A self-launched 11-day trekking adventure through Vietnam's far north — Hanoi, Ba Be National Park, the homestay villages of Cao Bang, Ban Gioc Falls and Cat Ba Island in Lan Ha Bay. This is the independent version of Much Better Adventures' small-group trek: you book local guides, homestays and buses yourself, hike the same trails, and still get the warm Thai and Nung hospitality. Land at Noi Bai Airport and take a Grab or the airport shuttle bus (No. 86, ~£1.20) to the Old Quarter. Check into a hostel or budget hotel near Hoan Kiem Lake. In the afternoon walk the lake, visit Ngoc Son Temple, and orient yourself with a bowl of pho bo (bun cha or banh cuon also excellent) at a street stall. If you'd like a guide for the week, this is the night to meet them — many Hanoi trekking outfits (e.g. via GetYourGuide) will do a briefing over dinner in the Old Quarter.

Morning hike (~8km) along the river and up to the Trung Khanh valley viewpoint, following the old horse-trading trail to China. Then transfer (local bus or hired car, ~4 hrs) north to Ban Gioc Falls on the Chinese border. Hike the 200 steps to the viewpoint over the falls and cross to the Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda for the lookout. In the late afternoon continue by bus to Lang Son province and check into a hotel for a night of comfort.
