G Adventures charges £1,050

£65saved per person (6%)

No-markup version: ~£985 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 9-day Windhoek-to-Victoria Falls overland trip: Kalahari sands, an overnight mokoro and bush-camping excursion in the Okavango Delta, the baobabs of Nata, a Chobe River safari and the thundering mists of Victoria Falls. Instead of a Lando truck and a tour group, you'll use Intercape/mainline buses, shared minibuses and locally booked safari operators — roughly a third of the group-tour price while keeping the same big-ticket experiences. All costs are approximate per person in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Windhoek & first night out

Windhoek, Namibia

Land at Hosea Kutako International Airport and take the official shared shuttle (about N$250-300 / £11-13) or a shared taxi into the city centre — roughly 45 minutes. Check into a backpacker hostel in the Klein Windhoek or city-centre area. Spend the afternoon wandering Independence Avenue, the Christuskirche and the craft market at Post Street Mall, then join your hostel's braai or head to a lively local bar for a cold Windhoek Lager and a kapana (grilled beef) plate. Budget N$90 for the Namibia visa-on-arrival fee if applicable to your nationality, and use the evening to confirm tomorrow's bus ticket — Intercape and mainline coaches run Windhoek to Ghanzi/Maun several times a week; book online in advance.

🚌Airport shuttle ~£12; local walking/taxi

🛏Backpacker hostel dorm, Windhoek (£12-16)

  • →City orientation walk
  • →Craft market & Christuskirche
  • →Hostel braai / local bar night

Day 2

Cross into Botswana to the Kalahari

D'kar / Ghanzi, Botswana

Take the early Intercape or mainline coach east from Windhoek to Ghanzi (about 5-6 hours, roughly N$300-350 / £13-16) — the bus handles the Buitepos/Mamuno border formalities, where you pay the Botswana tourism levy (US$30 / ~£24) and get your entry stamp. From Ghanzi, a shared minibus or local taxi covers the last 40 minutes to D'kar. Stay at a community-run San/Bushman camp or guesthouse in the village, where you can arrange a guided bush walk with San trackers — learning about medicinal plants, animal tracking and fire-making. Dinner is usually a communal braai at the camp.

🛏San community guesthouse or camp, D'kar (£12-18)

Day 3

Into Maun — gateway to the Delta

Maun, Botswana

Back to Ghanzi by shared minibus, then catch the Ghanzi-Maun coach or a shared combi (total roughly 6-7 hours, ~£14-18). Maun is a dusty, easy-going safari town on the Thamalakane River — check into a backpacker lodge with a pool. The afternoon is yours: relax by the water, or book a scenic helicopter or small-plane flight over the Delta (from about US$180 / £140 through local operators — book the day before at your lodge). In the evening, choose a Delta operator in town for tomorrow's overnight mokoro trip (typical rate US$150-200 / £115-155 per person including 4x4 transfer, mokoro poler, guide, meals and camping gear); confirm your drop-off at the Mokoro station early.

Day 4

Mokoro & bush camping in the Okavango Delta

Okavango Delta, Botswana

An early 4x4 transfer from Maun to the edge of the Delta (about an hour), then you're poled into the reeds in a traditional mokoro dugout canoe by a local guide. Spend the afternoon birdwatching from the canoe — herons, kingfishers, fish eagles — then walk with your guide across the floodplain tracking elephant, zebra and giraffe on foot. Your operator sets up dome tents on an island; dinner is cooked over the fire and the night sky is genuinely extraordinary. Pack a small overnight bag: headtorch, water, sun cream, warm layer and a sleeping bag or liner. This is the bucket-list centrepiece of the trip.

