Fes to Marrakech 3-Day Sahara Desert Trip — Self-Launched
3 days · Morocco
Desertbrise Travel charges £225
No-markup version: ~£159 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of Desertbrise Travel's 3-day Fes–Merzouga–Marrakech loop: over the Middle Atlas to the Erg Chebbi dunes, a camel trek and night in a Berber desert camp, then back through Todra Gorges, the Dades Valley and Ait Benhaddou to Marrakech. Instead of a private group 4x4, you piece it together using Morocco's excellent CTM/Supratours coaches and shared grand taxis, booking your own desert camp and local guides direct. Costs are approximate backpacker/mid-range estimates in GBP per person and assume shared twin/dorm or budget private rooms.
Day-by-day
Fes → Merzouga: Middle Atlas, cedar forests and camel trek into Erg Chebbi
Fes to Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)
Start early. Take the CTM or Supratours coach from Fes to Merzouga (usually departing around 07:00–08:00, ~7–8 hrs, roughly £12–15; book on ctm.ma or at the Fes bus station a day or two ahead). The route climbs through Ifrane's alpine-style chalets, the Azrou cedar forest (watch for wild Barbary macaques at the roadside viewpoints), the Ziz Gorges and the Tizi n'Talghamt pass — keep your camera ready on the left side. Arrive Merzouga mid-afternoon; your camp host will meet you at the village edge (most include 4x4 luggage transfer or you walk 10–15 mins to the dune line). Drop bags, then at around 17:00 join a camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes (~1.5 hrs with a local cameleer, £18–25 including sunset stop) to your desert camp. Dinner is served in the dunes — tagine, bread and mint tea — followed by drumming around the fire under one of the darkest skies in Morocco.
🚌CTM/Supratours coach Fes→Merzouga ~£12–15; 4x4 luggage transfer to camp often included or ~£5

Merzouga to Boumalne Dades
Wake for sunrise over the dunes, then camel or 4x4 back to Merzouga village for breakfast. Optional short stop at a local fossil workshop in Erfoud (free, commission-based — haggle hard or skip). Take the shared grand taxi or local bus from Rissani/Merzouga to Tinerhir (Todra) — grand taxis run when full, ~£8–12 per seat, ~2.5 hrs; alternatively arrange a shared minivan through your riad (~£15). In Tinerhir, walk into the Todra Gorges canyon (free, 30–45 min each way on foot from the village) — sheer 300m limestone walls, a river and rock climbers overhead. Continue by shared taxi or bus to Boumalne Dades (~£4–6, 1 hr). Check into a budget hotel with a Dades Valley view (e.g. Hotel La Gazelle du Dades equivalent, ~£20–28), eat dinner and catch live Berber music at your hotel if it's on.

At Ouarzazate you can hop off for 30 mins at the Atlas Film Studios (entry ~£6) and Kasbah Taourirt, or push on. Frequently asked questions
How much does Fes to Marrakech 3-Day Sahara Desert Trip — Self-Launched cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £159 per person for 3 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Desertbrise Travel?+
Yes — Desertbrise Travel charges around £225 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £159 — a saving of roughly £66 (29%) per person.
How long is the Morocco trip?+
This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Morocco.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, culture, budget trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
