India Tiger Safari — Self-Launched: Delhi, Ranthambore & Bandhavgarh

10 days · Northern & Central India

Golden Triangle India Tours charges £1,180

£220saved per person (19%)

No-markup version: ~£960 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of the 10-day India Tiger Safari group tour, covering New Delhi, Ranthambore National Park and Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. Instead of a fully guided private-transport package, you book your own budget hotels and jungle lodges, purchase safari permits directly through the official state forest department booking portals (Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh), and travel by sleeper/AC train and intercity bus between stops. You'll do the same morning and afternoon jeep safaris with naturalists — but shared rather than private — plus Ranthambore Fort and an optional stop at Khajuraho. Costs are realistic backpacker/mid-budget estimates in GBP and exclude international flights, travel insurance and monument entry fees.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive New Delhi — orient yourself in Paharganj

New Delhi

Land at Indira Gandhi International and take the Airport Express Metro to New Delhi station (approx. £1.50) or a prepaid taxi (~£5–7) to Paharganj or Karol Bagh. Check into a budget guesthouse, then ease into the city: wander Connaught Place, grab street food (chole bhature, parathas) and sort out your onward train tickets at the reservation counter or on IRCTC. Evening stroll through the lit-up bazaars of Main Bazaar.

Delhi sights, then overnight train to Sawai Madhopur

New Delhi → Sawai Madhopur

Spend the day on a self-guided Old Delhi loop: Red Fort exterior and Chandni Chowk (paratha lane), Jama Masjid, and optionally Humayun's Tomb or Qutub Minar if time allows. Skip the private car — use the Delhi Metro and short auto-rickshaw hops. In the evening head to Hazrat Nizamuddin or New Delhi station for an overnight sleeper/3AC train to Sawai Madhopur (gateway to Ranthambore), roughly 5–6 hours.

Day 3

Ranthambore — morning & afternoon safaris

Sawai Madhopur / Ranthambore

Arrive early and check into a budget jungle lodge in Sawai Madhopur town (cheaper than the resort strip). Head out on a shared 6-seat Gypsy jeep safari in the morning and another in the afternoon — permits are booked online in advance on the Rajasthan Forest Department portal (book as early as possible; core-zone slots sell out weeks ahead). Evenings are for chai, wildlife photography and swapping tiger sightings with other travellers.

Day 4

Ranthambore — second full safari day

Sawai Madhopur / Ranthambore

Another two shared safaris (morning and late afternoon), the classic rhythm for maximising tiger odds. Between drives, rest at the lodge or hire a bicycle to the lake edges. Book permits for tomorrow's zones in advance if you want a different sector — Zone 3 and Zone 6 are the classic tiger zones.

Day 5

Ranthambore Fort hike, then back to Delhi

Ranthambore → New Delhi

Walk up to Ranthambore Fort inside the park (entry included with some safari tickets or a small fee) for sweeping views and troops of langurs — a great low-cost morning. Afterwards, take an afternoon or evening train back to Delhi (5–6 hrs) and settle into a Paharganj guesthouse for the night.

Fly or train to Jabalpur — transfer to Bandhavgarh

The long hop south. Easiest option is a cheap domestic flight Delhi–Jabalpur (~£40–60 booked ahead on IndiGo/SpiceJet); the budget alternative is an overnight train (~14 hrs, AC3 ~£15). From Jabalpur, take a shared taxi or the local bus to Tala village at the Bandhavgarh gate (~4 hrs, ~£4–8 shared). Check into a budget wildlife lodge and pre-book your Bandhavgarh permits on the MP Forest Department portal (Bandhavgarh is closed Wednesday afternoons).

Day 7

Bandhavgarh — morning & afternoon jeep safaris

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Bandhavgarh has one of India's densest tiger populations. Do a morning shared jeep safari (Tala zone is the classic) and an afternoon one, each with a forest-department naturalist. Shared jeeps hold six and are booked per-seat — the cheapest way in. Spend the rest of the day at the lodge and plan your zone rotation for tomorrow.

Day 8

Bandhavgarh — full safari day

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Two more safaris — a morning drive and a late-afternoon drive, the best light for photography. If permits allow, try a different zone (Magadhi or Khitauli) for varied terrain. Optional extras at low cost: a village walk, or a visit to the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort on the reserve's ridge (arranged locally, subject to forest permission).

Morning shared taxi/bus back to Jabalpur. If you have time before your onward train/flight, the UNESCO temples at Khajuraho are reachable by road or a short hop and make a superb bonus stop (as the original tour's reviewers noted). Otherwise fly or take the overnight train back to Delhi and check into a guesthouse near the station.

Frequently asked questions

How much does India Tiger Safari — Self-Launched: Delhi, Ranthambore & Bandhavgarh cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £960 per person for 10 days in Northern & Central India. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Golden Triangle India Tours?+

Yes — Golden Triangle India Tours charges around £1,180 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £960 — a saving of roughly £220 (19%) per person.

How long is the Northern & Central India trip?+

This itinerary runs 10 days, covering 10 day-by-day stops through Northern & Central India.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a wildlife, adventure, culture trip through Northern & Central India, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
