A 5-day self-launched version of G Adventures' Marrakech–Ouarzazate–Zagora–Mhamid Sahara loop. Instead of a private minivan and group CEO, you'll use Morocco's excellent CTM/Supratours coaches and shared 4x4s/transfers booked locally, staying in riads, guesthouses and Berber desert camps at backpacker prices. Same dunes, same sunrises, same camel trek — but at roughly a third of the price. Best done Oct–Apr; summer desert heat is brutal. Costs are approximate backpacker estimates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Marrakech → Ouarzazate over the Tizi n'Tichka

Marrakech / Ouarzazate

Start early in Marrakech and walk or take a petit taxi (£1-2) to the CTM or Supratours coach station. The morning coach to Ouarzazate (roughly 4-5 hrs, ~£8-10) climbs the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass — sit on the right for the best valley views. Arrive early afternoon, check into a riad or guesthouse near the kasbah, then wander the Taourirt Kasbah and the Atlas Film Studios (entry ~£7), where Gladiator and Game of Thrones scenes were shot. Optional: a grand taxi out to Aït Benhaddou (30 min, ~£10 return shared) for sunset at the UNESCO ksar — worth it if you have daylight. Eat tagine in the main square and sleep early; tomorrow starts before dawn.

🚌CTM or Supratours coach Marrakech–Ouarzazate, ~£8-10; local petit taxis and shared grand taxi to Aït Benhaddou ~£10

Day 2

Ouarzazate → Zagora → Mhamid → Erg Lihoudi camp

Mhamid / Erg Lihoudi

Take the morning coach or shared grand taxi down the Draa Valley via Agdz (palm oases, kasbahs, Berber villages) to Zagora (roughly 3 hrs, ~£7-9), then a shared grand taxi on to Mhamid (1.5-2 hrs, ~£6-8). In Mhamid, arrange a 2-night desert package directly with a local agency or your guesthouse — most quote around £45-70 per person for two nights including camp, meals, camel trek and 4x4 transfers (book a day ahead by phone/WhatsApp or just turn up and haggle). Walk or ride a camel the last ~2 hrs to the Erg Lihoudi dunes, arriving for sunset. Mint tea over a fire, dinner at camp, and the best star field you'll see in North Africa.

🚌Coach/shared grand taxi Ouarzazate–Zagora ~£7-9; shared grand taxi Zagora–Mhamid ~£6-8; camel/walking into dunes included in camp package

Day 3

Erg Lihoudi → Bertam Oasis

Bertam Oasis / Chegaga sands

Wake for sunrise on the dunes, breakfast at camp, then the second day of the desert journey. Walk or ride a camel to a lunch stop in the sand (your camp operator will organise this as part of the package), then switch to a 4x4 to cross to the Bertam oasis area near the Chegaga dunes — the biggest sand sea in Morocco. Arrive in time for sunset, dinner fireside with stories and drumming. Bring a headtorch, warm layers (desert nights are cold Nov–Mar) and enough water. No showers today either — embrace the dust.

🚌Camel/walking plus 4x4 transfer, included in desert package (~£45-70 covers Days 2-3)

Sunrise, breakfast and a 4x4 run back to Mhamid, then shared grand taxi to Zagora. Use the free time to shower at a cheap hotel or hammam (~£3-5), grab a proper lunch and post up by a pool if you can. Mid-afternoon, take a shared grand taxi or coach back up the Draa Valley to Skoura (roughly 3 hrs, ~£7-9) — this is palm-oasis country, with the mud-brick Amerhidil Kasbah among 100,000 date palms. Check into a family-run guesthouse, then eat dinner together in the village. Optional small-group cooking class or kasbah walk arranged through your guesthouse (~£10-15).

You'll roll into Marrakech early-mid afternoon — enough time to drop bags, hit the Jemaa el-Fna food stalls for the evening and, if you're flying out, take the airport bus (line 19, ~£3) or a taxi (~£8-10). Don't book a flight before about 4pm.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Moroccan Sahara Discovery — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £225 per person for 5 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £340 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £225 — a saving of roughly £115 (34%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, budget trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
