Self-Launched Morocco: Ancient Souks to the Sahara
9 days · Morocco
G Adventures charges £1,068
No-markup version: ~£612 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched 9-day loop out of Marrakech through the High Atlas to the Sahara dunes at Erg Chebbi and back via the kasbahs of Aït Ben Haddou. Follows the same route as the G Adventures National Geographic Family Journey, but booked independently: shared grand taxis and CTM/Supratours buses instead of a private minivan, riads and desert guesthouses instead of tour hotels, and self-booked cooking classes, henna sessions and 4x4 dune trips. Budget figures are per person and approximate — flights not included.
Day-by-day
Arrive Marrakech — medina orientation
Marrakech
Land at RAK and take bus 19 or a petit taxi (~£4-6) to a riad inside the medina — a courtyard riad is the budget equivalent of the tour hotel and much better value (approx £30-40 for a double, ~£18pp if sharing). Spend the evening getting your bearings: walk through the souks towards Djemaa el Fna, watch the storytellers, Gnaoua drummers and food stalls fire up at dusk, and eat cheap at a stall or a local grill (harira, brochettes, bread ~£5). Pre-book nothing today — buy a Moroccan SIM/eSIM at the airport (~£8 for data) for maps and bus apps.

🛏Medina riad or guesthouse, double ~£35/night (~£18pp)

Marrakech to Ouarzazate via Tizi n'Tichka
Ouarzazate
Take the CTM or Supratours bus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate (~£10-12, 4-5 hrs) — book online a day ahead, morning departure preferred. The road climbs over the Tizi n'Tichka pass with red slopes and Berber villages; stop for lunch at a roadside café or eat in Ouarzazate on arrival. In the afternoon visit Atlas Film Studios independently (entry ~£7) — the studio where Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator scenes were shot — and optionally the Taourirt Kasbah (~£2). Ouarzazate is the 'gateway to the Sahara'.

Ouarzazate to Merzouga — desert arrival
Merzouga
This is the longest travel day. Take the morning CTM/Supratours bus towards Rissani or Erfoud (~£10-12, 5-6 hrs) and then a shared grand taxi or local transfer to Merzouga (~£3-5). Alternatively, many Merzouga desert camps and guesthouses offer a paid shared pickup from Rissani — ask when booking. Check into a guesthouse on the edge of Erg Chebbi, watch the dunes turn orange at sunset, and take a cheap Amazigh dinner at your guesthouse (~£6). Stargazing from the sand is free and better than any paid activity.

Merzouga — 4x4, fossils and Gnaoua music
Merzouga
Book a half-day shared 4x4 excursion through your guesthouse (~£25-30pp) to the fossil beds left by an ancient sea, the nomad families and a Khamlia village where Gnaoua musicians play — the same experiences the tour includes, but arranged locally and often cheaper. Afternoon free: swim, nap or walk the dunes. In the evening ask your guesthouse about a campfire and drumming session with local musicians (~£8-10pp, often thrown in free with dinner).

Dades Gorge
Travel back to Rissani/Erfoud and onwards by bus to Boumalne Dades (~£10-12), then a shared grand taxi up into the Dades Gorge (~£4-6). Alternatively, many travellers pair this leg with other guests at the guesthouse to split a grand taxi for around £20-25 per vehicle. Stay in a family-run guesthouse in the gorge (~£15-20pp). Afternoon: walk the valley, visit a Berber village for lunch and try 'Amazigh pizza' (a savoury flatbread topped with vegetables and cheese) at a village café (~£5).

Then travel back down to Boumalne and take a bus or shared taxi through the Ounila Valley towards Aït Ben Haddou (~£10-14 total). Check into a guesthouse facing the ksar (~£18-22pp) and spend late afternoon exploring the UNESCO-listed clay village on foot (free; small tips for the granary). In the evening join a hands-on tagine cooking class in the village — several family-run guesthouses and cafés offer these for £15-20pp including dinner. Book via GetYourGuide or directly with your guesthouse.

Aït Ben Haddou to Marrakech — henna and the square
Marrakech
Take the morning bus or shared grand taxi back over the High Atlas to Marrakech (~£8-12, 3.5-4 hrs). Check back into a medina riad. In the late afternoon book a henna session at a small cooperative or the Henna Art Café in the medina (~£8-12, cheaper than the tour's included workshop and just as good). Then wander Djemaa el Fna as it comes alive — snake charmers, musicians, juice stalls — and eat at the night food market (~£6).

Marrakech medina day — palaces, souks, farewell dinner
Marrakech
Do the medina independently in the morning: Bahia Palace (~£6), Saadian Tombs (~£6), the souks and the spice market — or join a 2-3 hour walking tour booked on GetYourGuide for ~£12-15pp if you want the historical context. Afternoon option: Jardin Majorelle and the YSL Museum (~£18-22 combined, pre-book online to skip queues — note the tour treats this as an optional extra too). Finish with a farewell dinner in a traditional riad courtyard (~£15) or a cheaper local restaurant.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched Morocco: Ancient Souks to the Sahara cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £612 per person for 9 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,068 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £612 — a saving of roughly £456 (43%) per person.
How long is the Morocco trip?+
This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Morocco.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, culture, foodie trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
