A DIY version of Chameleon Safaris' 3-day Etosha Express: self-drive or shuttle from Windhoek to Etosha, two nights in park/Namutoni-area lodges, self-guided game drives in your own vehicle (Etosha's gravel loops are famously easy to drive solo), then the scenic Damaraland/Skeleton Coast run out to Swakopmund. You book your own accommodation, hire a car (or join a shared shuttle), and pick up self-catering supplies en route — the wildlife, waterhole evenings and landscapes are exactly the same. Costs below assume two travellers sharing a hire car and twin rooms; solo travellers add roughly £120–160 for single supplements or hop on a shared shuttle/camping safari instead.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Windhoek to Etosha National Park — self-drive game viewing

Windhoek → Okaukuejo, Etosha

Collect a hire car in Windhoek early (Budget/Sixt/Asco, ~£55–70/day for a small SUV with unlimited km) or catch the shared Intercape/local shuttle up the B1. Stock up at a Windhoek supermarket (Pick n Pay, Shoprite) — snacks, water, a coolbox and ice are essential; Etosha's shops are pricey and limited. Drive ~5.5–6 hours north via Otjiwarongo, where there's a good fuel stop and bakery lunch (~£7). Enter Etosha at Anderson Gate by mid-afternoon and drive the short loop roads to Okaukuejo, stopping at Nebrownii and Gemsbokvlakte waterholes on the way. Check in at Okaukuejo Camp (N$1,300–1,700/£55–70 twin; book via Namibia Wildlife Resorts well ahead), then spend sunset at the floodlit waterhole — rhino, elephant and lion often come in after dark. Self-cater braai/kitchen dinner or eat at the camp restaurant (~£12).

🚌Hire car from Windhoek, ~350 km on the B1 via Otjiwarongo; fuel ~£30

Day 2

Full day game driving across Etosha Pan

Etosha National Park (Okaukuejo → Halali → Namutoni)

Up at sunrise — the first two hours are the best game-viewing of the day. Drive the loops south of Okaukuejo (Rietfontein, Olifantsbad) then east along the Etosha Pan rim to Halali, stopping at every waterhole on the map. Lunch at Halali camp (or picnic at a designated site — don't leave the car elsewhere). Continue to the Pan viewpoint, then out via Von Lindequist Gate to Namutoni side. Overnight just outside the park at Etosha Village / Toshari Lodge or Etosha Safari Camp (~£50–70 twin; book direct or via Booking.com). Self-cater or take the lodge buffet (~£15). Buy a park entry permit at the gate: N$150/~£6 per person plus N$50 vehicle, valid for the day — multi-day permits available.

🚌Self-drive, ~180–220 km inside the park on gravel roads; fuel at Halali or Namutoni (~£25)

Day 3

Etosha to Swakopmund via Damaraland and the Skeleton Coast

Etosha → Damaraland → Brandberg → Henties Bay → Swakopmund

Leave early — this is a long driving day (~600 km, 7–8 hours). Head south-west via Outjo and Khorixas (fuel up at both), through Damaraland's dramatic scenery. Stop at roadside Himba, Herero and Damara craft stalls near the Brandberg turn-off — bring small notes and ask before photographing. Picnic lunch under Brandberg (Namibia's highest peak, 2,573 m). Continue to the coast via Uis and Henties Bay; detour the few km north to the Zeila shipwreck on the Skeleton Coast, then follow the coast road south into Swakopmund, arriving late afternoon. Drop the car at the Swakopmund depot (one-way hire Windhoek–Swakopmund adds ~£40–60) or keep it. Overnight in a Swakopmund guesthouse or backpackers (Chameleon Backpackers, Swakopmund Backpackers, or a guesthouse ~£25–35 pp).

Frequently asked questions

How much does 3 Day Etosha Express — Self-Launched Independent Safari (Windhoek to Swakopmund) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £560 per person for 3 days in Namibia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Chameleon Safaris Namibia?+

Yes — Chameleon Safaris Namibia charges around £1,080 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £560 — a saving of roughly £520 (48%) per person.

How long is the Namibia trip?+

This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Namibia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, road-trip trip through Namibia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
