Southern Kiwi: Self-Launched South Island Road & Bus Adventure
15 days · New Zealand South Island
Kiwi Experience charges £1,680
No-markup version: ~£1,370 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched, hostel-based loop of New Zealand's South Island covering the same ground as Kiwi Experience's 15-day Southern Kiwi small-group tour — Christchurch, Kaikoura, Abel Tasman, Hanmer Springs, Arthur's Pass, Franz Josef, Wanaka, Queenstown, Milford Sound and Lake Tekapo. Instead of a guided coach you'll use InterCity coaches, the TranzAlpine scenic train and a few shared shuttles, book your own dorm beds (many of the same hostels the tour uses), and self-book the headline activities — whale watching, Abel Tasman water taxi/kayak, glacier heli-hike, Milford Sound cruise and the Queenstown bungy. Costs are rough per-person estimates in GBP at budget backpacker rates; add your own flights and travel insurance.
Day-by-day
Arrive Christchurch — meet-yourself night out
Christchurch
Land at Christchurch Airport and take the Purple Line / Metro bus into the city centre (about NZ$5-9, 30-40 mins) or a rideshare (~NZ$30-40). Check into a central hostel dorm near Hereford Street — Hotel Give is the hostel the tour uses and is a good, cheap base. Spend the afternoon wandering the Botanic Gardens (free), the Transitional Cathedral and the Riverside Market for dinner. If you want the social element of the group tour, book into a hostel with a bar and join their evening quiz or shared dinner.
🚌Airport bus into city (~£3-5)
🛏Dorm bed, Hotel Give or similar central Christchurch hostel (~£18-22)
- →Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park walk
- →Riverside Market dinner
- →Hostel social night
Christchurch to Kaikoura — seals and a farm stop
Kaikoura
Take the InterCity coach north to Kaikoura (about 2.5-3 hrs, ~NZ$30-45 booked in advance). Drop bags at Dusky Lodge (the tour's own hostel). In the afternoon walk the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway from town to Point Kean to see wild fur seals for free — this is the tour's included seal viewing without a guide. If you want the farm experience, Tawanui Farm offers farm tours and animal feeding direct (book ahead, roughly NZ$40-60).
🚌InterCity coach Christchurch–Kaikoura (~£15-23)
🛏Dorm bed, Dusky Lodge (~£22-28)
- →Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway and seal colony
- →Optional Tawanui Farm tour with animal feeding
- →Sunset at Kaikoura beach
Kaikoura: whales or dolphins, then on to Nelson
Kaikoura / Nelson
Book whale watching with Whale Watch Kaikoura (about NZ$175, book ahead — weather dependent) or swim with wild dusky dolphins with Dolphin Encounter (about NZ$200). If you'd rather save money, the Kaikoura coast is excellent for a coastal walk and cheap fish and chips. Late afternoon take the InterCity coach on to Nelson (about 2.5-3 hrs, ~NZ$30-40), then a short local bus or shuttle to Bethany Park in Kaiteriteri/the Abel Tasman gateway. Note: the tour stops at a Marlborough winery en route; you can replicate this with a Marlborough wine tour from Picton/Kaikoura or simply pick up local Marlborough wine at a Nelson bottle store for a fraction of the price.
🚌InterCity Kaikoura–Nelson (~£15-20) plus local bus/shuttle (~£5)
🛏Dorm bed, Bethany Park or similar Kaiteriteri hostel (~£20-25)
- →Whale watching or dolphin swimming (self-booked)
- →Optional Marlborough wine tasting en route
- →Coastal walk
Abel Tasman National Park — kayak or hike
Abel Tasman / Kaiteriteri
The park's Coastal Track can be done independently: book the Aqua Taxi water taxi from Kaiteriteri into the park (about NZ$50-90 one-way depending on distance) and walk back, or hire a kayak with a guided day trip option from Kaiteriteri (about NZ$150-200 for a full-day guided kayak, less for self-hire). A great budget version: water taxi to Anchorage, walk to Bark Bay and back (5-6 hrs) with a packed lunch. Book direct with Abel Tasman AquaTaxi or Wilsons — no tour group needed.
🚌Local shuttle to Kaiteriteri + water taxi (~£25-40)
🛏Dorm bed, Bethany Park (~£20-25)
- →Aqua Taxi into Abel Tasman National Park
- →Coastal Track hike (Anchorage–Bark Bay)
- →Optional sea kayaking
Nelson Lakes and on to Hanmer Springs
Hanmer Springs
This is the trickiest transport day to do alone. Best approach: take the InterCity coach Nelson to Christchurch (about 6 hrs) and get off at or change for Hanmer Springs via the Hanmer Connection shuttle from Christchurch (about 2 hrs, ~NZ$40). Alternatively break the journey with an overnight in Nelson or St Arnaud (Nelson Lakes) and continue the next day. If time allows, stop in St Arnaud for a walk to Lake Rotoiti (free, 1-2 hrs) — this replaces the tour's Nelson Lakes stop.
🚌InterCity Nelson–Christchurch (~£25-35) + Hanmer Connection shuttle (~£18-22)
🛏Dorm bed in Hanmer Springs (~£22-28)
- →Lake Rotoiti walk at Nelson Lakes (if stopping)
- →Hanmer Springs village wander
Hanmer Springs thermal pools and forest trails
Hanmer Springs
Buy a day pass to Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa direct (about NZ$35-40 for the main pools, extra for the hydroslides) — the same inclusion as the tour but self-booked. In the morning or afternoon hike the Heritage Forest lookout trail (1-1.5 hrs, free) or walk the Waiau Ferry Bridge and gorge for whitewater views. Cheap dinner from the village bakery or supermarket.
🚌On foot
🛏Dorm bed in Hanmer Springs (~£22-28)
- →Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools day pass
- →Heritage Forest lookout trail
- →Waiau Gorge walk
Iron Ridge Quarry Sculpture Park and back to Christchurch
Christchurch
Visit Iron Ridge Quarry Sculpture Park just outside Hanmer Springs (small entry fee, roughly NZ$15-20, check opening days; it's a short taxi or bike ride from the village). Then take the Hanmer Connection shuttle back to Christchurch (about 2 hrs) and re-check into Hotel Give. Evening stroll along the Avon River and dinner at the Little High Eatery.

