A self-launched version of the classic 4-day Marrakech–Sahara–Marrakech loop, covering the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Aït Benhaddou, the Dades and Todgha gorges, and a night in a desert camp under the Erg Chebbi dunes. Instead of a private vehicle and driver, you piece it together with CTM/SUPRATOURS coaches, shared grand taxis and local minibuses — or, if you'd rather not juggle connections, book a shared 3-day desert tour seat via GetYourGuide and add the Ouarzazate film-studio day yourself. Costs assume shared hostel/guesthouse dorms or budget private rooms and the desert camp's standard tent.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka to Aït Benhaddou and Dades

Marrakech → Aït Benhaddou → Dades Valley

Start early at Marrakech's CTM or Supratours station. The coach to Ouarzazate takes roughly 4-4.5 hours and climbs the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) — sit on the right for the best views. Ask the driver to drop you at the Aït Benhaddou junction, then take a shared grand taxi or local minibus the last 20 minutes to the ksar. Spend 2-3 hours wandering the UNESCO-listed mud-brick village (entry to the granary viewpoint is around 20 MAD) and eat lunch in the village. Mid-afternoon, head back to Ouarzazate and pick up a shared taxi or minibus toward Boumalne Dades (around 2 hours, roughly 60-80 MAD per seat if shared), or a CTM evening service. Sleep in Boumalne Dades or Kelaat M'Gouna so you're already in the valley for sunrise. Note: most coaches don't run the Aït Benhaddou detour, so build in slack time and confirm the last shared taxi departure with your guesthouse.

🚌CTM/Supratours coach Marrakech–Ouarzazate ~£6-8; shared taxi Ouarzazate–Boumalne Dades ~£6; local minibus to Aït Benhaddou ~£1.50

🛏Budget guesthouse in Boumalne Dades or Kelaat M'Gouna (dorm or basic private room, ~£12)

  • →Coach over the Tizi n'Tichka pass
  • →Walk the Aït Benhaddou kasbah and ksar
  • →Skoura Oasis palmeraie stop en route
  • →Sunset over the Dades Valley
~£48
Day 2

Todgha Gorges, Berber village walk and into the dunes at Merzouga

Dades → Todgha Gorges → Merzouga

Get up early for the Dades Gorges hairpin viewpoints (a short local taxi or hitch from Boumalne). Then take a shared taxi or minibus east through Tinejdad to Tinghir (around 1.5 hours, ~40-60 MAD), where the Todgha Gorges rise 300 m on either side of the river — a 20-minute walk from town. Do the short riverside walk yourself or hire a local guide at the gorge mouth (100-150 MAD) for the Berber village path and mint tea. Continue by shared taxi/minibus via Erfoud and Rissani to Merzouga (roughly 2.5-3 hours). Most desert camps include a camel ride in at sunset, so arrange your camp pickup when you book; otherwise a 4x4 transfer into the dunes is around 200-300 MAD. Dinner and drumming at the camp.

🚌Shared taxi/minibus Dades–Tinghir ~£4; Tinghir–Merzouga ~£9; local taxi to Dades viewpoints ~£3

🛏Standard desert camp tent in Erg Chebbi (shared, with dinner and breakfast, ~£25 including camel ride)

Day 3

Erg Chebbi sunrise, then the long road to Ouarzazate

Merzouga → Rissani → Ouarzazate

Wake before dawn for the camel trek out of the dunes and sunrise over Erg Chebbi — most camps include this. After breakfast, shower and regroup in Merzouga village. See the Nkob palm oasis and the Draa Valley en route west. This is the longest transport day: either take the CTM coach Merzouga–Ouarzazate (check the timetable the day before; it can be a single daily service and sells out) or break the journey with a shared taxi to Rissani/Tazzarine and onward. Expect 5-6 hours total. Arrive Ouarzazate in the evening; the Taourirt Kasbah is worth a quick look at golden hour. If shared transport looks tight, a seat in a shared 3-day desert tour minibus (booked via GetYourGuide, ~£70-90 for the loop) is a low-stress fallback.

🚌CTM coach Merzouga–Ouarzazate ~£10-12, or shared taxis ~£12-15 split across legs

🛏Budget riad or hostel in Ouarzazate (~£15)

  • →Sunrise camel trek over Erg Chebbi
  • →Nkob Oasis stop
  • →Draa Valley drive
  • →Taourirt Kasbah exterior at sunset
~£62
Day 4

Atlas Film Studios, Telouet and back to Marrakech

Ouarzazate → Telouet → Marrakech

Morning at the Atlas Film Studios just outside Ouarzazate — entry is around 50-80 MAD and you can join a walk-in guided set tour on arrival (no advance booking needed). Then take a shared taxi or minibus north to Telouet (about 1 hour) to see the crumbling Glaoui Palace, a genuinely under-visited kasbah. From Telouet, shared taxis run over the Ounila Valley road to Aït Benhaddou and on to Ouarzazate, where you catch the afternoon CTM/Supratours coach back to Marrakech (arriving early evening). If the connections feel too fiddly, skip Telouet and take a direct coach back — it's the safer option for a solo traveller on a fixed schedule.

🚌Shared taxi Ouarzazate–Telouet ~£5; coach Ouarzazate–Marrakech ~£7-8

🛏Not included — own arrangement in Marrakech

  • →Atlas Film Studios tour
  • →Telouet Glaoui Palace
  • →Ounila Valley drive
  • →Coach back over the Tizi n'Tichka
~£30

Frequently asked questions

How much does Morocco Desert Loop: Marrakech, Todgha Gorges & Erg Chebbi by Local Transport cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £202 per person for 4 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Morocco Sahara Desert Travel?+

Yes — Morocco Sahara Desert Travel charges around £560 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £202 — a saving of roughly £358 (64%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, budget trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
