A self-launched version of Intrepid's 7-day Mount Toubkal trek: two nights in a Marrakech riad, shared taxi into the High Atlas, acclimatisation hiking around Aroumd, then the classic two-stage ascent to the 4,167m summit with a local mountain guide from Imlil's official guide bureau. Costs are approximate backpacker/mid-budget estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Marrakech — medina wander and Djemaa el-Fna

Marrakech

Fly into Marrakech Menara (RAK), take bus 19 or a petit taxi (~£3-4) to the medina and check into a riad or hostel in the Mellah/Derb area (book via Hostelworld or Booking.com, £15-25 for a private en-suite budget room, £8-12 dorm). Spend the afternoon getting lost in the souks, then head to Djemaa el-Fna at dusk for the food stalls, storytellers and musicians. Stock up on snacks, water purification tablets and cash — ATMs in Imlil are unreliable.

🛏Riad or hostel in the Marrakech medina

  • →Medina and souk orientation walk (self-guided, free)
  • →Djemaa el-Fna square at sunset (free)

Day 2

Marrakech to Aroumd via Imlil

Aroumd (High Atlas)

Rise early and catch a shared grand taxi from Marrakech's Bab Doukkala or Bab er-Rob area to Imlil (~£6-8 pp, 1.5-2 hrs; ask your riad to arrange or use the CTM/Supratours bus to Asni then a local taxi). Stop for mint tea and bread at Tahanaoute market if you time it right. From Imlil village, walk the gentle 45-minute trail up to Aroumd (1,950m) where you'll stay two nights in a mountain gîte. Book through your gîte or the Imlil guide bureau; many owners collect you from Imlil.

Acclimatisation hike above Aroumd

Aroumd (High Atlas)

A rest-and-acclimatise day essential for altitude. Walk unaccompanied or hire a local guide (£15-20/day through the Imlil bureau) on one of the many half-day loops from Aroumd — the Tizi n'Tacheddirt direction to ~2,500m or up towards Tizi Mzik. Keep the pace slow, drink constantly, and be back for a long tagine lunch. Evening in the gîte with the family, learning walnut and mint-tea protocol.

🚌On foot

Aroumd to Toubkal Refuges (base camp)

Trek out of Aroumd with a licensed mountain guide you've booked in advance through the Bureau des Guides Imlil (~£60-90/day, covers up to 6 people) and a muleteer for bags (~£15/day). Follow the valley past Sidi Chamarouch shrine, where you commonly pay a small local fee (~£1-2) and should not photograph the shrine. Climb steadily to the Les Mouflons / CAF refuges at 3,207m (~5-6 hrs). Book dorm beds ahead in May–September (Les Mouflons ~£15-20 half-board; cheaper camping mattress option available). Early dinner, hydration, sleep early for the summit push.

Summit around 8-8.30am for views across the Anti-Atlas and towards the Sahara on clear days. Descend to the refuges, collect your bags, then continue down to Aroumd (~10-11 hrs total, or take the shortcut via the Chamarouch valley). Celebration tagine and a very early night.

Check back into your riad, then spend the afternoon on your own handheld medina walk: Bahia Palace (book or queue; ~£5), the mellah, and the Saadian Tombs. In the evening treat yourself to a traditional hammam + scrub (local hammams £3-5, tourist hammams £20-35) and a tanjia or grilled fish dinner in the medina (BYO bread is normal — many locals bring their tagine to the bakery).

If you've got a later flight, the Jardin Majorelle/YSL Museum (£10-13 combined) or Bahia's neighbour, the ruined El Badi Palace (£6), are good final stops.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Mount Toubkal Trek — Self-Launched, Independently Booked cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £262 per person for 7 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Intrepid Travel?+

Yes — Intrepid Travel charges around £730 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £262 — a saving of roughly £468 (64%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, budget trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
