Southern Europe Self-Launched: Dubrovnik to Corfu via Montenegro & Albania

8 days · Montenegro, Albania & Corfu

G Adventures charges £950

£522saved per person (55%)

No-markup version: ~£428 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched, hostel-based version of G Adventures' 8-day Roamies trip from Dubrovnik to Corfu. You'll hit the same highlights — the azure sweep of Kotor Bay, sunrise from Kotor Fortress, Lake Skadar, Tirana's Skanderbeg Square, the Albanian Riviera and a free day on Corfu — but travelling by public bus, local ferry and shared taxis, booking your own beds in the same standard of hostels, and joining self-bookable walking tours where the tour used a CEO. Costs are realistic budget-traveller estimates in GBP and assume a 4-person-ish pace of independent travel (you can join day tours to meet people). Flights in/out are not included. Original G Adventures price isn't displayed on the page (tour currently unsold for the season); a typical comparable Roamies 8-day Europe trip runs around £900-£1,100pp before flights, so we've used £950 as a reference point.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Dubrovnik — Old Town orientation

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Land at Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) and take the Platanus airport shuttle to Pile Gate (Old Town) or Gruz bus station — around €10 (£8.50). Check into a central Old Town or Gruz hostel (e.g. Old Town Hostel, Hostel Angelina or similar, £22-28 for a dorm). In the late afternoon self-guide the Old Town: walk the Stradun, peek into the Franciscan Monastery and cloister, see Dubrovnik Cathedral and Onofrio's Fountain. For Stradun and city walls context, join a pay-what-you-want walking tour (around £10-15 tip) or just buy the City Walls ticket (~£30) for tomorrow morning if you're keen. Evening: cheap konoba meal of black risotto or burek and a beer.

The showpiece scenic day. Take the morning bus from Dubrovnik bus station to Kotor (Croatia Bus / Keo, ~4 hrs including border, £18-25 one way; multiple departures daily, book a day ahead in summer). Ask the driver or arrange a short shared-taxi/taxi stop at Perast en route (Perast is 15 min before Kotor; alternatively hop off in Perast, drop bags at a café, then take a local bus or taxi the last stretch, ~£5). In Perast, walk the waterfront, see the baroque churches of St Nicholas, and optionally take a small boat out to Our Lady of the Rocks (~£5-8). Continue to Kotor, check into Old Town hostel (e.g. Old Town Hostel Kotor, £15-20 dorm). Back down by mid-morning, then the day is yours. Options: Kotor Maritime Museum (£5), the Cat Museum (£2), St Nicholas' Church, a boat trip to the Blue Cave (~£20-25 shared boat), sea kayaking in the bay (£20-25 with a local operator), or a lazy hostel afternoon. Kotor to Tirana via Sveti Stefan & Lake Skadar

Take a morning bus Kotor to Bar or Budva, then onward to Ulcinj/Shkoder and Tirana — or the simpler and cheaper option: a direct Kotor–Tirana coach (Old Town Travel / Albania transfers, ~5-6 hrs, £20-28). Ask for a photo stop overlooking Sveti Stefan on the Budva stretch (if on a direct bus, at least enjoy the coastal views). If you self-organise via Shkoder, break at Lake Skadar National Park (Virpazar) for a 2-hour boat trip among the island monasteries and birdlife (~£15-20 shared boat) — the same 'dolphin-shaped lake' stop as the group tour. Arrive Tirana evening, check into a central hostel (e.g. Hostel Trip'n Hostel or Milingona City Center, £12-16 dorm). Cheap dinner at a local byrek stand and tavë kosi.

It's the closest equivalent to the group's half-day guided walking tour. Afternoon: choose your own pace — Bunk'Art 2 (£5), the National History Museum (£2), New Bazaar food market for tasting lunch, or a trip up Dajti Ekspres cable car (£5) for mountain views and a short hike. Book anything popular ahead in high season.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Southern Europe Self-Launched: Dubrovnik to Corfu via Montenegro & Albania cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £428 per person for 8 days in Montenegro, Albania & Corfu. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £950 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £428 — a saving of roughly £522 (55%) per person.

How long is the Montenegro, Albania & Corfu trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Montenegro, Albania & Corfu.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, beaches trip through Montenegro, Albania & Corfu, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
