No-markup version: ~£1,370 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of the classic 7-day Northern Circuit safari: Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti plains, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. Instead of a fully guided private Land Cruiser package, you arrange a base in Moshi, join shared small-group game drives booked direct with Arusha-based operators or via GetYourGuide, use public/shared shuttles for the Moshi–Arusha–Mto wa Mbu legs, stay in guesthouses and public campsites, and add the Mto wa Mbu cultural walk independently. Costs are rough backpacker estimates and vary a lot with season, group size and whether you join shared or private departures — park fees are the single biggest fixed cost and are non-negotiable.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport & settle into Moshi

Moshi

Land at Kilimanjaro International (JRO), change money and buy a local SIM (Vodacom/Tigo data bundle ~£5) at the airport. Skip the private transfer: walk out to the taxi rank and agree a fare to Moshi town, or take a shared taxi/bajaji if you're arriving in daylight (taxi ~£15-20 for the car, shared ~£4 per person). Check into a Moshi guesthouse, sort your Arusha shuttle for tomorrow and eat at a local 'hoteli' (ugali, beans, grilled chicken, ~£4). Confirm your safari bookings by phone/WhatsApp and pick up any rented camping gear you still need.

🚌Taxi or shared taxi from JRO to Moshi (~£15-20 per car / ~£4 per person shared)

🛏Moshi guesthouse or budget hotel, twin/dorm room (~£14)

  • →Airport SIM and cash run
  • →Moshi town wander and safari briefing
~£40
Day 2

Moshi to Mto wa Mbu & Lake Manyara game drive

Mto wa Mbu / Lake Manyara

Take an early shuttle or public bus from Moshi to Arusha (~£5, 2hrs), then a second bus or dalla-dalla down to Mto wa Mbu (~£3, 1.5-2hrs). Drop bags at a guesthouse in the village and join an afternoon game drive in Lake Manyara National Park — book a shared day trip through your guesthouse or an Arusha operator (~£95-110 including park fees, guide and vehicle share). Look for tree-climbing lions, huge elephant herds and flamingos along the lakeshore. Back in Mto wa Mbu for dinner at a local spot.

🚌Moshi–Arusha shuttle/bus ~£5; Arusha–Mto wa Mbu bus ~£3

🛏Mto wa Mbu guesthouse, private or twin room (~£16)

  • →Lake Manyara National Park shared game drive with park fees
  • →Village orientation walk
~£135
Day 3

Rift Valley escarpment, Maasai boma & into the Serengeti

Serengeti National Park

Join a 3-day shared Serengeti/Ngorongoro camping safari from Mto wa Mbu or Arusha — these are sold by many small Arusha operators and via GetYourGuide, typically £380-480 per person for shared camping including park fees, food, vehicle and guide. Today you climb the escarpment past Lake Manyara viewpoints, stop at a Maasai boma for a visit (agree the fee upfront, usually ~£10-25 per person, and don't be shy about negotiating), optionally detour to Olduvai Gorge museum (~£10 entry), then enter the Serengeti via Naabi Hill Gate for a late-afternoon game drive. Overnight at a public campsite inside or near the park.

🚌Shared safari Land Cruiser from Mto wa Mbu, full day transfer ~£30 of the package

🛏Public campsite tent (Serengeti, e.g. Nyani/Simba) with basic ablutions (~£15 equivalent within safari price)

  • →Rift Valley viewpoint stops
  • →Maasai boma visit (optional, ~£15)
  • →Olduvai Gorge museum (optional, ~£10)
  • →En-route Serengeti game drive
~£190
Day 4

Full Serengeti morning & transfer to Ngorongoro

Serengeti / Ngorongoro

Up before dawn for a half-day game drive in the central Serengeti — the Seronera valley is the most reliable spot for leopard, lion prides and cheetah, and if you're travelling June-September you may hit the wildebeest migration herds. Return for brunch, then drive south to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, passing the crater rim at sunset. Overnight at a public campsite on the rim (Simba or Ngorongoro Wild-style) — it's cold up there at 2,300m, so layer up.

🚌Shared safari vehicle transfer Serengeti–Ngorongoro (~£25 of the package)

🛏Ngorongoro rim public campsite tent (~£15 equivalent within safari price)

  • →Sunrise game drive in Seronera valley
  • →Crater rim sunset viewpoint
~£145
Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater & walking safari

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Descend into the crater on an early morning game drive — this is the best single chance in Tanzania for black rhino, plus dense lion, buffalo, hippo and flamingo populations on the soda lake. Crater descent fees are stiff (~£60-70 per vehicle plus park fees, included in a proper shared safari package) so don't try to DIY this day. In the afternoon add a ranger-led walking safari on the crater highlands (~£20-30 per person, arranged at the gate or via your operator) — a totally different perspective from the vehicle. Drive back to Karatu or Mto wa Mbu for the night.

🚌Shared safari vehicle crater descent and transfer back (~£25 of the package)

🛏Karatu/Mto wa Mbu guesthouse, twin room (~£18)

  • →Ngorongoro Crater full game drive
  • →Ranger-led walking safari (~£25)
~£160
Day 6

Mto wa Mbu cultural day — farms, market & banana beer

Mto wa Mbu

A slow day on your own terms. Book the village cultural walk direct with a Mto wa Mbu community guide (arrange the evening before at your guesthouse; ~£15-25 per person, cheaper than any package add-on). Cycle or walk out to a banana and rice farm, learn how banana beer and local wine are brewed and taste them, browse the busy fruit and vegetable market and sit down for a traditional lunch cooked by a local family (~£6). Afternoon free: swim or chill, or rent a bike and ride towards Lake Manyara shoreline. Book your Tarangire day trip for tomorrow morning.

🚌Walking and bicycle hire (~£4)

🛏Mto wa Mbu guesthouse, twin room (~£18)

  • →Mto wa Mbu cultural walk with local guide
  • →Banana beer tasting and farm visit
  • →Market visit and traditional lunch
~£65
Day 7

Tarangire National Park game drive & onward travel

Tarangire National Park / Moshi

Early start for a shared day safari into Tarangire National Park (~£110-140 including park fees, guide, vehicle share and lunch box) — famous for its giant baobabs and the densest elephant concentrations in northern Tanzania, plus tree-climbing pythons and big cat sightings around the Tarangire River. Return by late afternoon, then take the bus back to Arusha and on to Moshi (~£8), or straight to Kilimanjaro Airport for an evening flight. If you fly out the next morning, a cheap Moshi guesthouse for the night is ~£14.

🚌Shared safari vehicle to Tarangire; bus Mto wa Mbu–Arusha–Moshi ~£8

🛏Optional final night in Moshi guesthouse (~£14) or onward flight

  • →Tarangire National Park shared game drive
  • →Baobab and elephant viewing
~£150

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Northern Tanzania Safari: Moshi, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Tarangire cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,370 per person for 7 days in Northern Tanzania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with World Adventure Tours?+

Yes — World Adventure Tours charges around £1,900 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,370 — a saving of roughly £530 (28%) per person.

How long is the Northern Tanzania trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Northern Tanzania.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, culture trip through Northern Tanzania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
