Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 9-day Morocco Active Adventure: mule trek and berber village hiking in the High Atlas around Ouirgane, the painted blue rocks of Tafraoute in the Anti-Atlas, a wild beach camp on the Atlantic coast near Sidi Kaouki, and windswept Essaouira. You'll do it with local buses and shared grand taxis instead of a private minivan, stay in riads, guesthouses and family-run gîtes, and book guides, bike hire and mule hire directly on the ground — for roughly two-thirds less than the group tour price.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Marrakech — medina orientation on foot

Marrakech

Fly into Marrakech Menara (RAK). Take bus no. 19 from outside the airport grounds to Jemaa el-Fna (~50 MAD / £4) or a petit taxi (~100 MAD if you haggle hard). Check into a riad or hostel in the medina. Spend the afternoon getting lost in the souks and walk the Djemaa el-Fna at dusk: juice stalls, storytellers, grilled skewer stands. Buy your bus ticket for tomorrow in advance at the CTM or Supratours office near Bab Doukkala.

🚌Airport bus no. 19 (~£4) or shared petit taxi (~£8 haggled)

🛏Medina riad or hostel dorm, Marrakech (~£18-25)

  • →Jemaa el-Fna square at sunset (free)
  • →Medina souk wander
  • →Koutoubia Gardens

Day 2

Marrakech → Ouirgane, mule trek into the hills

Ouirgane

Take a shared grand taxi or local bus (supratours/CTM services run several times daily) south to Ouirgane via Asni, ~1.5-2 hours (~60-80 MAD / £5-7). Ouirgane is a small Berber village in the High Atlas at around 1,000m. On arrival, arrange a mule and local guide through your guesthouse — the standard mule trek up to the Tasa Ouirgane plateau and back runs 2-3 hours and costs roughly 200-300 MAD per mule plus a guide tip. Settle in for a tagine dinner in the guesthouse.

🚌Shared grand taxi or local bus Marrakech → Ouirgane (~£6)

🛏Berber guesthouse / gîte in Ouirgane (~£15-20)

  • →Mule trek to Tasa Ouirgane (~£20-25 direct)
  • →Berber village walk
  • →Tagines at the gîte

Day 3

Atlas Mountain hike: olive groves, salt mines and a family lunch

Ouirgane

Hire a local mountain guide through your guesthouse (~250-350 MAD for a half or full day) and hike through olive groves and terraced Berber hamlets above Ouirgane. Routes typically loop past the old salt mines and small olive presses — ask your guide to time the walk so you stop at a family home for lunch (expect ~80-120 MAD for a home-cooked meal, arranged via the guide). Afternoon back at the gîte, or continue up to a viewpoint over the Ouirgane reservoir. Wear proper boots — this is rough, loose terrain.

🚌On foot

🛏Berber guesthouse / gîte in Ouirgane (~£15-20)

  • →Guided High Atlas day hike (direct booking, ~£25)
  • →Ancient salt mines visit
  • →Traditional olive oil pressing
  • →Lunch with a Berber family (~£8-10)

Day 4

Over the Tizi'n'Test pass to Tafraoute

Tafraoute

Long travel day. Take a shared grand taxi or bus back to Marrakech or Taroudant, then onwards to Tafraoute in the Anti-Atlas — the most reliable approach is a shared grand taxi Marrakech → Taroudant (~3h, ~100 MAD) and Taroudant → Tafraoute (~3-4h, ~80-100 MAD), or a direct CTM/Supratours coach from Marrakech where available (check times the day before). The route crosses the spectacular Tizi'n'Test pass; ask your driver to stop at the 12th-century Tin Mal Mosque on the way — entry is free, though you'll want a small tip for the local caretaker. Arrive Tafraoute for a late dinner.