🚌4x4 transfer + mokoro (included in excursion)

🛏Bush camping in the Delta (tents provided by operator) — included in excursion

  • →Mokoro canoe ride
  • →Guided wildlife walk & tracking
  • →Campfire dinner under the stars

Day 5

Sunrise in the Delta, then baobabs of Nata

Nata, Botswana

Wake for sunrise over the floodplain and take one last guided walk before being poled back and driven to Maun (allow time for a shower at the lodge and to collect left luggage). In the afternoon, catch the northbound Maun-Nata bus or shared combi (about 3-4 hours, roughly BWP 120-160 / £9-12). Nata is famous for its ancient baobab cluster at Nata Bird Sanctuary — a 20-minute drive from town, worth a short guided or self-driven visit for photos, especially at golden hour. Settle into a lodge or campsite on the edge of the pans and enjoy a proper shower and a pool.

🚌Mokoro back to Maun + Maun-Nata bus ~£11

🛏Lodge or campsite, Nata (£14-20)

  • →Delta sunrise walk
  • →Baobab tree photo stop at Nata Bird Sanctuary
  • →Makgadikgadi Pans edge

Day 6

North to Kasane on the Chobe River

Kasane, Botswana

Take the northbound bus or shared combi from Nata to Kasane (about 4 hours, roughly BWP 150 / £11) — a beautiful run through teak woodland and elephant country. Check into a riverside backpacker lodge or campsite in Kasane and book a sunset boat cruise on the Chobe River for this afternoon (about US$45 / £35 direct with a local operator, or pre-book on Klook/GetYourGuide). The cruise drifts past huge herds of elephant coming down to drink, plus hippo, buffalo and crocodile — the best value wildlife experience in southern Africa. Dinner at the lodge; if you want a Chobe game drive too, book it for early tomorrow at the same time.

🚌Nata-Kasane bus/combi ~£11

🛏Riverside backpacker lodge/campsite, Kasane (£14-20)

  • →Chobe River sunset cruise
  • →Elephant & hippo spotting
~£80
Day 7

Chobe game drive & cross into Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Optional early-morning open-vehicle game drive in Chobe National Park (about US$45-60 / £35-47 through a local operator) — Chobe has one of the largest elephant populations on earth. Then take a shared taxi to Kazungula and cross the border into Zimbabwe on foot (Zimbabwe visa/VOA US$30-50 depending on nationality; the KAZA Univisa covering Zimbabwe and Zambia is about US$50). A shared taxi from the border to Victoria Falls town is roughly US$10-15. Check into a backpacker lodge in Victoria Falls and, if you want the community lunch experience, contact the Lusumpuko Women's Club directly to arrange a home-cooked traditional meal (about US$15).

🚌Shared taxi to Kazungula ~£4; border crossing on foot; shared taxi to Vic Falls ~£10

🛏Backpacker lodge (dorm or twin), Victoria Falls (£15-22)

  • →Chobe National Park game drive (optional)

Day 8

Victoria Falls — mists, rafting or bungee

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Buy your Victoria Falls National Park entry ticket at the gate (US$50 / ~£39 for foreigners) and walk the rainforest trail along the Zimbabwean viewpoints — expect to get soaked and love it. In the afternoon pick your adrenaline level: whitewater rafting on the Zambezi (about US$120-140 / £95-110 with a local operator), the Zambezi bungee jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge (about US$168 / £130), or a 15-minute helicopter flight over the falls (about US$150-175 / £120-135). Book these the day before either direct with operators or via GetYourGuide. Finish with a sunset drink at a riverside bar.

Shared taxis run from Victoria Falls town to Victoria Falls Airport (about US$15-20 / £12-16, 25 minutes). If you're not ready to go home, buses and minibuses connect Victoria Falls to Bulawayo, Harare or back across the border to Kasane and Maun — and Livingstone in Zambia is just across the bridge if you want to add a few days.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Delta & Falls Eastbound: Self-Launched Baobabs & River Views cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £985 per person for 9 days in Namibia, Botswana & Zimbabwe. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,050 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £985 — a saving of roughly £65 (6%) per person.

How long is the Namibia, Botswana & Zimbabwe trip?+

This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Namibia, Botswana & Zimbabwe.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Namibia, Botswana & Zimbabwe, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
