Chamaeleon charges £5,600

£2,010saved per person (36%)

No-markup version: ~£3,590 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched overland route covering the same ground as Chamaeleon's 21-day Limpopo adventure: Windhoek to Etosha, the Okavango and Caprivi Strip, Chobe and Victoria Falls, the Makgadikgadi salt pans, Mapungubwe and finally Kruger plus the Panorama Route to Johannesburg. Instead of a guided coach-and-group departure, you'll piece it together with the excellent Shuttle Africa / Intercape-style shuttle network, shared 4x4 safari transfers between Kasane and Vic Falls, self-booked game drives with local lodges via GetYourGuide, and backpacker lodges and guesthouses throughout. Budget roughly £2,400-2,900 for land costs in-country (excluding international flights), against the operator's US$7,143 pp including a Frankfurt return flight. Note the operator sells this as German-guided with minimum 2 travellers; solo travellers will be joining shared shuttles and small-group safaris rather than a private convoy. All figures are approximate backpacker/budget-traveller estimates and should be re-checked at time of booking.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Windhoek

Windhoek, Namibia

Land at Hosea Kutako International (WDH). Take the official airport shuttle into town (~NAD 350 / £15) or share a taxi. Settle into a backpacker hostel in the city centre, pick up a Namibian SIM (MTC or TN Mobile, cheap data), and stock up on water and snacks. Evening walk to Christ Church and the Ink Palace (Tintenpalast) area, then a braai dinner at the hostel.

Windhoek to Onjala / Ondekaremba (wildlife & stargazing)

Arrange a guided walking safari and an afternoon open-vehicle game drive directly with the lodge (usually ~NAD 500-700 pp) — this replicates the tour's Onjala inclusions without the group structure. Night sky here is superb; bring a red torch and use a star app rather than paying for an observatory session.

Check into a lodge just outside the southern gate. Afternoon: self-drive or lodge-arranged sundowner drive into Etosha; the camp waterholes at Okaukuejo are famous for night-time rhino sightings.

If you're travelling solo, ask to join a shared vehicle to cut costs. Focus on Gemsbokvlakte, Olifantsbad and Nebrownii waterholes. Frequently asked questions

How much does Limpopo & Southern Africa Overland Adventure — Self-Launched 21-Day Version cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £3,590 per person for 21 days in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe & South Africa. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Chamaeleon?+

Yes — Chamaeleon charges around £5,600 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £3,590 — a saving of roughly £2,010 (36%) per person.

How long is the Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe & South Africa trip?+

This itinerary runs 21 days, covering 21 day-by-day stops through Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe & South Africa.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, road-trip trip through Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe & South Africa, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
