Norway Fjord Trekking (Self-Launched)
7 days · Norway
G Adventures charges £2,559
No-markup version: ~£2,025 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of G Adventures' 7-day Norway Fjord Trekking: base yourself in Bergen then Odda and tackle the region's legendary hikes independently — the Buerdalen valley in the Valley of the Waterfalls, the Folgefonna Glacier, and the mighty Trolltunga — using public ferries, buses and self-booked guided glacier hikes. Norway is expensive, so budget carefully with hostel/guesthouse stays, supermarket meals and the excellent coach and ferry network along the Hardangerfjord.
Day-by-day
Arrive in Bergen
Bergen
Arrive into Bergen at any time and check into a budget hostel or guesthouse in the city centre. Spend the afternoon on a self-launched orientation walk: wander Bryggen's UNESCO-listed wooden wharves, climb the Fløyen funicular or hike up for free, and pick up supplies from a supermarket (Rema 1000 or Kiwi) — eating out in Norway is brutal on the wallet. Tonight, message any hiking partners you've linked up with via a backpacker group chat to plan the week and check the weather forecast on yr.no.
🚌Airport bus (Flybussen) into Bergen centre ~£12, or light rail ~£4
🛏Budget hostel dorm or guesthouse, central Bergen (~£30-45/night)
- →Bryggen wharf walk
- →Fløyen viewpoint (hike up, funicular down optional)
- →Fisketorget fish market browse
Bergen to Odda via the Hardangerfjord
Odda
Breakfast at the hostel, then make the scenic journey to Odda, the base in the heart of the fjords. The operator uses a ferry plus private vehicle; do it just as well with public transport: take the express boat (hurtigbåt) or Kystbussen/coach toward Norheimsund and connect onward toward Odda, or take the train to Voss and bus from there. The route hugs the Hardangerfjord and is genuinely stunning — sit on the right side. Arrive in Odda, check into your guesthouse, then stretch your legs on a short introductory hike above town to test your boots and gear.
🚌Public express boat + coach along the fjord ~£35-50, or train to Voss + bus ~£30
🛏Guesthouse or hostel in Odda (~£35-50/night)
- →Hardangerfjord scenic ferry/coach journey
- →Short warm-up hike above Odda
Buerdalen Valley hike
Odda
Oddadalen is known as the Valley of the Waterfalls and the Buerdalen valley hike is a beautiful, challenging 10km there-and-back through wooded ravine and past tumbling falls. The trail has varied terrain and some technical sections — this is your training run for Trolltunga. Pack lunch, plenty of water and layers (Norwegian weather changes fast). Trailheads are best reached by local bus or a short taxi share from Odda; many travellers hitch the short distance or split a taxi. Back in town, cook dinner at the guesthouse and rest your legs.
🚌Local bus or shared taxi to trailhead ~£5-10
🛏Guesthouse or hostel in Odda (~£35-50/night)
- →10km Buerdalen valley hike
- →Waterfall spotting in Oddadalen
Folgefonna Glacier guided hike
Folgefonna Glacier
The highlight of the ice: hike across the frozen landscape of the Folgefonna Glacier, one of Norway's largest. The operator uses an expert local guide — you can book the identical experience yourself directly with local glacier operators in Odda/Jondal (search 'Folgefonna glacier hike' on GetYourGuide or Klook, or book direct with the guiding companies that run it). You'll strap on crampons and head out onto the ice for spectacular views. Self-booked group glacier hikes typically run ~£100-150 per person including guide and gear. Return to Odda in the evening.
🚌Shared transfer to glacier meeting point ~£10-15 (often included in guide fee)
🛏Guesthouse or hostel in Odda (~£35-50/night)
- →Guided glaciated ice hike with crampons on Folgefonna
- →Glacier and fjord viewpoints
Free day in the fjords
Odda
A free day to relax in the beauty of the surrounding fjords or pick from the many optional activities the area offers: kayaking on the fjord, a fjord cruise, a via ferrata route, the Bondhusvatnet lake walk, or the Trolltunga Via Ferrata sunset/sunrise extension the operator sells as an add-on (~£400+ — book direct if you want it). Alternatively rest, do laundry and prep food for tomorrow's big hike. This is an ideal day to slow down and let your legs recover before Trolltunga.
🚌Local buses or taxi shares for optional activities ~£5-15
🛏Guesthouse or hostel in Odda (~£35-50/night)
- →Fjord kayaking or cruise (optional)
- →Bondhusvatnet lake walk
- →Rest and recovery day
Trolltunga — the Troll's Tongue
Trolltunga
The week's big one. Gear up early for the challenging full-day trek to Trolltunga, the famous rock jutting 700m above Ringedalsvatnet lake. The classic route from Skjeggedal is roughly 27km return with significant ascent — expect 10-12 hours and start at dawn. There is no cable car and no guide required, but you must be fit, self-sufficient with food/water, and check conditions. Take the early public bus or shared shuttle to Skjeggedal trailhead (book shuttle seats ahead in peak season). Do NOT attempt the exposed photo ledge in wind or rain — safety first. Return to Odda exhausted and triumphant.
🚌Early public bus/shuttle to Skjeggedal trailhead ~£10-20 return
🛏Guesthouse or hostel in Odda (~£35-50/night)
- →Full-day Trolltunga trek (~27km return)
- →Ringedalsvatnet lake viewpoints
Odda to Bergen — trip ends
Bergen
Leaving Odda behind, take the public bus back to Bergen (Kystbussen runs the route; book ahead for the best fares). This scenic three-to-four hour ride retraces the fjord country you've hiked. Trip ends on arrival in Bergen — if you're flying out, the operator recommends a departure no earlier than 17:00 on Day 7 to allow for the journey back and airport transfer. If you have time, grab a last cinnamon bun in Bergen before heading to the airport.
🚌Kystbussen coach Odda to Bergen ~£25-40; Bergen airport bus ~£12 if flying
🛏None (trip ends) — onward travel or extra night in Bergen if needed
- →Scenic coach back to Bergen
- →Optional last stops in Bergen

Frequently asked questions
How much does Norway Fjord Trekking (Self-Launched) cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £2,025 per person for 7 days in Norway. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,559 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £2,025 — a saving of roughly £534 (21%) per person.
How long is the Norway trip?+
This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Norway.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, hiking, gap-year trip through Norway, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