🚌Shared grand taxis via Taroudant (~£18-20 total)

🛏Small family-run hotel or guesthouse in Tafraoute (~£15-20)

  • →Tizi'n'Test mountain pass drive
  • →Tin Mal Mosque (free, 12th century)
~£45
Day 5

Cycling the painted blue rocks of Tafraoute

Tafraoute

Hire a mountain bike from one of the small shops in central Tafraoute (~150-200 MAD per day / £12-16); ask your guesthouse to point you to the best-value one. The classic ride heads out through the Ameln Valley, past the famous blue-painted boulders (painted by Belgian artist Jean Vérame in 1984) and the 'Napoleon's Hat' rock formation, with almond groves and pink granite cliffs all around. Around 20-30km if you do a full loop — it's hilly and hot, so start early and carry plenty of water. Afternoon free to rest and eat in town.

🚌Bicycle

🛏Family-run hotel or guesthouse in Tafraoute (~£15-20)

  • →Mountain bike hire and Ameln Valley loop (~£14)
  • →Blue rocks and Napoleon's Hat
  • →Tafraoute town market
~£35
Day 6

Tafraoute → Sidi Kaouki beach camp

Sidi Kaouki

Another big travel day. Shared taxis/buses Tafraoute → Agadir (~3-4h, ~£10) and Agadir → Essaouira (~3h, ~£8), then a petit taxi or local bus the 25km south to Sidi Kaouki (~£5). Sidi Kaouki is a laid-back fishing village with a long windswept Atlantic beach. Book a beach camp or surf-camp tent directly (several family-run camps line the beach, from ~£12-18 per person in a shared tent). Walk the coastal dunes south of the village in the late afternoon, swim if the swell allows, and settle in for a beachside fish dinner by the fire.

🚌Shared taxi/bus Tafraoute → Agadir → Essaouira + local taxi (~£23)

🛏Beach camp / surf camp tent, shared, Sidi Kaouki (~£15)

  • →Coastal dune walk
  • →Beach camp by the Atlantic
  • →Fresh grilled fish dinner
~£55
Day 7

Coastal walk to Essaouira

Essaouira

Walk north along the beach from Sidi Kaouki towards Essaouira (roughly 25km — either do the full coast path with an early start, or take a local taxi for part of it). A local guide can be arranged in Sidi Kaouki for ~£15-20 if you want company and route knowledge. Arrive in Essaouira, check into a medina riad or hostel, then spend the afternoon in the walled old town: the Skala de la Ville ramparts, the fishing port, and the bustling souks. Surf lessons can be booked on the beach for ~700-900 MAD (~£55-70) for a half-day if you want to get in the water.

🚌On foot or short local taxi (~£5)

🛏Medina riad or hostel, Essaouira (~£18-25)

  • →Beach walk Sidi Kaouki → Essaouira
  • →Essaouira ramparts and fishing port
  • →Optional surf lesson (~£60 direct)
~£50
Day 8

Essaouira morning → Marrakech

Marrakech

Free morning in Essaouira — coffee on the square, a last wander through the woodwork and thuya shops, or a walk on the beach. In the afternoon take the CTM or Supratours coach back to Marrakech (~2.5-3h, ~70-100 MAD / £6-9) or a shared grand taxi. Back in Marrakech for a final evening: return to the Djemaa el-Fna, eat at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the square, and pick up last souvenirs in the souks.

🚌CTM/Supratours coach Essaouira → Marrakech (~£8)

🛏Medina riad or hostel, Marrakech (~£18-25)

  • →Essaouira souks and beach
  • →Souvenir shopping
  • →Final evening at Djemaa el-Fna
~£45
Day 9

Depart Marrakech

Marrakech

Depart at any time. If you're flying out, take bus no. 19 or a petit taxi to the airport (~£4-8). If you're heading to Casablanca for a flight, take the train from Marrakech station — buy your ticket the day before, ~200 MAD first class to Casablanca Mohammed V Airport (~4h40).

Frequently asked questions

How much does Morocco Active Adventure — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £395 per person for 9 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,099 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £395 — a saving of roughly £704 (64%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, culture trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
