A self-launched version of the classic 3-day Marrakech–Dades–Merzouga–Fes desert run. Instead of a private guided vehicle, you use Morocco's excellent shared grand-taxi and CTM/Supratours bus network plus a locally booked desert camp package (camel trek + night in Erg Chebbi) — the same route, the same views, a fraction of the price. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget-traveller estimates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Marrakech over the High Atlas to Dades Valley

Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley

Start early from Jemaa el-Fna and take a shared grand taxi or CTM/Supratours bus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate (~£8-10, 4-5 hrs over the Tizi n'Tichka pass — sit on the left for the best views). From Ouarzazate grab a shared grand taxi to Ait Ben Haddou (~£2-3, 30 min) to walk the UNESCO ksar and kasbahs on your own — entry to the ksar is free, small kasbah museums ~£1-2. Continue by shared taxi to Boumalne Dades or Kelaat M'Gouna (~£4-6, 1.5-2 hrs), then a short taxi or local pickup into the Dades Valley. Book a guesthouse in the valley in advance and ask them to arrange the last leg. Sunset over the Dades rock formations is free and spectacular.

🛏Valley guesthouse / budget kasbah hotel in Boumalne Dades (~£12-18/night)

  • →Tizi n'Tichka pass viewpoints
  • →Ait Ben Haddou UNESCO ksar (self-guided walk)

Day 2

Todra Gorge walk, then Merzouga desert camp

Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)

Take a shared grand taxi from Boumalne to Tinghir (~£2-3, 45 min), then a local taxi or shared ride to Todra Gorge (~£2). Walk the river path between the canyon walls yourself — it's free and easily followed, and the 1.5-2 hr route up to the nomad cafés and back is the classic low-intensity option. Head to Tinghir for a shared grand taxi to Rissani (~£4-5, 1.5 hrs) and on to Merzouga (~£2-3). Pre-book a Merzouga desert camp package directly (small camps run ~£30-45 per person including 4x4/camel transfer in, camel trek at sunset, Berber dinner, drumming and breakfast — check GetYourGuide, Klook or book direct with the camp by WhatsApp). Camel trek at sunset into Erg Chebbi, dinner and a night under the stars.

Day 3

Sunrise over the dunes and on to Fes

Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Ifrane → Fes

Wake for sunrise over the dunes (free, and worth the alarm), breakfast at camp and 4x4/camel back to Merzouga village. Take a shared grand taxi to Rissani or Erfoud (~£2-3), then a CTM or Supratours bus to Fes via the Ziz Valley, Midelt, the Middle Atlas cedar forests and Ifrane (~£9-12, 7-8 hrs — book the CTM the day before or online; there is usually an early-afternoon departure). Break the ride informally at the Ifrane/cedar forest stops if you're on a service that pauses, otherwise enjoy the views. Arrive Fes in the evening and check into a medina riad or hostel.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Marrakech to Fes Sahara Desert Route — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £127 per person for 3 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Morocco Excursions?+

Yes — Morocco Excursions charges around £145 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £127 — a saving of roughly £18 (12%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, budget trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
