Self-Launched Morocco: Sahara Desert & Atlas Mountains – 8 Days

8 days · Morocco

Experience the best of Morocco independently — from the chaotic magic of Marrakech's Djemaa el-Fna, through the dramatic canyon walls of Todra Gorge, out to the vast golden dunes of the Sahara, and up into the crisp air of the Atlas Mountains. This self-launched route mirrors Intrepid Travel's popular 8-day Basix itinerary, swapping the group tour surcharge for local buses, shared taxis (grands taxis), self-booked riads and guesthouses, and independently arranged camel treks and hikes. All the bucket-list moments — camel ride at sunset, sleeping under Sahara stars, mint tea in Ait Benhaddou, hiking to Imlil — at a fraction of the cost. Costs are approximate estimates per person based on budget/backpacker rates.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Marrakech – Medina Wandering & Djemaa el-Fna

Marrakech

Arrive at Marrakech Menara Airport and take a taxi or the No. 19 bus (~£0.50) into the medina. Check into your riad or hostel near Djemaa el-Fna — booking a few nights ahead on Hostelworld or Booking.com is recommended. Spend the evening getting gloriously lost in Djemaa el-Fna Square: snake charmers, storytellers, street food stalls and the hypnotic smell of grilling kebabs. Load up on eggplant fritters and harira soup for under £3. Head to a rooftop café overlooking the square for mint tea as the sun goes down — Café de France or Nomad are popular free-entry spots.

🚌Airport taxi to medina ~£6, or bus No. 19 ~£0.50

🛏Hostel or budget riad in the medina (e.g. Equity Point Marrakech, Riad Kenza, or similar) — ~£12-18/night

  • Explore Djemaa el-Fna Square (free)
  • Wander the spice souks and bazaars of the medina (free)
  • Street food dinner at the night market stalls (~£3-5)
  • Rooftop mint tea with a view at Café de France or Nomad (~£1-2)
~£35
Day 2

Marrakech to Todra Gorge – Epic Cross-Country Journey

Todra Gorge

An early breakfast at your riad (usually included), then make your way to the CTM or Supratours bus station near Bab Doukkala for the long but scenic journey east. Take a CTM bus to Ouarzazate (~4 hrs, £7-10), then a shared grand taxi onward to Tinghir (~2 hrs, £5-7), from where another short grand taxi or local minibus drops you at Todra Gorge (~30 mins, £1-2). It's a long travel day (~8-10 hrs total) but the landscape transforms dramatically as you cross the High Atlas. Arrive in the gorge late afternoon, check into a guesthouse in the valley, take a brief stroll along the canyon base as the last light hits the towering 300m rock walls, and enjoy a set-menu dinner at your guesthouse (~£5-8).

🚌CTM bus + grand taxi combination, total ~£13-19 per person

🛏Guesthouse or auberge in Todra Gorge (e.g. Auberge Le Festival, La Belle Étoile) — ~£10-15/night, breakfast often included

  • CTM/Supratours bus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate (~£7-10)
  • Grand taxi Ouarzazate to Tinghir (~£5-7)
  • Grand taxi/minibus Tinghir to Todra Gorge (~£1-2)

Day 3

Todra Valley Hike, Local Lunch & Onward to the Sahara

Todra Gorge / Merzouga (Sahara)

Rise early for a self-guided hike through the palm-lined Todra Valley (the gorge narrows to just 10m wide in places — stunning). Walk north from the gorge entrance for 2-3 hours at a relaxed pace — no guide needed, the path is clear and well-trodden. Arrange in advance (via your guesthouse or apps like GetYourGuide) a home-lunch visit with a local Berber family in the valley — these authentic experiences cost around £8-12pp and include dates, nuts, tea and a tagine. In the afternoon, arrange a shared grand taxi or join a group transfer (bookable at the guesthouse reception) toward Merzouga and the Erfoud area (~3.5-4 hrs, ~£12-15). On arrival at the dune edge, meet your pre-booked camel handler (book via GetYourGuide, Klook, or directly at your desert camp) for a sunset camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes and overnight at a desert camp.

