Follow the same incredible route as Intrepid's Real Mexico tour — from the sprawling streets of Mexico City to the Caribbean coast of Playa del Carmen — entirely on your own terms. This self-launched version takes you through Oaxaca's colonial markets, San Cristobal's highland cobblestones, jungle-clad Palenque ruins, colourful Campeche, the cenotes of Valladolid and the wonder of Chichen Itza. You'll travel by public ADO buses (Mexico's excellent long-distance coach network), stay in quality budget hotels and hostels, and book activities directly or via GetYourGuide — saving a huge chunk versus the group tour price. Arrival in Mexico City

Touch down in one of the world's great megacities. From the airport, take the Metro Line 5 to the city centre (around £0.30) or a pre-booked TAPO airport taxi (~£8). Get settled into your hostel in the historic Centro Histórico or Condesa neighbourhood. Spend the afternoon exploring freely — wander to the Zócalo (main square), peek into the National Palace courtyard to see Diego Rivera's murals for free, or hop on a colourfully painted trajinera boat through the canal district of Xochimilco (~MXN1,000/boat/hr, shareable). Head out tonight for street tacos — try ordering in Spanish for full local experience.

Grab chilaquiles for breakfast at a local market — a true Mexico City morning. Self-guide a walk around the historic centre: the Templo Mayor ruins, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the murals of the Palacio Nacional are all free or very cheap. For lunch, do your own taco crawl along Calle López or in the Mercado de San Juan — budget around £5–8 for a proper feed. In the afternoon, visit the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacán (book online at museofridakahlo.org.mx at least a month ahead — ~MXN320/£14) or the National Museum of Anthropology (~MXN210/£9), one of the world's great museums. End the day with tostadas and a mezcal in the Roma Norte neighbourhood.

Take an ADO first-class bus from TAPO (Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente) or the Southern Terminal to Oaxaca. The journey is approximately 6–7 hours and costs around MXN500–700 (~£22–30). Arrive in the afternoon and self-guide a walk around the city — the Zócalo, the jade-green facade of the Cathedral of Oaxaca, and the pedestrian street Macedonio Alcalá are all free to explore. Browse the market stalls and pick up a tejate (a cold chocolate-maize drink). The streets are eminently walkable and safe by day.

A full free day to explore Oaxaca and its surroundings. The must-do is Monte Albán — take a colectivo or local bus from Mercado de Artesanías (~MXN50 return/£2) to the hilltop Zapotec city, which costs MXN210 (~£9) to enter. Spend a couple of hours exploring the pyramids, ball court and sweeping valley views. In the afternoon, consider a day-trip combo to Hierve el Agua (petrified waterfalls and mineral pools) and Teotitlán del Valle (famous weaving village) — book a shared colectivo tour (~MXN950/£40) or negotiate a shared taxi. Alternatively, the Mitla ruins are easily reached by colectivo from the second-class bus station (~£3 each way). Book via GetYourGuide or directly at the tourism office on the Zócalo.

San Cristobal de las Casas: Arrival & Markets

Arrive in the Chiapas highlands in the morning. Drop your bags at your hostel and grab breakfast — this is coffee country, so order a local brew. Self-guide a walk through the pastel-painted cobblestone streets of this UNESCO-recognised town. The main plaza and the Cathedral of San Cristobal are beautiful and free. Head to the Santo Domingo textile market in the afternoon — a vibrant open-air market full of indigenous Tzotzil weavers selling jewellery and clothing. End the day at a local bar trying pox, a traditional corn-based spirit. The Jade Museum (~MXN65/£3) is a quirky optional stop.

The highlight is a boat trip through Sumidero Canyon — arrange a shared colectivo from the market area or book via a local agency (~MXN900/£38 including transport and entrance). The canyon walls rise up to 1,000m and you may spot crocodiles, spider monkeys and abundant birdlife. Alternatively, rent a mountain bike (~MXN400/hr) from a local shop near the plaza and cycle to the indigenous villages of San Juan Chamula or Zinacantan — an extraordinary window into living Maya culture. The villages charge a small entry fee (~MXN50).

Arrive by early afternoon and check into your hostel, which will likely be within walking distance of the town square. Palenque town itself is a functional base — the magic is in the surrounding jungle. Spend the afternoon relaxing or walk to the nearby Roberto Barrios waterfalls (accessible by local colectivo, ~MXN50). In the evening, practice a few Spanish phrases — download Duolingo or pick up a phrasebook.

Palenque Ruins & Misol-Ha Waterfall

Campeche is a UNESCO World Heritage walled city and one of Mexico's most photogenic — its streets are lined with candy-coloured colonial buildings. Self-guide a walk along the old city walls and the malecón (seafront promenade) — entirely free. Head to Portales de San Martín for dinner: this covered arcade is lined with local restaurants serving fresh seafood, including the local specialty of pan de cazón (layered tortillas with shark and black bean). The central market is also great for cheap eats.

Campeche to Valladolid via Becal

Take an ADO bus towards Mérida, then change for Valladolid (~4–5 hours total, ~MXN400–550/£17–24). En route, ask your bus to stop in Becal, the famous 'Hat Town' of the Yucatán — or arrange a brief stop via a shared taxi. This small town is famous for its handwoven jipi hats (Panama-style) made from palm fibres in underground caves to keep the fibres pliable. Many homes have small workshops you can visit — just knock on a door with a hat sign. Arrive in Valladolid by afternoon and visit the Mercado Municipal for fresh fruit, snacks and local handicrafts. The central Parque Principal and the Iglesia de San Servacio are beautiful and free.

Then head to one of the nearby cenotes: Cenote Xkeken and Samula are a short tuk-tuk ride away (~MXN40 each way) and offer incredible underground swimming with stalactites and electric-blue water (~MXN120–180 entrance each). Cenote Suytun is Instagram-famous for its rock platform — get there early to beat the crowds. Alternatively, Cenote Yokdzonot (run by a Maya women's cooperative) is a tranquil, community-owned option. Return to town for a sunset stroll and local dinner.

Entrance is MXN641 (~£28) and includes a sound-and-light show ticket. Explore El Castillo pyramid, the Great Ball Court, the Caracol observatory and the Temple of Warriors at your own pace — allow 2–3 hours. Grab lunch in the nearby village of Pisté (~£5–7 for a local comida). Then stop at Cenote Yokdzonot (en route, ~MXN120/£5) for a refreshing swim run by a local Maya women's cooperative. Take a colectivo or ADO bus onward to Playa del Carmen (~2.5 hours, ~MXN200/£9). Arrive in the evening, stroll La Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) pedestrian strip and feast on seafood with a margarita.

Playa del Carmen: Beaches, Snorkelling & Farewell

Your final day — and your adventure doesn't have to stop here! Playa del Carmen sits on the Caribbean coast with powdery white sands and turquoise water. Spend the morning on the beach (free public beach access along Playa Mamitas or further south past the ferry pier). For something active, book a snorkelling trip to the coral reefs off Cozumel or in the nearby cenote caverns — available via GetYourGuide or at kiosks on 5th Avenue (~MXN800–1,200/£35–52). The island of Cozumel is a 30-minute ferry ride away (~MXN250 return/£11) and is world-class for diving and snorkelling.
