alternatively, book a multi-day guided kayaking tour from Gudvangen via GetYourGuide or Klook to cover Days 5–6, which removes the logistics. If hiring independently, get a safety briefing from the hire company before launching. Paddle from Fresvik through the serene Sognefjord and into the Nærøyfjord — a UNESCO World Heritage Site flanked by 1,000m cliffs. Pass Lægdafossen waterfall from the water — a completely different perspective from your hike. Keep eyes peeled for seals, porpoises and sea eagles. Paddle ~14 miles over 4–5 hours to your wild camp pull-out spot near Dyrdal.

Final Paddle — Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen & Return to Bergen

Nærøyfjord / Gudvangen / Bergen

Wake up in the wild for the last time — take a bracing swim in the fjord if you dare! After breakfast, paddle the final 7 miles through the magnificent Nærøyfjord to the finish line at Gudvangen kayak base (~4–5 hours). The scenery for this final stretch is extraordinary: towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and remote valleys. Return your kayak hire at Gudvangen. From Gudvangen, take the Skyss Bus 991/993 back to Voss (~45 mins, ~£8), then connect to the Bergen train (£16). You should reach Bergen by early evening in time for flights. Alternatively, book the Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) from Flåm to Myrdal and change for Bergen — one of the world's most scenic rail journeys (~£30, bookable at visitflam.com).

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Hike, Kayak & Wild Camp in the Norwegian Fjords cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £405 per person for 6 days in Norwegian Fjords, Norway. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £1,395 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £405 — a saving of roughly £990 (71%) per person.

How long is the Norwegian Fjords, Norway trip?+

This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Norwegian Fjords, Norway.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, backpacker trip through Norwegian Fjords, Norway, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
