Morocco Northern Discovery — Self-Launched
7 days · Morocco
G Adventures charges £649
No-markup version: ~£445 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A DIY version of the classic 7-day northern Morocco run from Tangier to Casablanca, swapping the private minivan and tour leader for CTM/Supratours coaches and local grands taxis. You'll still tick off Tangier's old town, UNESCO-listed Tetouan, the blue streets of Chefchaouen, a Rif Mountains walk and farm lunch, the Fes medina, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, Meknes and Casablanca — just booked yourself, at roughly a third of the operator's sale price. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget-traveller estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.
Day-by-day
Arrive Tangier — old town orientation
Tangier
Fly or ferry into Tangier (ferries from Tarifa, Spain take ~1hr and cost around £30-40). Check into a medina-area guesthouse or hostel. In the late afternoon do a self-guided loop of the Old Town: the Kasbah, the Petit Socco, the Grand Socco, and the terrace at Café Hafa for mint tea over the Strait of Gibraltar. Grab dinner at a local grill house for tagine or brochettes (~£6-8).
🚌Airport taxi to medina ~£6-8 (agree the price first); everything else on foot
🛏Guesthouse/hostel in the Tangier medina (~£18-25/night)
- →Self-guided Tangier medina and Kasbah walk
- →Café Hafa sunset tea
Tangier → Tetouan → Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen
Take an early CTM or Supratours bus from Tangier to Tetouan (~1hr, around £4-5). Spend 2-3 hours walking El Feddan Square, the Mellah and the UNESCO-listed Tetouan medina — an easy, compact old town to explore independently, and far quieter than Fes. Then take a shared grand taxi or local bus onward to Chefchaouen (~1.5hrs, £4-6). In the late afternoon wander the blue lanes of the medina and climb to the Spanish Mosque for the classic sunset view over the town.
🚌CTM/Supratours bus Tangier–Tetouan ~£4.50; shared taxi or bus Tetouan–Chefchaouen ~£5
🛏Riad-style guesthouse in the Chefchaouen medina (~£18-25)

Rif Mountains walk & farm lunch → Fes
Fes
Book a half-day guided Rif Mountains hike with a local guide through your guesthouse or a local agency (around £20-30 including a farm visit and home-cooked lunch). The walk leads to a village farm where you make goat cheese with a family — a genuinely local experience that most day-trippers miss. Back in town by mid-afternoon, catch a bus to Fes (~4hrs, £8-10) or, if you want to break the journey, hop off at Ouazzane to see its mint-green medina. Arrive Fes in the evening and eat near Bab Boujloud.
🚌Local bus or CTM Chefchaouen–Fes ~£9; Ouazzane stop adds ~£2
🛏Guesthouse/riad in the Fes medina (~£20-28)

Fes medina deep dive
Fes
Hire a licensed local medina guide for a half day (around £25-35 for the group, or £15-20 if you join a shared small-group walk booked via GetYourGuide) — with 9,000 streets you'll get far more out of it than solo wandering. Cover the Bou Inania madrasa, the Nejjarine fountain, the souks and the Chouara tanneries (small entry tips expected). Lunch on your own in the medina (~£5-7). In the evening book a Moroccan cooking class or simply eat pastilla at a mid-range local restaurant (~£10-12).
🚌All on foot inside the medina; petit taxi to/from the gates ~£1-2
🛏Guesthouse/riad in the Fes medina (~£20-28)
- →Guided Fes medina tour
- →Tanneries visit

Fes → Volubilis → Meknes → Casablanca
Casablanca
Take an early train or bus from Fes to Meknes (~1hr, £4-6). From Meknes, a shared grand taxi to Moulay Idriss/Volubilis costs around £3-4 each way — the Roman ruins of Volubilis are a UNESCO site with excellent mosaics (entry ~£5). Return to Meknes, see Bab Mansour, the granaries of Heri es-Souani and the souk, then take the train from Meknes to Casablanca (~3.5-4hrs, £10-14). Check in and have a relaxed dinner on the coast.
🚌Train Fes–Meknes ~£5; grand taxi Meknes–Volubilis return ~£4; ONCF train Meknes–Casablanca ~£12

Frequently asked questions
How much does Morocco Northern Discovery — Self-Launched cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £445 per person for 7 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £649 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £445 — a saving of roughly £204 (31%) per person.
How long is the Morocco trip?+
This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Morocco.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a culture, budget, backpacker trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
