Moroccan Best Tours charges £650

No-markup version: ~£195 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A DIY version of Moroccan Best Tours' private 3-day Marrakech–Sahara loop, rebuilt for independent travellers using shared grand taxis, CTM buses and locally booked desert-camp packages. You'll still cross the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka, walk Ait Ben Haddou, wander the Skoura and Tinghir palm oases, hike Todgha Gorges, and ride camels into Erg Chebbi for a night under the stars — just without the private vehicle and 4-star hotel markup. Costs are realistic budget-traveller estimates in GBP and will vary with season (spring/autumn is best; July–August desert heat is brutal). Book desert camps directly or via GetYourGuide/Klook a few days ahead, and always agree shared-taxi prices before departing.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley

Marrakech / Ait Ben Haddou / Dades Valley

Leave Marrakech early — shared grand taxis and minibuses (best booked the night before through your riad, ~£15-20 per person) run the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas, stopping at viewpoints. Alternatively, take a CTM/Supratours bus Marrakech→Ouarzazate (~£8, 4.5 hrs, book online) then a shared grand taxi to Ait Ben Haddou (~£4, 45 mins). Spend 1.5-2 hrs exploring the ksar on foot — entry to the kasbah granary is ~£2-3. Continue to Ouarzazate (or straight on), then follow the Road of 1001 Kasbahs through Skoura oasis and Kalaat M'Gouna (Valley of Roses, best in May) toward Dades. Overnight in Boumalne Dades or Dades Valley in a family-run guesthouse or budget hotel (many offer ~£15-25 B&B with valley views) and eat a tagine dinner locally.

🚌Shared grand taxi or minibus Marrakech→Ouarzazate (~£15-20 pp) or CTM bus (~£8) + shared taxi to Ait Ben Haddou (~£4) + shared taxi/minibus to Boumalne Dades (~£6-8)

🛏Family-run guesthouse or budget hotel in Boumalne Dades / Dades Valley (~£18 pp in a twin share)

  • →Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka viewpoints
  • →Explore Ait Ben Haddou UNESCO ksar (self-guided, granary entry ~£2-3)
  • →Ouarzazate film studios (optional, ~£5)
  • →Photo stops at Skoura palm oasis
  • →Valley of Roses at Kalaat M'Gouna
  • →Sunset over Dades Valley gorges
~£68
Day 2

Dades → Todgha Gorges → Tinghir → Erg Chebbi (Merzouga)

Todgha Gorges / Tinghir / Merzouga

After breakfast, take a shared grand taxi or local minibus to Tinghir (~£3-5, 1 hr) and spend an hour strolling the palm groves of the Tinghir oasis. Continue ~15 mins to Todgha Gorges for a walk between the cliffs (free; local guides ask ~£8-10 if you want one). Then catch the shared taxi/minibus onwards via Rissani to Merzouga (~£6-10, 2.5-3 hrs) — bargain hard and expect to change once. Arrive mid-afternoon and head to your pre-booked desert camp meeting point. Standard desert-camp packages (camel trek in at sunset, dinner with Gnawa drums under the stars, hearty breakfast, sunrise camel out) typically cost £30-55 pp booked directly with the camp, or via GetYourGuide/Klook. Sandboarding is usually free from the camp.

🚌Shared grand taxi/minibus Dades→Tinghir (~£4) + Todgha Gorges return (~£4) + Tinghir→Rissani→Merzouga (~£8)

Day 3

Sunrise in the Sahara → Marrakech

Merzouga / Marrakech

Wake before dawn for the camel ride back over the dunes as the sun rises, then a proper camp breakfast. Late morning, take a shared taxi to Rissani (~£3) and pick up the CTM/Supratours coach or a shared long-distance grand taxi back to Marrakech (~£12-18, 8-9 hrs via Ouarzazate) — the CTM bus is cheaper and more comfortable but only has a couple of daily departures, so check timetables and book a seat the day before if possible. If you want to break the drive, stop for an hour in Ouarzazate. Arrive Marrakech in the evening; a petit taxi from the bus station to the medina is ~£1-2. Riad or hostel bed in the medina ~£12-20.

🚌Camel ride included in camp package + shared taxi Merzouga→Rissani (~£3) + CTM/Supratours bus Rissani/Merzouga→Marrakech (~£12-15) or shared grand taxi (~£18)

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Sahara Desert Escape: Marrakech to Erg Chebbi in 3 Days cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £195 per person for 3 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Moroccan Best Tours?+

Yes — Moroccan Best Tours charges around £650 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £195 — a saving of roughly £455 (70%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, budget trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