🚌Shared grand taxi Tinghir/Todra to Merzouga ~£12-15pp

🛏Desert camp in Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga (e.g. Sahara Sky Camp, Bivouac Le Ciel) — typically £20-30pp including dinner, breakfast and camel ride

  • Self-guided hike through Todra Gorge and Valley (free)
  • Home-cooked Berber lunch with local family (~£8-12, bookable via guesthouse)
  • Shared grand taxi / group transfer to Merzouga Sahara (~£12-15)
  • Sunset camel ride into Erg Chebbi dunes (included with most desert camp bookings, or ~£15-20 standalone via GetYourGuide)
  • Overnight desert camp under the stars
~£65
Day 4

Sahara Sunrise, Ait Benhaddou & Tawesna Tea House

Merzouga / Ait Benhaddou

Set your alarm for pre-dawn and climb the nearest dune on foot to watch the Sahara sunrise — one of the most jaw-dropping sights on earth and completely free. Return to camp for breakfast, then arrange onward transport. Take a shared grand taxi or local transfer northwest toward Ouarzazate (~3-4 hrs, ~£12-15), stopping at Ait Benhaddou along the way. Visit the Tawesna Women's Association teahouse independently — it's easy to find on the road into Ait Benhaddou and a donation/small purchase directly supports women's economic inclusion in the village (mint tea ~£1-2). Then explore the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Benhaddou: climb through the mud-brick alleyways to the hilltop fortress for panoramic views. Recognised from Game of Thrones and Gladiator. Stay the night in a guesthouse just outside the walls.

🚌Shared grand taxi Merzouga–Ouarzazate–Ait Benhaddou ~£12-15pp

🛏Guesthouse near Ait Benhaddou walls (e.g. Dar Mouna, Riad Maktoub) — ~£12-18/night

  • Pre-dawn sand dune climb for Sahara sunrise (free)
  • Shared grand taxi Merzouga to Ait Benhaddou via Ouarzazate (~£12-15)

Day 5

Ait Benhaddou to Imlil & Hike to Aroumd Village

Imlil / Aroumd, High Atlas Mountains

After breakfast, take a grand taxi or shared transfer from Ait Benhaddou to Marrakech (~2.5 hrs, ~£8-10), then connect to Imlil by local minibus or grand taxi from Marrakech's Bab Ghmat taxi stand (~1.5 hrs, ~£5-7). Imlil sits at 1,740m at the foot of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. From the village, follow the well-marked trail to the mountain hamlet of Aroumd (~40 min walk, 200m ascent) — no guide needed in good weather, though a local guide from Imlil can be hired for ~£15-20 if preferred. Book a homestay or local gite in Aroumd directly or via booking platforms. The Amazigh families here are famously hospitable — your accommodation typically includes a home-cooked dinner and breakfast.

🚌Grand taxi + minibus combination ~£13-17pp total

🛏Family-run gite or homestay in Aroumd village (e.g. Gite Toubkal, Dar Adrar) — ~£15-22/night including dinner and breakfast

Day 6

Full Day Hike in the Atlas Mountains – Imlil Waterfall & Peaks

Aroumd / Imlil, High Atlas Mountains

A full rest-and-explore day in the Atlas Mountains. After a home-cooked breakfast, set out on a self-guided day hike from Aroumd back through Imlil and up toward the Imlil waterfall — easily reached within 1.5-2 hrs. The trails are marked and the scenery — terraced Berber villages, walnut groves, rocky peaks — is spectacular. Pack a picnic lunch from the village store (bread, olives, fruit, cheese — ~£2-3). Walk at your own pace and return to your gite by mid-afternoon for a relaxed evening. A group dinner is typically provided at the gite. This is genuinely one of the most peaceful, crowd-free hiking areas in all of Morocco.

  • Self-guided day hike to Imlil waterfall and surrounding peaks (~4 hrs, ~10km, free)

Return to Marrakech – Souks, Bahia Palace & Final Night Out

Marrakech

After a final mountain breakfast, walk back down to Imlil and take a grand taxi or minibus back to Marrakech (~1.5-2 hrs, ~£5-7). Check back into your medina riad or hostel and spend the afternoon exploring freely. Visit the stunning Bahia Palace (~£2 entry) — a 19th-century mansion with ornate painted ceilings and beautiful courtyards. Stroll through the Ben Youssef Medersa (£3 entry), or browse the leather tanneries from a rooftop vantage point in the souks. In the evening, make your way back to Djemaa el-Fna for your final night — the square hits differently when you know it's your last time. Grab a rooftop table and soak it all in.

If your flight is later in the day, use the morning for any last-minute souvenir shopping in the souks (bargain hard — first price is never the final price!), or treat yourself to a traditional hammam scrub at a local hammam like Hammam Dar el-Bacha (~£5-8 for locals' hammam entry). Alternatively, book a tajine cookery class via GetYourGuide (~£30-40) and learn to recreate your favourite Moroccan meal at home. Head to the airport by taxi (~£6) or airport bus.