Christchurch street art and city day
Christchurch
Christchurch's street art is best done on a self-led walk: download a free mural map or use the Watch This Space app, and wander the central city — the Blank Space murals, New Regent Street and the Cardboard Cathedral. If you want a guide, book a Christchurch street art walking tour direct with a local operator (about NZ$40-50). Afternoon: Canterbury Museum (free entry, donation) and the Quake City exhibition if it's your thing.
🚌On foot / local bus (~£3)
🛏Dorm bed, Hotel Give (~£18-22)
- →Self-led street art walk
- →New Regent Street and Cardboard Cathedral
- →Canterbury Museum
TranzAlpine to Arthur's Pass, then to Franz Josef
Franz Josef
Take the TranzAlpine scenic train from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass (about 2.5 hrs, ~NZ$60-90 booked early) — one of the world's best train journeys and the natural self-launched replacement for the guided coach. Hop off at Arthur's Pass for the short walk to Devil's Punchbowl Falls (1 hr return, free) and the Castle Hill rock formations if you detour by shuttle. Continue with InterCity from Arthur's Pass to Greymouth and down the coast to Franz Josef (about 4-5 hrs, ~NZ$50-70). Check into Rainforest Retreat.

- →Optional Castle Hill stop
Franz Josef Glacier heli-hike
Franz Josef
Book the Franz Josef Glacier heli-hike direct with the glacier guiding companies (about NZ$450-550 — the big optional splurge, weather dependent; budget alternatives: the free valley walk to the glacier terminal face, about 1.5 hrs return, or a cheaper glacier valley guided walk at ~NZ$90-120). Afternoon soak at the Franz Josef hot pools (about NZ$30) or hike the Callery Gorge or Tatare Tunnels tracks.

Then take the InterCity coach or the cheaper local Orbus/Ritchies service to Queenstown (about 1.5 hrs, ~NZ$20-35). On the way, stop at the Kawarau Bridge Bungy — self-book the original 43m bungy direct (about NZ$205) or just watch for free. Check into Nomads Queenstown for the social backpacker vibe.

Lake Tekapo and Church of the Good Shepherd, back to Christchurch
Christchurch
Take the InterCity coach from Queenstown to Christchurch (about 8 hrs) — book a service that stops at Lake Tekapo, or better, break it: get off at Tekapo, walk 15 mins to the Church of the Good Shepherd and lakeshore (free), then take a later coach on through Burkes Pass and the Mackenzie Country to Christchurch, arriving around 17:00-18:00. This is a beautiful scenic route and the perfect free finale. If you're flying out the same night, check timings carefully and consider overnighting in Christchurch.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Southern Kiwi: Self-Launched South Island Road & Bus Adventure cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,370 per person for 15 days in New Zealand South Island. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Kiwi Experience?+
Yes — Kiwi Experience charges around £1,680 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,370 — a saving of roughly £310 (18%) per person.
How long is the New Zealand South Island trip?+
This itinerary runs 15 days, covering 15 day-by-day stops through New Zealand South Island.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, hiking, backpacker trip through New Zealand South Island, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
